Chapter 3

Penulis: Blanc Ball
Corinne seemed to have misunderstood. She thought I was selling the house we'd moved into as newlyweds.

I couldn't be bothered to explain, so I just went along with it. "Last night, you slept with Silas in this house. I can't get past it, and I don't want to live here anymore. Is that a problem?"

Corinne froze for a second, then smiled.

"Of course you can. If you don't like this house, I'll give it to your brother and buy you another one next door," she said. "But you can't hold it against me, because I only slept with your brother for your sake.

"I'm a very traditional woman. I could never be with two men. But I love you so much that I was willing to sacrifice myself to help make your brother's wish come true... I've gone this far for you. You should be thanking me. How can you hold it against me?"

It was so outrageous I almost laughed. She'd betrayed me, and I was supposed to thank her?

She was the one who'd wanted to sleep with Silas, yet she was acting like she'd sacrificed herself for me. Did she really think I was so stupid I couldn't see right through her?

Just then, the kitchen door swung open again, and Silas walked in shirtless.

His body was covered in hickeys and scratches, especially his back.

I looked away. I didn't want to see it. But Silas deliberately goaded me. "Emmett, look what your wife did to me. I can't even show my face in public like this."

Corinne instantly turned red. "Don't talk nonsense in front of your brother!"

She was scolding him, but when she saw the scratches all over his back, she couldn't help feeling bad for him. She went upstairs for the first-aid kit, pulled Silas over, and began carefully treating his scratches.

Every so often, their laughter drifted in from the living room. They were horsing around on the couch as if I didn't exist.

I didn't say anything. I wolfed down my breakfast and headed upstairs to start packing. I was leaving the country in three days.

But Corinne suddenly called after me. "Emmett, Silas is hosting a class reunion here today. He's already sent out the invitations. Go change. Everyone will be here soon."

Silas chimed in. "Emmett, I'm throwing this reunion just for you. That whole crowd from high school always mocked you and bullied you. Now that you've married a gorgeous heiress, you have to invite them all over and rub it in their faces."

He made it sound nice. But wasn't the only reason I'd been bullied in high school that he'd hidden in the girls' restroom, filmed our classmates, and framed me for it?

So why was he pretending to be the good guy now?

Before long, our old classmates started arriving. When they found out Corinne and I had just gotten married the day before, everyone was stunned.

"Corinne, did you actually marry Emmett?" someone said indignantly. "Sure, he's a genius—he was ranked first in our grade all through high school—but his character is awful! He hid in the girls' restroom and filmed girls using the bathroom! Isn't that just plain sick?"

"Exactly. Corinne, you're gorgeous and you come from a great family. Why would you marry a creep like Emmett?"

"Honestly, you'd have been better off marrying his brother, Silas. They look exactly the same anyway."

Listening to the chatter, Corinne and Silas exchanged a look. A flirtatious smile lurked in both their eyes.

They were too busy flirting to say a single word in my defense.

Even though they both knew perfectly well I wasn't the one who'd hidden in the girls' restroom filming those girls...

A chill spread through me. At this point, I had no intention of taking the blame for Silas anymore.

So I raised my voice. "The one who hid in the girls' restroom and filmed those girls was Silas, not me. I've been taking the heat for him all these years, but I'm done!"

When she saw the screenshots on my phone, Corinne turned white as a sheet. She stammered, "I... I... Emmett, don't be angry. I wasn't trying to hide it from you. I just forgot about it."Don't worry. I'll have my people take all these stories down right away. I'll clear your name."But I couldn't be bothered with her anymore. I called the police again. After that, Corinne actually left me alone for a while. I thought she'd finally given up on me. But later, Freya told me that Corinne hadn't given up at all. She'd gone back home to clean up after Silas.Because Silas had gotten himself into trouble again.Back when Corinne and I got engaged, I'd spent my life savings on a private residence for my parents at Silver Pines Senior Living, for them to retire in. But later, once I found out my parents had been lying to me all along and using me as Silas's scapegoat, I sold it.My parents didn't know I'd sold it, though. After I left the country, they happily showed up at Silver Pines,

After I'd rejected her again and again, Corinne finally broke down. She sobbed, "Emmett, how can you be so heartless? We've been together for over ten years. Can you really bring yourself to throw me away?"But I couldn't be bothered to keep going around in circles with this shameless woman. I called the police. The police took Corinne away, and my apartment was finally quiet again.I got out the first-aid kit, sat down, and carefully started treating Freya's injuries. In the fight, Corinne's nails had left two scratches on Freya's beautiful face."I'm really sorry for dragging you into this," I said, feeling terrible. But Freya smiled. Suddenly, she reached out and caught the hand holding the cotton swab. "Emmett, your problems are my problems."So don't ever be this polite with me again. It'll hurt my feelings."She paused, then added softly, "Emmett, the truth is, the way I feel about you hasn't changed since high school..."I was stunned. I'd always thought Freya only conf

Now that I'd called her out to her face, Corinne finally went quiet. She stared at me, pale as a ghost. Her mouth opened and closed as if she wanted to say something, but the evidence was undeniable, and she had nothing left to argue. For a long time, she couldn't get a word out."Corinne, I must've been blind to ever love you," I said coldly. "But my eyes are open now. I don't want to waste any more time on someone as revolting as you. Get out of my apartment right now, or I'm calling the police!""Emmett, don't do this," Corinne choked out. "We've been together for so many years. You know how much I love you!"But you're so straitlaced that sometimes I find you a little boring. And your brother is so wild and reckless. He looks just like you, but his personality is the complete opposite. So I lost my head for a moment and got a little interested in him."But it was only a passing thing. It wasn't love. The one I really love is you! You're the one I want to spend the rest of my li

I froze. I didn't even need to step into the living room to guess what was happening.Corinne was here.Honestly, when I left, it never once occurred to me that she'd come looking for me.Because whenever we fought, I was always the one who caved first. She'd never backed down for me, not once, while I'd apologized to her over and over, with no dignity left at all...That was why I hadn't bothered covering my tracks when I left.I'd assumed someone as proud as Corinne would never come all this way herself to beg me to take her back. But she'd found me. Not only had she found me, she was in the living room locked in a full-on brawl with Freya. They were yanking each other's hair, each one more vicious than the other."Freya, you homewrecker! Seducing someone else's husband—you have no shame!" Corinne screamed. "I knew it! Emmett would never just walk out on me on his own. It was you, you bitch, coming between us!""You're the one with no shame, Corinne!" Freya shot back, refusin

After she said that, Freya hugged me.And after that, we didn't see each other again for years. Two years later, I got into Westbridge University's math program, but my parents forced me to give my spot to Silas.Silas partied his way through four years at Westbridge, failed every single class, and got expelled. My degree was ruined for good. That same year—the year Westbridge expelled Silas under my name—Freya suddenly sent me an email. She said she was studying math at Ravenmoor now, and her adviser was the most renowned mathematician in the country. The week before, because of her outstanding grades, she'd been invited to join the research group he led, an exception to the usual rules. The group met regularly to tackle some of the hardest problems in the world.Reading her email, My feelings were all over the place. I couldn't help thinking: If I'd stood my ground back then and refused to let Silas go to Westbridge in my place, would my life have turned out differently?Co

  • I Married Her to My Twin   Chapter 12

Two weeks earlier, I'd landed in Kingsreach.Home of Ravenmoor University. When I got off the plane, I was surprised to find my old high school classmate, Freya Montrose, waiting at the arrivals exit with a sign that had my name on it.Truth be told, the only reason I'd gotten a second shot at college at Ravenmoor was Freya's recommendation.Freya was the eldest daughter of the Montrose family. When it came to family background or looks, she was every bit Corinne's equal. Maybe that was exactly the problem—the town just wasn't big enough for the two of them. Freya and Corinne had never gotten along, not since they were kids. They couldn't stand each other and were always quietly trying to one-up each other. They were sworn rivals, basically.Freya was a top student too. From elementary through middle school, her grades were always a notch above Corinne's. But once they got to high school, her grades gradually slipped behind.Because Corinne had started dating me, the smartest k
