Chapter 3

作者: Echoes Everywhere
[I can’t explain it either. I want to know too!]

[Yarden called her and asked for the address. He is driving to the construction site now.]

I stared at the chat and forgot what I was about to do. Something in my chest felt a little empty. I walked to the wine cabinet. I wanted to take a bottle.

The chat floated across my vision again.

[Stephen drinks too much. Now that his son is back, what if he gets drunk and hits the kid?]

[Right. Ruby still doesn’t know that the child has been found. In the later story, she has no child. This kid must have been killed by Stephen.]

I paused and quietly put the bottle back in the cabinet before locking it. My phone suddenly buzzed.

Ruby sent a message.

[Remember to eat dinner. Don’t drink on an empty stomach. Don’t sit in the dark and use your phone. Don’t stay up too late.]

I looked at the message for a while.

All of a sudden, I did not want to divorce her anymore.

A week later, I received a bank notification.

Ruby had transferred me some money. She had also left a note.

[This is two weeks’ salary. Take it and use it first.]

The amount was not large. The numbers were uneven.

I stared at the message for a while as the chat instantly flooded in.

[Ruby really left herself only enough for bread!]

[She has blisters on her hands and still thinks about her ex-husband.]

I slowly got up from the couch.

I touched the photo in my pocket and said slowly, “Casper, your mom looks like she is about to starve.”

Then, I walked into the kitchen. I had barely stepped into it in these past three years. Ruby had always cooked all kinds of dishes for me. I only knew how to cook instant noodles, and I often burned them.

I searched for recipes. I nearly cut my hand and forgot to add salt.

After two hours of struggle, I finally made a pot of soup.

Then, I went to the pharmacy and bought antiseptic as well as bandages.

I followed the scattered hints from the chat about the “new development area in the south of the city” and took a cab there.

The construction site was full of dust.

I stood at the entrance in soft home clothes and sneakers. I held a thermos. I looked completely out of place.

The chat laughed at me.

[Stephen looks kind of cute like this.]

I was looking around when a white car pulled up.

Yarden got out. He held a neatly packed food box.

He saw me as well. His smile stiffened for a moment before it returned to its usual elegance.

“Mr. Wilson?” he walked over. “What are you doing in a place like this?”

He looked at my thermos and chuckled.

“Bringing food for Ruby? Her stomach is weak. She can’t handle anything too oily.”

I looked down at my soup.

“It’s chicken soup. It’s not oily. I already skimmed the oil off.”

Yarden stepped closer and lowered his voice.

“Mr. Wilson, there are some things you may not understand. Ruby is at her hardest stage right now. She needs someone who can help her rise again. Not someone who only knows how to make soup.”

I thought about it for three seconds.

“But she is carrying bricks right now. Carrying bricks needs strength. Presently, helping her to ‘rise again’ isn’t relevant.” I paused and added, “I’m not someone who only makes soup. I can earn money myself. I just haven’t figured out how to do it yet.”

The chat was stunned.

[Yarden got completely shut down.]

[Stephen’s logic is always strange, but somehow you can’t refute it.]

When the atmosphere froze, Ruby walked out of the construction site.

She wore a dusty work uniform and had bandages on her hands. Sweat covered her forehead. She saw us and clearly paused.

Yarden immediately moved toward her. “Ruby, I brought you food…”

Ruby walked straight past him and came to me instead.

Her brows were slightly furrowed. “Why are you here? There is too much dust here.”

I lifted the thermos and the bag of medicine.

“I brought you soup and medicine.”

Ruby’s eyes softened. When she took the things from me, her fingers trembled slightly.

Yarden’s face turned pale. “Ruby, I came here specially…”

Ruby turned to him. Her tone was polite and distant.

“Mr. Smith, thank you for your kindness, but I don’t need it. Don’t come again, please.”

“We went to school together and left school together. She didn’t talk much, but she treated me differently from others. Her mother even said she wanted us to get engaged before she passed away.”[Here we go again!][Stephen, don’t believe him!]I looked at him and said slowly, “Oh.”Yarden froze.“That’s it? That’s your reaction?”“And?” I put down my strawberries. “Everything you spoke about was in the past.”“Don’t you feel disgusted? Your wife was with another man.”I thought about it.“She never told me any of that, but she did say that she wanted nothing to do with you.”“You just believe whatever she says?”“Yeah.” I nodded.Yarden’s face darkened. He was about to say something when footsteps came from behind.Ruby walked over quickly, anger written on her face.“Mr. Smith, who let you in?”Yarden turned around. His expression changed in an instant. It became soft and harmless.“Ruby, I just wanted to check on Mr. Wilson and Cas. I mean no harm…”Ruby stood besi

[The atmosphere in this family feels so oppressive.][Will Stephen be able to adapt?][Ms. Xander, please protect him!]I did not pay much attention to the chat because Cas was hungry.Cas tugged at my sleeve and said in a soft voice, “Daddy, hungry.”His voice was not loud, but the hall was quiet. Everyone heard it clearly. The atmosphere immediately turned strange.[Hahaha, Stephen, are you here to make us laugh?][Calling out “hungry” at a rich family reunion is wild.][But kids do get hungry.]Ruby’s lips curved slightly.“All right.” She turned to the butler. “Bring out the snacks we prepared.”Then, she held my hand and led me past everyone’s judging eyes toward the backyard.“I prepared a separate courtyard for you. It’s quiet and close to the kitchen,” she said softly. “You can ask for food anytime. Cas also has a playroom ready.”The courtyard Ruby prepared was even better than I expected. The small garden was full of flowers, and there was also a glass greenhou

“Once I’m done handling everything, I’ll bring you and Cas back.”[The divorce was actually meant to protect Stephen and Casper!][Wait, she said it was to protect Stephen from the Xander family. She never even mentioned Yarden.]I thought about it and asked, “What about Yarden?”Ruby’s eyes widened.“I have nothing to do with him.”“But three years ago at the bar, you were drunk because of—”“It wasn’t because of Yarden.”She cut me off. Her voice suddenly lowered.“It was because of you.”I froze.Ruby looked at me. Her eyes slowly turned teary.“I didn’t get drunk at the bar three years ago because Yarden went overseas. It was because… I let you find me on purpose.”The chat blew up.[Massive twist!][So Stephen didn’t randomly pick her up. She planned it?][What kind of long game is this?]“Three years ago, I already knew you. Even earlier than that. Once, you helped an old man who fell on the street. I just happened to pass by. You knelt and wiped the dirt off his

A nurse came in to change Ruby’s dressing. She saw the three of us leaning close together and smiled.“Ms. Xander, you really scared your husband this time. When he brought you in, his face was even paler than yours.”Ruby turned to look at me.I said seriously, “I have anemia. I wasn’t scared.”The chat burst into laughter.[Stephen, this is not the time to correct that!][Ms. Xander be like, “I’ll never understand what’s going on in my husband’s mind.”][But why is that kind of cute?]After the dressing change, Ruby said she wanted to change hospitals.“The conditions here are average. I contacted a private hospital. I’ll be transferred there tomorrow.”I felt confused. “Didn’t you say you ran out of money? Private hospitals are expensive.”Ruby paused.“I have enough money,” she said. Her voice sounded a little unclear. The chat floated again.[Ruby is definitely hiding something.][She is definitely more than just a bankrupt CEO.][The Xander family… I bet it is tha

In three years of marriage, this was the first time I saw her cry.Even the chat fell silent for a moment.[Ms. Xander is crying…][She really loved Stephen that much, didn’t she?][She didn’t cry when she thought the child was illegitimate. Now she knows the child is hers, and she’s finally crying.][That’s the fear hitting her after everything.]I reached out and wiped her tears with my sleeve.“Don’t cry.”Ruby opened her eyes and grabbed my hand. She held it tightly, as if she were afraid I would leave.“I’m sorry,” she said. Her voice was hoarse. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions without asking…”“You really didn’t ask.” I nodded. “You said I had an illegitimate child right away. I didn’t even get a chance to speak. You coughed up blood before I could say anything.”Ruby froze.“I coughed up blood?”“Yeah. A lot. You scared me.”The chat floated across my vision again.[Stephen sounds like he’s talking about the weather.][His reaction time is slo

But in the end, her eyes still slowly closed. The chat floated across my vision again.[Did she hear it?][She must have heard it. Stephen said it so loudly.][Ms. Xander looked like she had heard it before she fainted.][The doctor is here! The doctor is here!]Emergency staff rushed over and lifted Ruby onto a stretcher.I followed behind. I held Cas in one hand and the report folder in the other.Yarden tried to follow, but a nurse stopped him.“Are you family?”“I’m her—”“Ex-husband,” I said without turning back. “I’m her ex-husband. The child in my arms is her biological son.”The nurse froze for a second. She did not stop Yarden anymore, but she did not let him into the ambulance either. The doors closed. The ambulance sped toward the hospital.I sat next to Ruby. I looked at her unconscious face, and my eyes suddenly felt a little wet.It was not sadness. It felt more like frustration. I had tried to tell her many times, but I never got the chance. The chat floa
