Chapter 4

Penulis: Blanc Ball
The lively room fell silent at once. Every eye turned to me.

"Emmett, what proof do you have that the creep who hid in the girls' restroom filming people back then was Silas and not you?"

"Exactly! If you don't have hard evidence, stop shouting nonsense. I sure don't believe you took the fall for your brother."

My classmates clamored for me to show them proof. I turned to look at Corinne.

"Corinne can prove it," I said. "Because back then, she's the one who came down to the police station and bailed Silas and me out."

Back then, when Silas was caught filming a girl in the restroom, she called the police right away.

But before the police arrived, Silas shook off the girl who'd caught him and ran.

And because Silas and I looked exactly alike, the girl who'd called the police couldn't tell whether the boy she'd caught in the restroom was me or Silas.

So the police took both of us down to the station for questioning.

The police were good at their jobs. They quickly found the videos on Silas's phone.

Since Silas was already sixteen, and the police found a huge number of hidden-camera videos on his phone, the case was extremely serious. They were going to send him to juvenile detention for a year or two.

But then Corinne showed up and paid a large sum in bail to get Silas out.

Once he was out, Silas started playing the victim in front of me. He cried and said he had a police record now, and he didn't want our classmates looking down on him too. So he wanted me to take the blame for him.

Even Corinne said, "Emmett, just help Silas out. His health is already bad. If everyone at school finds out he did it and they freeze him out and bully him, won't that just make everything worse?"

She was worried about Silas being shunned and bullied. But if I took the blame, wouldn't I be shunned and bullied too?

Silas was a minor, so his police record would stay sealed. But I'd be branded for life.

Ten years had passed since then. I stared into Corinne's eyes, hoping she'd tell the truth.

If she still loved me even a little, she should tell the truth.

After all, I'd taken the blame for Silas for ten whole years...

When Corinne didn't answer, our classmates started pressing her. "Corinne, is Emmett telling the truth?"

Corinne smiled. She ignored the classmates pressing her and looked at me tenderly. "Emmett, I love you, but I can't lie and go against my conscience. You were obviously the one who filmed those girls in the restroom. Why are you trying to pin it on Silas?"

Her voice was gentle, but every word was a knife in my back.

The room exploded.

"Corinne is Emmett's wife! If even she won't take his side, then it was definitely Emmett who filmed those girls!"

"Emmett is so disgusting! Not only did he film girls in the bathroom, he's trying to frame his own brother for it!"

"That's it, I can't take this anymore! Emmett, you scumbag, you're an embarrassment to every man on the planet!"

With a furious curse, someone in the crowd hurled the glass in his hand straight at me.

Once one person started, everyone else followed. Wineglasses and plates came flying at me from every direction.

Glasses shattered, and red wine splashed across my face.

Plates hit me, and I was covered in food.

Even my face was cut by shards of broken glass. Everyone was against me, and they were all throwing things at me.

One furious girl even grabbed a bottle of wine and hurled it at me. "Die, you pervert!"

Her aim was perfect. The bottle struck me square in the forehead, and blood instantly poured from my head.

It ran down my forehead and dripped into my eyes. Through a haze of red, I saw Corinne frown in displeasure.

"Stop throwing things!" she snapped. "The flying glass cut Silas! Can't you see that?!"

When she saw the screenshots on my phone, Corinne turned white as a sheet. She stammered, "I... I... Emmett, don't be angry. I wasn't trying to hide it from you. I just forgot about it."Don't worry. I'll have my people take all these stories down right away. I'll clear your name."But I couldn't be bothered with her anymore. I called the police again. After that, Corinne actually left me alone for a while. I thought she'd finally given up on me. But later, Freya told me that Corinne hadn't given up at all. She'd gone back home to clean up after Silas.Because Silas had gotten himself into trouble again.Back when Corinne and I got engaged, I'd spent my life savings on a private residence for my parents at Silver Pines Senior Living, for them to retire in. But later, once I found out my parents had been lying to me all along and using me as Silas's scapegoat, I sold it.My parents didn't know I'd sold it, though. After I left the country, they happily showed up at Silver Pines,

After I'd rejected her again and again, Corinne finally broke down. She sobbed, "Emmett, how can you be so heartless? We've been together for over ten years. Can you really bring yourself to throw me away?"But I couldn't be bothered to keep going around in circles with this shameless woman. I called the police. The police took Corinne away, and my apartment was finally quiet again.I got out the first-aid kit, sat down, and carefully started treating Freya's injuries. In the fight, Corinne's nails had left two scratches on Freya's beautiful face."I'm really sorry for dragging you into this," I said, feeling terrible. But Freya smiled. Suddenly, she reached out and caught the hand holding the cotton swab. "Emmett, your problems are my problems."So don't ever be this polite with me again. It'll hurt my feelings."She paused, then added softly, "Emmett, the truth is, the way I feel about you hasn't changed since high school..."I was stunned. I'd always thought Freya only conf

Now that I'd called her out to her face, Corinne finally went quiet. She stared at me, pale as a ghost. Her mouth opened and closed as if she wanted to say something, but the evidence was undeniable, and she had nothing left to argue. For a long time, she couldn't get a word out."Corinne, I must've been blind to ever love you," I said coldly. "But my eyes are open now. I don't want to waste any more time on someone as revolting as you. Get out of my apartment right now, or I'm calling the police!""Emmett, don't do this," Corinne choked out. "We've been together for so many years. You know how much I love you!"But you're so straitlaced that sometimes I find you a little boring. And your brother is so wild and reckless. He looks just like you, but his personality is the complete opposite. So I lost my head for a moment and got a little interested in him."But it was only a passing thing. It wasn't love. The one I really love is you! You're the one I want to spend the rest of my li

I froze. I didn't even need to step into the living room to guess what was happening.Corinne was here.Honestly, when I left, it never once occurred to me that she'd come looking for me.Because whenever we fought, I was always the one who caved first. She'd never backed down for me, not once, while I'd apologized to her over and over, with no dignity left at all...That was why I hadn't bothered covering my tracks when I left.I'd assumed someone as proud as Corinne would never come all this way herself to beg me to take her back. But she'd found me. Not only had she found me, she was in the living room locked in a full-on brawl with Freya. They were yanking each other's hair, each one more vicious than the other."Freya, you homewrecker! Seducing someone else's husband—you have no shame!" Corinne screamed. "I knew it! Emmett would never just walk out on me on his own. It was you, you bitch, coming between us!""You're the one with no shame, Corinne!" Freya shot back, refusin

After she said that, Freya hugged me.And after that, we didn't see each other again for years. Two years later, I got into Westbridge University's math program, but my parents forced me to give my spot to Silas.Silas partied his way through four years at Westbridge, failed every single class, and got expelled. My degree was ruined for good. That same year—the year Westbridge expelled Silas under my name—Freya suddenly sent me an email. She said she was studying math at Ravenmoor now, and her adviser was the most renowned mathematician in the country. The week before, because of her outstanding grades, she'd been invited to join the research group he led, an exception to the usual rules. The group met regularly to tackle some of the hardest problems in the world.Reading her email, My feelings were all over the place. I couldn't help thinking: If I'd stood my ground back then and refused to let Silas go to Westbridge in my place, would my life have turned out differently?Co

  • I Married Her to My Twin   Chapter 12

Two weeks earlier, I'd landed in Kingsreach.Home of Ravenmoor University. When I got off the plane, I was surprised to find my old high school classmate, Freya Montrose, waiting at the arrivals exit with a sign that had my name on it.Truth be told, the only reason I'd gotten a second shot at college at Ravenmoor was Freya's recommendation.Freya was the eldest daughter of the Montrose family. When it came to family background or looks, she was every bit Corinne's equal. Maybe that was exactly the problem—the town just wasn't big enough for the two of them. Freya and Corinne had never gotten along, not since they were kids. They couldn't stand each other and were always quietly trying to one-up each other. They were sworn rivals, basically.Freya was a top student too. From elementary through middle school, her grades were always a notch above Corinne's. But once they got to high school, her grades gradually slipped behind.Because Corinne had started dating me, the smartest k
