Chapter 2

Author: cheese
Luca Ferraro, Dante's assistant, hurried after me and asked if I wanted him to get Dante.

"No." I wheeled myself away, afraid that if I watched them any longer, I'd go inside and beg Dante to come home with me.

That night, I called Mara and asked her to check with the rehab center for me again. Then I sat in the bedroom and waited for Dante.

He came home well after midnight and crouched down to tuck the blanket around me. "Hurting again?"

He could still be so gentle with me.

I grabbed his hand, and the tears came all at once.

"I saw you kiss Isabella. Dante, you know what she did to me."

He stiffened and pulled his hand free. "That was years ago. She's been getting threatening letters lately. Her father asked me to keep an eye on her."

"Does looking out for her mean kissing her?"

"Erin, don't make it sound so ugly."

"So you can kiss her, but I'm not allowed to talk about it?"

He shot to his feet and tossed his jacket onto the couch. "Every time I come home, it's the same thing. Are you hurting? Have you taken your meds? And God forbid I'm a little late, because you'll be waiting to interrogate me. I'm tired too, Erin!"

My first instinct was to apologize. The words were right there, but I swallowed them.

"Dante, you used to hate seeing me hurt. How could you do this to me? And with Isabella, of all people?"

He didn't answer. He turned and walked off to his study.

I lay awake all night, crying until my pillow was soaked.

I still had a hospital appointment the next day. The rehabilitation specialist I'd booked well in advance was only in Boston for the day. I needed him to assess my injuries so I could take his report to Switzerland.

The next morning, Dante came to collect my medical records. "Come on. I'll go with you."

I didn't bring up last night's fight. I just tucked some old performance photos into the folder.

I cared more about finding out whether I could ever dance again with prosthetic legs than getting an apology from Dante.

The rear door of the armored van had just opened for the wheelchair lift when Isabella called.

She said a strange car had been parked outside her apartment for a long time.

Dante immediately ordered Luca to drive over and pick her up. I grabbed Dante's hand. "My appointment's at ten. You promised you'd come with me."

"She could be in danger. I'll get you another car."

"Can't you at least wait until my ride gets here? I can't get into another car on my own."

He looked down at my hand holding his. "Are you trying to remind me again that you lost your legs for me?"

"I'm talking about the car."

"I'll handle it. Stop trying to guilt me into staying, Erin. I'm exhausted."

Tired. Again.

I let go of his hand.

He climbed into the van and left without arranging another ride for me.

My caregiver managed to arrange a ride through the hospital, but I arrived 40 minutes late. I completed the tests, only to find that the specialist had already left.

I took out one of my old performance photos and asked a nurse to pass it along with my test results. My hand trembled, and the photo slipped to the floor.

Someone picked it up, glanced at it, then looked at me in my wheelchair.

"Is this you?"

I nodded and placed the photo facedown on my lap, unable to bring myself to look at it again.

Luca came to pick me up. He told me the suspicious car outside Isabella's apartment belonged to a repairman. Even so, Dante had insisted on bringing her back to the estate.

When I entered the living room, Dante was crouching beside the couch, holding Isabella's ankle as he urged the family doctor to examine it more closely.

"My new shoes rubbed a little, that's all." She laughed and drew her foot back. "I'm dancing Giselle next week. A Band-Aid will do."

"You're a dancer. We can't take chances with your feet." Dante wouldn't let her put her foot down.

There was a small red spot on her heel. The skin wasn't even broken. All I'd done was ask him to wait for one car, and he'd made it sound like I was calling in a debt.

He finally noticed me. "How'd the checkup go?"

"I didn't get to see the doctor. I was late."

"I'll book you another one." He started to get up, but the second Isabella's foot moved, he caught it again. "Keep it off the floor."

I couldn't stop myself. "What, are you going to carry her up the stairs too?"

Isabella looked at me. "You've danced this role too. You know better than anyone how much your feet matter. Once the show's over, I'll be fine. Please don't be mad."

"Do you really have to rub it in?"

"I was the one who sent the van to get her. Don't take your anger out on Isabella," Dante cut in.

I clutched my medical file. "Then look at me. I just want to stand up again. I'm not trying to torture you. Dante, do I have to beg you for that too?"

He fell silent for a moment before moving behind my wheelchair, offering to take me back to my room.

I gripped the wheels to stop him from pushing me and asked my caregiver to take me instead.

But Walter, the butler, stopped me by the elevator. "Ms. Walsh, we're converting your dance studio into a guest room. There are some things we need you to sort through. Would you like to keep them or have them thrown out?"

Three days after the show, I got my first official invitation.Adam and I talked it over. We'd start with two cities, and if my body could handle it, we'd add more. When I sent the confirmation email, I stared at my own name and suddenly started laughing.Mara asked what was so funny."This time I'm packing my bags for a show."Over the next year, two cities turned into six. Adam and I took Encore to one new stage after another. When I'd been walking for too long, I still needed my wheelchair. When the pain got bad, I took time off. When I couldn't do a move the old way, Adam and I changed it together. And when I needed to stop, I finally had the nerve to say, "Not today. I need a break."When Encore came back to Zurich, the theater hung my poster over the main entrance. A week before opening, the ticket page lit up with SOLD OUT. Mara took a screenshot and sent it to me, then called right after. The two of us laughed on the phone for a long time.Dante never came backstage again.Isab

On opening night, I checked the joints of my prosthetics backstage over and over. When Mara handed me a cup of water, I realized I'd been biting my lip so hard it hurt.Out front, the announcer was calling out the title of the piece. The door to the stage was right in front of me, but I couldn't bring myself to move.Adam came over. "The floor's fine. I checked it myself. Just dance it the way you did yesterday."I handed the cup back to Mara. Through the wings, all I could see were strangers' faces. They were holding programs with my name on them, waiting for me to come out.I took a deep breath and walked, one step at a time, to the spot where I'd stood in rehearsal. The house lights went down. The music began.I sat down, pressed my palms to the floor, and turned with the music. In the first few rehearsals, I'd always had to rest at this point. Tonight, I pushed myself up and caught the next beat.Another dancer continued the movement from the other side. I used his hand for support

A week before opening night, the crew was rearranging the sets, so we wrapped rehearsal early.Mara and I left through the side door, weaving past the crew as they hauled props. Dante was waiting outside the gate. The moment he spotted me, he hurried over."Just one minute."He was holding the old box with my performance recordings in it. After the accident, I'd refused to watch them, so they'd stayed at the estate."All the original footage is in here. Even your first solo."I took the box. My fingers brushed the dates I'd written on it back then."Thank you."He was about to say something when someone behind him yelled, "Move!"A cart loaded with set frames came rolling down the loading ramp. A worker ran after it but couldn't catch up.The cart slammed into the edge of the doorway, sending one of the frames toppling over.I heard it, but I froze. As the frame tipped toward me, I glanced down at my legs without thinking and forgot to get out of the way.Dante lunged toward me and pus

I pushed the door open. Isabella was sitting among several guests, with her revised run of show spread out on the table."There you are." She got up and reached for my arm. "We were just talking about you."I stepped out of her reach and put the email on the table."When did I agree to any of this?"When she saw the paper, her smile froze."Erin, let's talk outside.""Why? You were already telling them all about it."A woman holding a program looked up. "So this hasn't been finalized?""Not even close." I looked at her. "Encore is going on exactly as planned. Dante and I broke up three years ago. We won't be attending anything together."The woman set her program back on the table. Isabella rushed to say it was all a miscommunication. She went to gather up the papers, but I pressed my hand down on them."You wrote this. So explain."She glanced at the guests and lowered her voice. "Dante wanted to sponsor the show, and his advisor reached out to my father. I'm just representing my fami

"Dante, move. People need this space to rehearse."Dante didn't move. It had been more than three years since I'd last seen him. He'd lost weight, and he'd crumpled the program in his hand."I'm sorry, Erin."When I first got to Switzerland and the pain kept me up at night, I used to wonder whether I'd cave again if he ever really apologized. Now that I'd heard it, I just picked up my bag. He reached out and caught the strap."Then can you at least hear me out?"I glanced at his hand. He slowly let go and used the chair beside him to push himself up."I restored the studio exactly as it was. The original floor, the mirrors, everything. Even the photos are back on the walls. No one's allowed to touch them.""Didn't you already mail me the photos?"He hesitated."I kept copies. I had another set printed."I nodded. "Then those are yours.""Erin." His voice turned urgent. "That's not what I meant. The room's been waiting for you to come back. So have I. For three years, every single day,

Erin's POV:On my second day in Switzerland, I handed my complete medical records to the doctor. He examined my old injuries below the knee and the prosthetics I'd brought with me, asked why I'd stopped training, and then asked what I wanted to achieve most."To dance."The moment I said it, my eyes stung. He didn't promise anything right away. My old injuries needed treatment, and my prosthetics had to be refitted. How far I could go would depend on the training ahead.I took notes, asked questions whenever I didn't understand something, and asked him to slow down whenever I couldn't write fast enough.Dante sent my performance photos through Mara. He also wanted to send some of his people to look after me."I'll keep the photos. I don't need his people or his money."Then I braced myself against the edge of the bed and resumed practicing transfers with my caregiver. My arms couldn't support my weight properly, and the pain when I sat back down left me drenched in sweat.I rested with
