Chapter 4

Author: Golden Muggle
Damian stood at the far end of the corridor, his eyes bloodshot and fixed on me.

He charged forward and pulled the trembling Lila behind him.

"Why would you talk to her like that? She hasn't done anything wrong."

I laughed.

"She hasn't? Then I suppose I'm the one at fault. I waited three years for you, and I got to watch you walk your mistress into my house. Was that my mistake too?"

"She's not my mistress," he snapped. "Lila and I have never crossed that line.

"I only want to give her a proper place at my side. I never said I wouldn't marry you too."

For a moment, all I could do was stare at him.

"Do you think every woman alive should orbit you? You want two wives. What makes you imagine you're worth it?"

He looked wounded, even disappointed.

"You weren't like this before, Vivi. You've become impossible."

"You made me this way."

Watching him shield Lila drove a blade through my chest. The pain nearly took my breath, but I kept my face empty.

"My wedding is tomorrow, Damian. From now on, stay out of my life."

"No."

He seized my wrist hard enough to grind the bones together.

"I won't let you marry Adrian. Do you hear me? I won't allow it."

"Let go."

"Never. You're mine. You always will be."

Adrian's voice came from beside us, cold and quiet.

"She's my fiancée now."

He pried Damian's hand loose and drew me behind him. The smile stayed on his lips, but the warning in his eyes could have stopped an army.

"Control your hands, Cross. Control your woman too."

His gaze flicked over Damian with contempt.

"Stop tearing around like a rabid dog, biting everything you can't have."

The insult destroyed whatever restraint Damian had left.

Roaring, "I'll kill you," he rushed forward again.

Adrian's guards caught him before he got close. Damian struggled uselessly in their grip, but his eyes never left me. Emotions I couldn't read anymore churned behind them.

"You'll regret this, Vivian. You will."

I almost smiled.

Regret?

That word had dropped out of my vocabulary the moment Damian came home with Lila at his side.

I slipped my arm through Adrian's.

"Let's go."

On the drive back, Adrian spoke without looking away from the road.

"Did you love him?"

I watched the city slide past the window and didn't answer.

Had I loved Damian?

Maybe. For three years his name had been something close to a religion to me.

Now that faith had collapsed.

Adrian's voice softened, but the confidence under it didn't.

"Someday you'll love me."

I turned toward him. He drove with complete focus, his profile sharp and striking in the passing light.

I didn't know what the future held.

I knew only that I'd never turn back.

The wedding morning arrived under a cloudless sky.

I stood in front of a mirror in the gown Adrian had flown in from Paris overnight. He came into the room and wrapped his arms around me from behind.

"Nervous?"

"No."

"I've put men on Damian. He isn't getting out today."

I nodded.

We held the ceremony in a private chapel outside the city, with heavy security and only a handful of family and friends in the pews.

I walked down an aisle scattered with white roses, my hand resting on my father's arm.

Adrian waited at the altar in a white tuxedo. When he saw me, he smiled and held out his hand.

I put mine in his.

The officiant's solemn voice filled the chapel.

"Adrian Blackwood, do you take Vivian Vale to be your wife, in sickness and in—"

"I do."

Adrian answered before the question was finished.

Warm laughter rippled through the pews.

The officiant turned to me.

"Vivian Vale, do you take—"

"She does not!"

The shout cut through the vow and the wedding both.

The chapel doors crashed inward.

Damian stood in the entrance, dressed head to toe in black, a detonator in one hand and his eyes burning red.

His clothes didn't fit. His face was bruised, but he stared at me with the fierce, unblinking eyes of a wolf. The boy was Adrian. The memory came back in a rush. I'd been sixteen, outside the Vale family's training gym, teaching a lesson to a group of street punks who had come looking for trouble."You were there?"Adrian's voice turned rough."I was one of them. An enemy of your father paid our crew to go provoke the Vales."I stopped breathing."I stayed at the back. Before I had a chance to move, you came storming outside."He laughed without humor."Your whip caught the guy next to me, but it woke me up too. "That was the first time I understood a woman could live like that—like a fire nobody could put out.""I left the crew that night. I decided I'd get strong enough to stand out in the open beside you one day instead of hiding in the shadows."Adrian lifted the dried petal."This fell out of your hair after the fight."Then he picked up the ticket."You mentioned

This time, I wasn't marrying to punish anyone or to secure an alliance.I just wanted the man standing in front of me.I wanted a lifetime with him.Our second wedding was private. No guests, only Adrian, me, and the officiant. In a small chapel full of sunlight, we exchanged rings. When Adrian kissed me, I closed my eyes and felt a peace I'd never known before.Married life was quiet and happy.Adrian spoiled me shamelessly. He made breakfast himself, it never tasted particularly good. He sat reading beside me while I worked, content to share the room without interrupting. He remembered every anniversary and always prepared a surprise for me.People in our world joked that the Blackwood Reaper had married the Vale heiress and lost all his sharp edges. They were wrong.Adrian was every bit as dangerous as before. He'd simply sheathed every blade for me and let only me touch the softest part of him.Once, I asked him when he'd started loving me.He thought about it for a lon

"Leave me!" Damian shouted. "Vivian, run!"I looked at Lila's twisted expression, then at the man barely conscious against the column.I started to bend my knees as though I meant to obey. My hand slipped toward the signal transmitter hidden in my pocket. Before I could press it, the warehouse doors flew inward under a powerful kick.Blinding daylight flooded the room.Adrian stood in the opening with his men behind him.His gaze swept the warehouse and landed on me. Something terrifying came into his eyes."You're all dead," he said. His people rushed the K Syndicate men, and the warehouse erupted into chaos.Adrian went straight for Lila. Her face changed. She grabbed for Damian, meaning to use him as a hostage, but she was never going to match Adrian's speed. He kicked the knife out of her hand, closed one hand around her throat, and lifted her off the floor."Who gave you permission to touch what's mine?"His voice was colder than ice.Lila's face darkened as she claw

The next few days passed without incident.Damian vanished so completely he might never have existed.Adrian stayed close. We went out to dinner, wandered through shops, and sat together in dark movie theaters like any couple newly in love. Our relationship changed in the quiet of those ordinary days.I got used to his company, and to his occasional possessiveness and tenderness.I started to believe life might settle into something good. Then an unfamiliar number called me.Lila's tearful voice came through the phone."Miss Vale, please, you have to save Damian."He's going after the K Syndicate because of you. They'll kill him."I frowned. "Where is he?"She gave me an address at an abandoned shipping yard beyond the city.I ended the call, grabbed my keys, and left without hesitating.Adrian was out. I tried to call him and got no answer.I couldn't wait.I knew Lila was setting a trap. She certainly wasn't calling out of kindness. But Damian had spent too many years

The guards hauled Damian out before he could finish.Lila? What had she told him about Adrian? The crisis was over, but the wedding was ruined. Our guests were pale and shaken, and my father's face might as well have been carved from stone.Adrian took my hand."I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I let them wreck our wedding.""This wasn't your fault."The performance had belonged to Damian alone.Still, his unfinished warning lodged under my skin like a splinter. There was no salvaging the ceremony. Adrian calmed our guests and sent everyone home.I didn't speak on the drive back."You're thinking about what Damian said," he observed."Who is Lila Hart?""No one who matters."The dismissal told me the opposite.Damian was reckless, but he wasn't stupid. If Lila had talked him into risking everything, she'd been whispering in his ear for a long time."Adrian, are you hiding something from me?"He went quiet. When he finally looked at me, his dark eyes seemed bottomless."S

Damian's most reckless men crowded in behind him. They'd already surrounded the chapel. The guests cried out, and the room dissolved into panic.Damian ignored every scream. His gaze came straight for me, sharp enough to cut."Vivi. Come here."His voice sounded scraped raw, like something that had clawed its way out of hell.Adrian put himself between us at once."Touch her and see what happens."Damian raised the detonator."This has nothing to do with you, Blackwood. Get out of my way!"He swept his glare across the chapel."I've packed this place with explosives. Anyone who wants to live should stay out of my way!"He'd gone mad.Truly, completely mad.My father shook with rage."You treacherous bastard."Damian laughed, wild and unhinged."You taught me this, Boss. If you want something, you take it by any means necessary."His obsessive stare found me again."Now I'm taking back my woman."Nobody moved."One last time, Vivi. Are you coming to me?"The chapel
