Chapter 2

Author: Sweet Beet
The next day, Eldwin arrived at my family’s estate to ask Rosalie and me for our hands in marriage. He brought two sets of gifts, one for each of us.

Rosalie’s consisted of forty-eight chests full of jewelry and charters for lands.

Mine, on the other, was a palm-sized jewelry box with a handful of gold nuggets in it.

My mother burst with rage on the spot and wanted to throw that box out of the house.

Rosalie immediately kneeled down in front of my mother nervously. “Please forgive me, Mrs. Shaw. I am willing to hand over my gifts to Lina.”

Eldwin immediately put himself between Rosalie and my mother. “You are as heartless as your daughter, Mrs. Shaw. I can’t imagine how difficult it has been for Rosie to grow up in the Shaw family’s estate and how badly you both must have mistreated her.”

Rosalie hid behind Eldwin with a pitiful, aggrieved look on her face.

I reached out to grab my mother’s arm. “Just hand the gift back to him, mother. There is no need to argue with them.”

My mother could not stand the accusation and immediately snapped, “This little rat always pretends to be helpless. I have never mistreated her in all these years!”

Eldwin’s expression darkened. “Since Rosie has married me, she is now Lady Gennings. How dare you insult her in front of so many people?! I will teach you a lesson.”

Eldwin’s father was a marquess, while my mother was only the wife of a government official. If he held her accountable, it would bring us a lot of trouble.

I bowed to Eldwin.

“It was a slip of the tongue. Please forgive my mother, Lord Gennings.”

Eldwin lifted his chin and said cockily, “That is all? A slip of the tongue? No, I want you both to apologize to Rosie.”

My mother screamed with rage, “How ridiculous! How outrageous! A mistress of a household should not have to apologize to the child of her husband’s concubine!”

I quickly whispered in my mother’s ear. She backed down and stormed back into the house.

Then, I looked over at Eldwin and Rosalie. “If my mother apologizes, everyone in the city will say that my sister is disrespectful. I will apologize on my mother’s behalf.”

Eldwin could not let Rosalie bear the blame of being disrespectful to her elderly, so he did not insist on making my mother apologize.

He took Rosalie’s hand and led her to where he had placed her gifts as if he was showing off his wealth. Every item in her chests was priceless.

In contrast, the gold nuggets he gave me looked like a joke.

I picked up the box and handed it back to Eldwin. “Here, take it back.”

Eldwin was rather angry. “I only brought you a gift out of formality. When the queen’s order arrives, you will have to marry me even if I don’t give you a penny.”

I did not bother to explain anything to him and simply returned the gold nuggets before turning around and walking away.

While I was preparing medicine for the queen, Eldwin stormed in with Rosalie in tow. “There was a huge pearl in one of the chests I gave Rosie. Did you take it?”

I frowned and answered, “No.”

“As if I would believe you. We shall find out once I search your place.”

Rosalie immediately rummaged through my study. All my herbs and medicines were scattered on the floor.

“If you can’t find the pearl, I will demand an apology,” I said in anger.

Just then, Rosalie picked up a pearl from a corner behind the door. She looked very pleased. “I found it, Eld.”

Eldwin took the pearl from Rosalie and turned to me. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

I looked at the pearl that appeared out of nowhere. “Rosalie brought it into my study to frame me. I did not steal from her!”

“The evidence is against you, yet you still dare to deny your wrongdoings! I will report to the queen and cancel our engagement!”

Eldwin took Rosalie’s hand and stalked out angrily.

I had not done anything wrong, so I was not afraid of him reporting this incident to the queen.

After they left, I tidied the scattered herbs and medicine in the study. Later on, the queen’s handmaidens came over to collect Her Majesty’s medicine.

Unexpectedly, after the queen took the medicine that night, she fainted.

Eldwin glanced at the furious look on the king’s face and kicked Rosalie. He did not want to be dragged into her mess.“You seduced me shamelessly. Now that you have been found guilty of such a heinous crime, there is no way my family will want you as my wife.”Rosalie collapsed on the floor in despair, and the guards dragged her away. The next day, she was beheaded. Harming the queen was punishable by death. The king was lenient by not punishing the rest of the Shaw family for it, so my father did not dare to risk the king’s wrath by giving Rosalie a proper burial. At the end, her body was discarded in a mass grave and became food to stray animals. She got the ending I had suffered in my past life. One could say that it was some kind of cosmic justice.Meanwhile, I was happily getting ready for the wedding. However, on the night before my wedding, Eldwin climbed over the wall and into my yard. I stared at him coldly, “What do you want from me?”He walked over and pulled me int

Rosalie could not believe that Eldwin would say that to her. Her eyes were brimming with tears.“Do you mean to say that you don’t trust me, Eld?”Every time Rosalie pretended to be frail and innocent, Eldwin believed her. But this time, it stopped working.Eldwin yanked his sleeve out of Rosalie’s grip and let the royal guards take her away. Then, he looked over at me and said, “I did not defend you in the palace the other day, so today, I did not defend Rosie either. You are even. Could you stop being mad at me now, Catalina?”I was so baffled by Eldwin’s logic that I gave an angry bark of laughter. “If it were not for Javien, who risked his life to break into the palace and save the queen, I would have been beheaded. Would you kill Rosalie to compensate me, then?”For a moment, Eldwin was at a loss for words.Knowing that it was pointless to argue with him, I took Javien’s hand and brought him to my room.I took out a jar of high quality medicinal ointment and applied it on

“Is that right? Well, we will see.”No secret could be hidden forever. As long as Rosalie committed a crime, she would certainly have left a trace. I wondered if Eldwin would defend her when the truth was revealed.A few days later, Javien’s wounds recovered. He could not wait to prepare my wedding gifts and send them to my house. There were one hundred and twenty-eight boxes full of gifts. Every woman in the Royal Capital was envious.I looked at the heaps of priceless goods in my front yard and wondered if Javien had given everything in his house to me. While the Shaw family’s estate was filled with a celebratory mood, Eldwin suddenly pointed his sword at Javien.“I challenge you to a duel, Javien. Do you dare to fight me? If you lose, you will get out of here and take these gifts with you!”I was baffled by Eldwin’s bizarre action. A surge of anger burst in me. “What the hell do you think you’re doing, Eldwin? Have you gone insane?”Eldwin seemed confused. He did not unders

In my past life, my body was thrown into a mass grave by Eldwin and Rosalie.Javien, who had only met me several times, was running an errand for the king outside the city at the time. When he heard the news, he hurried back to retrieve my body and bury it in the Quinn family’s crypt. That was why I chose to marry him in this life. I thought he liked me. Did I get the wrong idea?“It was very reckless of me to ask the queen to marry you, Javien. If you are unwilling, I will meet with Her Majesty right away and ask her to take back the edict.”Javien reached over to take my hand and said anxiously, “I am willing to marry you, Catalina. I… like you.”Hearing his confession, I was relieved. I had already experienced the pain of marrying a man who did not love me. In this life, I wished to marry one who did.I picked up a jar of medicinal ointment and looked at him with a bright smile. “Let me put the ointment for you.”A shy expression appeared on Javien’s face. “It’s all right. Eldwin grabbed my wrist and said, “The queen must have been mistaken. You are supposed to marry me, not Javien. Let’s head to the palace and tell her about it.”I flung him off and said coldly, “She did not make a mistake. I told you that I wasn’t going to marry you.”Eldwin stared at me incredulously. “Catalina…”My mother shoved him away. She looked at me and said, “Quick, pay Javien a visit. The king ordered him to be whipped sixty times because he barged into the palace to save you last night.”She explained that when the news about my arrest got out, she had no one to turn to for help. At that moment, she recalled what I told her a while ago: I had asked the queen to let me marry Javien. Therefore, my mother quickly went to Javien and told him that I loved him, as well as the news about the queen’s order. She begged him to think of a way to save my life. After hearing that, Javien rushed out of the city to get my mentor, who was a great physician. However, the palace gate w

The next morning, royal guards stormed into my family’s estate and accused me of attempting to murder the queen. They arrested me and took me to the royal palace to face judgement.Coincidentally, Eldwin had also come to meet the queen. When he saw me, he snorted coldly and said, “Don’t think that I will let the theft slide just because you intercepted me at the palace.“Only if you promise to never bully Rosie again will I forgive you and not expose your deed in front of the queen.”I stared at him and said frantically, “Her Majesty fainted after taking the medicine I made last night!”Eldwin was shocked. “What? Aren’t you an expert physician? How could you make such a mistake? Don’t you know that harming the queen is punishable by death?”I glared at him with bloodshot eyes and barked angrily, “There was nothing wrong with the medicine I made! Rosalie went through my stuff yesterday and messed it up!”Eldwin was startled again. After a moment, he said, “It must have been a mist
