The elevator only went to one floor. His.

  Penthouse.

Caelum Vane didn't hold my hand. He held my wrist. Like I might run.

His driver opened the car door and wouldn't look at me. Like he was scared to look at his boss's new wife.

"Caelum, this is too fast," I whispered as the elevator doors closed. My ring felt heavy. "My family -"

"Your father got $8 million cleared ten minutes ago. He is at home drinking. He is safe because you said yes." He looked down at me, his jaw tight. "Don't worry about them. Worry about me now."

The elevator opened into his home.

God. It wasn't a home. It was a kingdom. Black marble, glass walls overlooking the whole city, lights like stars below us. It was cold. Perfect. Like him.

A woman in a black dress appeared. Old, stern.

"This is Irena. My housekeeper. She will show you your closet." Caelum finally let go of my wrist.

  "My closet?"

"Our closet, principessa. But your side is waiting."

Irena led me down a hall. I glanced back. Caelum was watching me, hands in pockets, eyes dark.

The bedroom was bigger than my entire apartment. One huge bed in the middle, black sheets. And a wall of glass.

But the closet - I gasped. It was full. Dresses, heels, bags, all in my size. All new, tags still on. Designer.

"Mr. Vane ordered for two weeks," Irena said. "He knows your size."

My face burned. How did he know my size?

When I turned, Caelum was in the doorway. Irena disappeared.

  "You like it?" he asked.

"You bought all this without asking me?"

"I don't ask, Elira. I provide." He walked in, slowly. He took off his watch, placed it on the dresser. "Take off your blouse."

  My heart stopped. "What?"

"You are wearing cheap polyester. You are Mrs. Vane now. You don't wear that." His voice was low, commanding. "Take it off. Put on something in the closet."

"I can change later. When you leave."

"I am not leaving." He sat on the edge of the bed, legs spread, eyes locked on me. "This is my bedroom. My house. My wife. I stay."

I clutched my blouse. "You said contract. One year. No feelings."

"And you will sleep here. Every night. Next to me. That is clause one." He leaned forward, elbows on knees. "Clause two - you don't hide from me. I want to see what I paid eight million for."

I was shaking again. But not just fear. Anger made me brave.

  "You didn't buy me!"

"Didn't I?" He stood, and in two steps he was in front of me. He grabbed the hem of my blouse, his knuckles brushing my stomach. The touch sent electricity through me. "This debt, this ring, this closet - you are mine, Elira. Say it."

I bit my lip hard so I wouldn't make a sound.

He noticed. His eyes dropped to my mouth.

"You keep biting that lip, and I will bite it for you." He whispered, his breath hot on my ear. He was so close I could feel his chest against mine. "Take. It. Off."

Slowly, with trembling fingers, I unbuttoned my blouse. One button. Two. Three.

His eyes never left me. They turned darker with each inch of skin.

When the blouse fell to the floor, I stood in my plain white bra, breathing fast.

He inhaled sharply. His jaw clenched.

"Christ." He muttered in Italian. "Sei perfetta."

His hand came up, but he didn't grab. He traced the strap of my bra, feather-light. I shivered.

"So innocent," he murmured. "Have you ever had a man touch you here, Elira?"

I shook my head, too embarrassed to speak.

"Good." His hand slid to my back, pulling me closer until my chest almost touched his shirt. "Because from now on, only I touch you here. Only I kiss you here. Understand?"

  "Yes," I whispered.

  "Yes what?"

  "Yes... Caelum."

He groaned, like my saying his name did something to him.

Then he let me go abruptly, stepping back. I gasped at the cold.

"Put on the red dress. The silk one. We have dinner with my business partners in one hour. They need to meet my wife."

He walked to the door, then stopped.

  "And Elira?"

I looked up, clutching my arms over myself.

"If you ever try to run from this marriage, I will lock every door in this city until I find you. And when I find you, I won't be gentle."

  He left.

I stood alone in his giant closet, wearing his ring, his eyes still burning on my skin.

I put on the red dress. It hugged every curve, slit up to my thigh. When I looked in the mirror, I didn't see poor intern Elira anymore.

I saw Mrs. Vane. The devil's bride.

And for the first time, I wasn't sure I wanted to escape.

  • I’M MARRIED TO THE DEVIL IN A SUIT   CHAPTER 10: HER MOTHER

My mother didn't knock like my father. She texted: _I'm outside. Please. Just 5 minutes, baby. I miss you._ I should have said no. Caelum told me to say no. He had already blacklisted my father. But it was my mother. The one who used to braid my hair. The one who cried when I signed the contract. I went down without telling him. She stood in the lobby, thin coat, hands shaking. She looked older than 45. "Elira," she whispered, hugging me. She smelled like home. Like cheap vanilla and laundry. "Look at you. You are glowing. He takes care of you, right?" "He does," I said. "Good. Good." She held my hands, tears in her eyes. "Baby, I didn't come to ask for money like your father. I swear. I came to beg you... stay." I froze. "What?" "Stay married. Stay with him. Don't leave, even after the one year is over." She squeezed my hands hard. "Elira, we need him. Your father's debts - if you leave Caelum, we lose the house. We lose everything. The collectors said if you st

  • I’M MARRIED TO THE DEVIL IN A SUIT   CHAPTER 9: HER FAMILY BETRAYS

I woke up in the library. Fairy lights still on, blanket over us, Caelum's arm heavy around my waist, my head on his chest. We had fallen asleep on the rug by the fireplace. For a second, I thought it was a dream. The library, the date, the bridge kiss. Then he whispered, sleepy, "Morning, my writer." It was real. He sat up, hair messy, shirt wrinkled. He never looked wrinkled. For me, he did. "Did you sleep well, Mrs. Vane? In your kingdom?" he asked, kissing my temple. "Better than in your cold black bed," I teased. He pretended to be offended and tickled me until I was laughing and begging. "My cold black bed is offended now. We need to go apologize to it." We were still laughing when Irena knocked. "Sir. Madam. There is a man downstairs. He says he is Madam's father. He is... loud." My blood went cold. Caelum felt it instantly. His hand tightened on my waist. "What's his name?" Caelum asked Irena, voice already turning to ice. "Mr. Evans." My father

We came home from our first date at midnight. I thought Caelum would carry me to bed again. He didn't. He held my hand and led me past the bedroom, down a hallway I had never been to. There was a black door. Locked. "What is in there?" I asked. "Something I built for you while you were getting ready. Irena helped." He opened the door. I gasped and my hands flew to my mouth. It was a library. Not a small one. A dream one. Floor to ceiling bookshelves, dark wood, a ladder that slid. A big window overlooking the city, a velvet reading chair, a fireplace, fairy lights. And a desk. On the desk, a brand new laptop, notebooks, pens. Everywhere. And books. Hundreds of books. Romance, classics, writing guides. All new. "Caelum..." My voice broke. "You told me in bed yesterday that you wanted to be a writer before your father's debt crushed your dream," he said, hands in pockets, suddenly nervous. Like a billionaire mafia devil could be nervous. "So I called my people. T

"Black dress. No slit," he had said. So I wore the black dress with no slit. It was elegant, off-shoulder, tight to my knees. Simple. Classy. I felt beautiful. Caelum was waiting downstairs. He wore all black again, but tonight he looked softer. No gun visible. Hair slightly messy, like he had run his hands through it nervous. He stared at me and forgot to speak. "Elira," he finally said. "You... you look like a wife." "A wife?" "My wife." He walked to me, took my hand, kissed my ring finger slowly, eyes on mine. "My beautiful wife. No man will survive tonight if they look at you." He led me to his car himself. No driver. "I want to drive my wife myself. Just us." The restaurant was not his building. It was a small Italian place on the water, lights, violins, private table with roses. "How did you find this?" I asked, smiling. "I asked Irena what girls like. She said normal girls like dates, not penthouses and threats." He looked almost embarrassed. The mafia dev

I woke up tangled. Not in sheets. In him. Caelum's arms were locked around me, my head on his chest, his heartbeat slow under my ear. His white shirt I wore had ridden up, and his hand rested possessively on my bare waist, holding me there like even in sleep he was scared I would disappear. For the first time since the contract, I didn't want to run. I traced the tattoo on his chest with my finger - a small black crown right over his heart. I had never noticed it before. His voice, sleepy and rough, made me jump. "If you keep touching me like that, principessa, we won't leave this bed today." "You're awake," I whispered. "I've been awake for an hour. Watching you." He opened his ice-blue eyes, soft, not cold for once. "You talk in your sleep." My face burned. "What did I say?" "You said my name." He smiled, slow and dangerous. "Three times." I hid my face in his chest. He laughed, chest vibrating, and pulled me closer. "Elira," he said, softer. "Look at me."

  • I’M MARRIED TO THE DEVIL IN A SUIT   CHAPTER 5: The Punishment

I made my first mistake as Mrs. Vane at breakfast. I smiled at the delivery boy. He was just a boy from the bakery, maybe 19, holding croissants. He said, "Morning, ma'am, you have a beautiful smile." I said, "Thank you." That was it. Two words. But Caelum heard it from the kitchen doorway. I felt the air change. He was in a grey suit, coffee in hand, but his knuckles went white around the cup. His eyes locked on the boy, then on me. "Leave," he told the boy, voice low. The boy ran. Then he looked at me. I was in one of his white shirts, bare legs, hair messy from sleeping in his arms. I thought I looked innocent. He thought I looked like I belonged to someone else. "Elira. Come here." I stood, nervous. "Caelum, he was just -" "I said come here." I walked to him. He set his coffee down slowly. Too slowly. "You remember clause 3 of our contract?" He asked, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. His touch was gentle but his eyes were storm. "What clause?
