Chapter 3

Author: Jo NoBite
I fell to the floor, my back slamming into the cold wall. The pain left me gasping for air. After years of being cooped up indoors, I had grown terribly frail, so I couldn't take a blow like that from Clara.

I picked up my cane and forced myself to my feet. "I may be blind, but I'm not stupid. Clara, you know exactly what you've done to me."

Clara sounded slightly panicked. "What do you mean? There's nothing going on between Desmond and me.

"If there's something you want to know, you can always ask me. You can't go around hitting people like that.

"Look at what you've done. What would my employees think of me? Or you?"

Before I could even defend myself, Desmond spoke up first, sounding aggrieved. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have brought Brandon to your office without asking you.

"Now he's gotten the wrong idea about us. From now on, I'll stay away from you two. I won't let something like this happen again. I'll just leave, okay?"

With that, Desmond ran off.

Clara ran after him without a second thought.

As her footsteps faded into the distance, I could no longer hold on and collapsed.

"Clara, it's over between us."

By the time I came to again, I was already lying in a hospital bed. Just then, Clara gave me a call.

"Brandon, I hope you won't take what happened today to heart. I didn't mean to scold you, but there were so many employees watching us.

"I only said all that to protect you. Otherwise, what would others think of you? Just get some rest in the hospital, and don't get yourself all worked up.

"I'm on my way there now. Once I get there, I'll make sure you get another checkup. Don't be upset, okay? I'll take you abroad for your birthday this year."

What a liar.

I could tell how angry Clara was when she lashed out at me earlier. She was genuinely upset with me, but she had only said all those things to me to appease me. She was afraid I would slip out of her grasp and uncover the truth.

Clara was afraid I would go after her beloved Desmond.

Unfortunately, I was done playing along.

Clara had taken my eyes away. In a way, that was enough to repay the Vances for raising me all these years.

From now on, we were even. Once Clara arrived at the hospital, I would bring up the divorce.

A few moments later, the door opened, but it wasn't Clara.

It was her assistant. There was a hint of sympathy in her voice. "Mr. Muhl, Ms. Vance had to fly abroad for a last-minute project meeting.

"She sent me here to take care of you. If there's anything you need, please let me know. Also, she asked me to get you this strawberry cake. She hopes this will cheer you up."

I remained expressionless. "Got it."

I felt a chill spread through me, my phone growing warm in my hand. Word had just gotten out that Desmond's wife had been caught at a hotel overseas with a male celebrity.

Clara had probably gone abroad just to deal with the scandal. She wanted to offer Desmond her support. She was so eager to help him that she couldn't even be bothered to call me and explain things herself. All she did was send her assistant to brush me off.

And Clara had forgotten that I hated strawberry cake more than anything else. Mom and Dad had died in a car accident while out buying me one.

Clara only had eyes for Desmond, and nothing else mattered to her.

The next morning, I called Clara. I decided it would be better to tell her about the divorce myself.

The call went through, but it was Desmond who answered. "Brandon, did you really think Clara married you because she loved you?"

Then I immediately heard Clara's sleepy voice in the background. "Desmond, who's on the line?"

"It's just a spam call from a telemarketer." He ended the call, and the line went dead.

I didn't call Clara again. I was running out of time. After changing my clothes, I returned to Clara's villa and started packing my things. I only took what I had brought with me when I first moved in.

When the butler asked what was going on, I lied that Clara and I were going on vacation. Then I left a signed copy of the divorce agreement and a USB drive containing the audio recording on her desk.

With my suitcase in hand, I got into a car and headed for the airport. The moment I got there, I received a message from Clara.

"Brandon, I'll be home tomorrow morning. I got you a little something from abroad."

I didn't respond. Instead, I removed my SIM card and tossed it into the trash can.

After the plane landed in Nanrope, I got into a car and headed for the eye hospital. As the nurses wheeled me into the operating room, I remained strangely calm.

Once the surgery was over, I would finally be able to see again.

While I was in Nanrope, I created many new paintings, and I entered some of them in art competitions. I returned home on the day of the awards ceremony. I stood onstage, sharing the stories behind my work."There was a time when I couldn't see at all, and looking back, those were some of the darkest days of my life. The woman I loved betrayed me and lied to me. "She let me think she saved me, leaving me trapped in a web of lies. Still, I found the strength to keep going, even through those tough times. "I've poured everything I've been through into this painting. It represents my past and a new chapter in my life."The moment I finished my speech, I was greeted with a round of applause. I noticed a woman sniffling in a corner. It was Clara. That night, Vance Group secured my painting for the night's highest price. I knew Clara was trying to make it up to me, but I wasn't Desmond. I didn't need her doing things like that for me. As I was about to leave, Clara came over and s

Third-Person POVMeanwhile, Clara went to see Desmond. "Desmond, I used to like you, but that's all in the past. Right now, you're nothing more than a friend."Could you clear things up online? Everyone's going after Brandon."Desmond's expression immediately darkened, and his voice grew tense with anger. "People online are getting all worked up now."If I clear things up, they'll come after me instead. Can you really stand by and let them treat me that way?"And what do you mean 'That's all in the past?' Over the past two years, you've spent more time with me than with Brandon. How did you end up falling for him?"Have you forgotten? You took away his eyes just for me. How could he even forgive you after finding out the truth?"Clara, your marriage to Brandon was only an act. How did you end up falling for him?"Clara stared at Desmond, suddenly feeling as if she didn't know him anymore. In fact, she couldn't even remember why she had fallen for him in the first place. At th

I hadn't been keeping tabs on Desmond and Clara, but their names kept popping up on my news feed over the past few days. That was because he had just gotten divorced. People started digging up old stories of Clara spending a fortune on Desmond's paintings over the years. People online called them a match made in heaven. It was a love story of a wealthy, beautiful woman and a talented artist. Some even speculated his divorce meant she had finally won him over.Later, someone found out that Clara was already married, and they even shared photos of me online. At that time, I had just lost my sight, so I looked terribly haggard. Netizens mocked me for my disability, saying I wasn't good enough for Clara. They said she and Desmond were a perfect match instead.I didn't even need to think twice about who was behind everything. Desmond must have paid people to spread these stories online. The Vances were hardly anybody when Clara and I got married. It was Desmond who married into

Meanwhile, I was in Nanrope, lying in a hospital bed. A bandage covered my eyes. The doctor said the surgery was a huge success. With proper recovery, I would be able to see again and live a normal life. After regaining consciousness, I started to feel discomfort in my eyes. They stung, and even the slightest bit of light was unbearable. I couldn't open my eyes at all. The pain was agonizing, but I wasn't upset. I had spent two years unable to see anything. What was a little pain compared to that?A week later, I was able to see again. I rented a room in Nanrope, ready to start a new life here. I picked up a pencil and started drawing again. It had been two years since I had drawn anything. My drawing skills were a little rusty, but my love for art hadn't faded one bit. During the day, I taught children how to draw at an art studio. At night, I drew whatever I saw, whether I was by the river, in the town square, or out in the fields. I was always meant to live that vibrant,

Third-Person POVAfter the call ended, Clara stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock. She always had a habit of saving recordings of her phone calls with Desmond. She never imagined I would find them one day.But Desmond didn't notice anything unusual about Clara. He reached out and tugged her arm, saying, "Clara, just stop working. Come help me pick out a few suits."With that, he reached out to take her phone from her, but she immediately stepped aside and brushed his hand off her arm. "Why don't you continue picking out a few suits yourself? I'll have my assistant stay here with you. Something just came up, so I need to fly back home now."Without waiting for his response, Clara turned and hurried off. The moment she got into her car, she immediately called Brandon, only to find his phone was switched off. She began sending him message after message. "Brandon, where are you?""Let's meet and talk things over, okay?""I can explain the recording."Even after Clara boarded t

Third-Person POVIn the afternoon, Clara's eyes kept twitching. She couldn't help but feel something was wrong. She glanced at her phone and realized Brandon hadn't even responded to her message. Clara immediately called the butler. "Ms. Vance, I thought Mr. Muhl was going on vacation with you."Clara was slightly confused. "What vacation? I don't know anything about that."Astonishment was written all over the butler's face. "After Mr. Muhl returned from the hospital this morning, he started packing his things. Before he left, he said he was going on vacation with you. Isn't he with you right now?"Clara's mouth fell slightly open, and she stood there in a daze for some time. A moment later, the confusion in her eyes suddenly gave way to joy, and she smiled. "I get it now. Brandon knows I'm abroad, so he plans to surprise me. Don't let him know that I'm aware of his plan. I have to act like I know nothing."After ending the call, her smile grew wider. When Desmond walked in
