Chapter 4 The Wife She Never Saw Coming

Author: Fish Cares
Selene's smile froze, and she stared at me in disbelief, her brows knitting together tightly. "What nonsense are you talking about?"

She took a step forward, her tone dripping with arrogance. "You claim to be married, but where is your wife? Why isn't she here with you?"

A mocking smile tugged at my lips. "My wife's on a business trip. She's not like certain useless people who can't survive without leeching off a man."

Before she could explode, Chase's eyes reddened with anger. "Mr. Schreiber, how could you say that about Selene?"

He paused deliberately, just long enough for Selene's expression to twist with anger and disappointment. "Jace, look at yourself. So bitter, so spiteful—who would ever want you besides me? Stop playing these petty mind games. It only makes me look down on you more!"

I'd run out of patience. "Security! Did you not hear me? Throw these two out—now!"

The guards moved swiftly, grabbing them by the arms. Selene struggled wildly, her face contorted with fury as she screamed, "Jace Schreiber! How dare you do this to me?! You'll regret it!"

That night, a text came from an unknown number. 'You think you can steal Selene away from me? Guess what—she doesn't even care. She's happily on vacation abroad with me right now.'

I didn't need to wonder who sent it.

I blocked the number immediately.

Over the next few days, Daniel and Rebecca showed up at my door more than once, desperate to talk, but I refused to let them in.

A week later, I checked the flight schedule and drove to the airport to pick up Aria. Just as I stepped into the international arrivals hall, I ran straight into Selene and Chase, who both had gotten a little tanned, wearing sunglasses and looking every bit like a couple returning from a carefree vacation.

When Selene spotted me, her lips curved in smug triumph. "I knew you couldn't stay away. You even came to pick me up!"

I didn't bother responding, just looked at her as if she were an idiot.

"Come on, Mr. Schreiber, don't be mad," Chase said, his tone dripping with mock sympathy. "Selene didn't mean to leave you behind. As her fiance, you should be more understanding."

Selene looked pleased by his words. She reached out to take my arm, but I stepped aside, dodging her touch. Instead of getting angry, she seemed even more self-satisfied, assuming I was just sulking. "Alright, stop pouting. Once we get the marriage certificate, I'll make it up to you with a proper luxury honeymoon. How's that sound?"

I didn't answer her.

Instead, I walked right past both of them and wrapped Aria in my arms as she emerged from the gate. "Welcome home, sweetheart."

Aria smiled and hugged me back, pressing a soft kiss to my cheek.

Behind us, Selene's triumphant smile shattered in an instant.

For a moment, the world went silent—until she shrilled with rage. "Jace Schreiber, have you lost your mind?!"

She stormed toward us, jabbing a finger at Aria. "You hire an actress just to spite me?! Nice performance. How much did she charge you? Tell me the number—I'll pay ten times more to make her leave right now!"

Aria stepped forward, shielding me. The warmth in her eyes vanished, replaced by an icy calm that sent a chill through the air. But I caught her hand and stood beside her, watching Selene's twisted expression with amused detachment.

"Didn't you want to meet my wife, Selene?" I said evenly, slipping an arm around Aria's waist. "Well, here she is. Allow me to introduce her properly—this is my wife, Aria Grant."

Selene's face turned ghostly pale. "It's… you?!"

Aria instinctively shielded her belly, and I immediately stepped in front of her, my voice cold as ice. "Ms. Liraine, stay away from my wife.""Why…" Selene didn't even hear me. Her eyes were locked on me, blazing with bitterness and despair. "Why do you get to live so happily? You ruined everything—my family, my life! Why do you still get to be happy?""I ruined you?" I couldn't help but laugh at her refusal to face the truth. "Selene, the only person who destroyed you was yourself. Your arrogance, your selfishness, your stupidity—you buried everything you had with your own hands. As for why I can be happy…"I turned to Aria, who was gazing at me with quiet affection, her smile as soft as light. I smiled back, then looked at Selene again and said clearly, "It's because I chose the right person."That was the final straw. Selene snapped. She lunged toward Aria like a madwoman, screaming, "I'll kill you! You bitch!"Grimly, I kicked her square in the chest before she could get cl

One night, Selene showed up at my house completely drunk, pounding on the door like a madwoman. "Jace! Open the door! Get out here! You heartless bastard! How could you be so cruel? Have you forgotten all those years we spent together? My father's dying! The company's going under! Do you really want to see me fall apart?"I stood by the upstairs window, watching her throw her tantrum below with cold detachment. Aria came up behind me, slipped her arms around my waist, and said softly, "Don't look—she's an eyesore. I'll have security deal with her."I shook my head. "No need."Stepping out onto the balcony, I looked down at the woman who had once been so proud and untouchable, now reduced to a pitiful mess. "Selene, do you finally realize what you've done?"At the sound of my voice, she jerked her head up, her eyes bloodshot and wet with tears. "Jace… I've realized my mistake, I really have…"She collapsed to her knees and broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. "I shouldn't have been

The applause that followed was sparse and half-hearted; most people were simply there to watch the spectacle unfold.I stood among the crowd, quietly enjoying the farce. Aria tightened her grip on my hand and whispered, "Do you want to leave?"I shook my head, a faintly amused smile curving my lips. "No. The show's just getting started. Why would I leave now?"Taking the microphone from the stand, I walked unhurriedly up to the stage. All eyes immediately turned to me. Selene watched in panic, terrified that I might drop another bombshell.Facing the guests and the cameras, I offered a polite smile. "First of all, congratulations to Ms. Liraine and Mr. Riverton on their marriage and future success in business."I paused, then reached into my pocket and raised a marriage certificate high for everyone to see. "Secondly, I'd like to clarify something. Half a month ago, I already registered my marriage with my wife, Aria Grant. I'm here today purely as a guest—to offer my congratulati

Selene was completely stunned, all color drained from her face as she watched Chase walk down the aisle toward her. "Chase? What are you doing here?" she asked in a panicked whisper.Chase stopped in front of her, slipped an arm around her shoulders with practiced intimacy, and murmured, "Well, it's our wedding day, isn't it?"Then he leaned closer to her ear and whispered, "Did you forget our plan? Once we get married today, I can officially help you. My uncle's one of Southwyn's top investors. Once he steps in, Liraine Co.'s crisis will be solved."Selene stiffened. Only then did she remember that Chase had mentioned something similar a few days ago—that he had a wealthy uncle who would be willing to invest in Liraine Co. if they were to marry. At the time, she had been so obsessed with winning me back that she hadn't taken his words seriously. Now, with countless cameras flashing below the stage and guests whispering among themselves, she found herself trapped. If this wedding

Selene truly outdid herself this time—the wedding spectacle she arranged was even grander than the last. Every media outlet in the city had been invited, and the trending pages across social platforms had all been reserved in advance. The headlines were strikingly uniform: 'Liraine Co. CEO Selene Liraine, True to Her Heart, Righting Past Regrets—A Lavish Second Wedding to Honor the Schreiber Heir.'My parents were so furious that they nearly stormed over to the Liraine Residence to confront her, but I stopped them. "Mom, Dad, don't get mad. Just sit back and enjoy the show," I calmed them down, already having a plan in mind.…On the day of the wedding, I chose a casual suit—comfortable yet refined. Aria wore a matching cocktail dress, her hand in mine as we arrived together.By the time we reached the venue, the place was already packed, a sea of people flashing cameras left and right. Selene stood at the end of the red carpet in a white wedding gown, her face glowing with smug c

The moment Selene recognized who stood before her, her expression darkened. "Jace Schreiber, do you take me for a fool?"She jabbed a finger at Aria. "She's the stand-in I hired for 100 thousand dollars! What, the wedding performance wasn't enough for you, so now you're parading her around to keep playing house?"Chase covered his mouth in mock surprise, though the contempt in his eyes was unmistakable. "Mr. Schreiber, how could you do this? Selene's already been under immense pressure trying to save her family's business. Instead of helping her, you stage this childish drama just to upset her? That's incredibly immature of you."He turned toward Selene, his voice soft and coaxing. "Selene, don't be angry. Mr. Schreiber is only doing this because he loves you too much. He's just trying to get your attention."Selene's expression softened at that, her arrogance returning little by little. "Jace, I really underestimated you. I can't believe you'd stoop so low just to make me go back
