Chapter 1

The smile on Colby Judd's face stiffened, and the entire room fell silent.

Macy Judd, my older biological sister, was the first to stand. Her gaze fell on my gaunt shoulders, and the sight seemed to sting her a little. Her brows immediately knitted together. She took off her jacket and tossed it at me.

"Don't be so indecent. At least put this on first."

I didn't put it on.

Her jacket was a light color, and I was pretty sweaty. If I got her jacket dirty, I'd be owing the family yet another article of clothing.

Frowning, Mom summoned the butler, Gabriel Abrams. "Bring Bryan a shirt."

Then, she took Colby's hand again, her tone carrying a hint of approval as she explained her reaction to me.

"Colby has always been too softhearted. He constantly gives in to other people and lets them have what they want. It's a good thing that he's finally standing up for what's his."

I glanced down at the shirt.

"So why was I wearing it then?" I asked.

Mom paused. "You didn't have anything appropriate, so I got it from Colby's closet."

"So you knew it belonged to him?"

"It's just a shirt! Why would I read so much into it?" Mom snapped.

"You didn't, but he certainly has," I pointed out.

Mom's expression turned a little cold. "Just what are you trying to say?"

"Nothing. I just want to make it clear that I wasn't the one who took the shirt."

Colby's eyes reddened. "I really don't blame you for it, Bryan. It was just an off-hand remark."

"And I've already returned the shirt, so why are you still on the verge of tears?"

Macy threw down her cutlery and snapped, "Colby has already apologized! What more do you want?"

"I'm not trying to do anything."

Standing half-naked beneath the chandelier, I looked at them with a solemn expression. "He's the one who asked whether I owed him, so I returned his shirt to him before asking him the same question. Is that not allowed?"

"You two were switched at birth! It's not like Colby deliberately stole your place in the family!" Macy fired at me.

"And I didn't take his clothes on purpose either."

That shut her up, but Mom immediately wrapped her arms around Colby and said to me, "Bryan, we didn't bring you back to the family so that you can settle scores with Colby. He's been a part of the family for 22 years now. Even though we're not related by blood, he's still our son."

"And what about me?" I asked before regretting it.

It sounded far too much like I was demanding something from them.

However, Mom didn't take it that way. She simply rubbed her forehead and said, "You're our son too, of course. But you must realize there's an order to things. You can't force the family to prove who we love more the moment you show up."

So even I, her biological son, had to take a number and wait my turn behind the son she raised.

I nodded and stopped asking questions.

Gabriel returned with a large white shirt. It was a flimsy material, and the shoulder seams hung way past my shoulders. Even after I buttoned it up, it hung loosely on my frame.

The dinner continued.

No one bothered offering me any food, but they took turns loading up Colby's plate for him. Macy cut up some steak for him, and Dad asked him if he'd been sleeping well lately. Mom addressed the other relatives, telling them that I was just too blunt by nature and that they shouldn't care about what I said.

Not a single person checked in with me to find out more about my life at the orphanage.

After dinner, we took a family photo. The photographer asked me to stand between my parents. Colby had just taken a step to the side when Mom instinctively reached out to stop him.

"Colby, stand next to me. Bryan, stand next to your father."

Macy took her place next to Colby without even thinking.

When the shutter clicked, I looked at my reflection in the lens.

It was supposed to be a celebration of my reunion with my biological family, yet I was wearing an oversized shirt someone had hastily found for me, looking like a guest who'd been squeezed into the picture at the last minute.

In the preview, I saw Mom's hand resting on Colby's shoulder. Meanwhile, the gap between Dad and me was wide enough to fit another person.

On the way home, Dad finally said, "We turned down two dinner invitations today just to bring you home. Your mother has spent years running around looking for you, too. How can you repay us by causing a scene like that on your very first day with us?"

I got the hint. The fact that they came looking for me meant I owed them.

I got my phone out and tapped on the notes app. "How much did it cost to find me?"

Dad's expression darkened. "What do you mean by that?"

"Nothing." I created a new line on my expense ledger. "I'll repay the money you spent on me. That way, no matter what I do after that, I won't have to feel like I owe anyone."

At 9:00 am on the first day of the 17th month, Franklin's phone buzzed. The final 10,000 dollars had been transferred. The remark no longer listed the remaining balance.Instead, it read, "Payment made in full. Thank you for looking for me."What a polite message it was—so polite that it sounded like a stranger they'd helped at random. The family group chat remained quiet all morning. Tammy was the first to break the silence."Is Bryan really never coming back?"No one answered her. That afternoon, Franklin told the driver to get the car ready. All four of them came up to Northshore. When they arrived at the campus, Tammy told the visitor desk that she was my mother. After checking the records, the staff member shook his head and said, "Mr. Judd hasn't listed you as a family contact. His emergency contact is Professor Lakewood. We need his confirmation before we can let you in."Tammy clutched her ID card, unable to speak. She was the woman who had given birth to me, yet she ne

During the sixth month, Tammy went to the orphanage without telling me about it. I only found out when Ms. Nelson mentioned it during one of our calls.Tammy had brought a lot of gifts and even prepared to donate a new building to the orphanage. She had visited the room where I'd lived as a child. Eight small beds had been crammed together. Instead of a name, the beds were labeled with a number.Ms. Nelson told her that when I was seven years old, after I finished investigating the meat, the first thing I did wasn't to claim credit. Instead, I made sure the kids got all the meat that was supposed to be set aside for them.I didn't take even a single extra piece for myself.Ms. Nelson didn't accept the donation right away. "As a child, what Bryan feared the most was someone giving him something and then telling him that he had to obey them."Tammy's face paled.Ms. Nelson showed her the notebook I used back then, where I recorded how much meat the kids ate every day. On the very l

During the fourth month, Tammy had someone go through the footage taken at the family dinner to welcome me home. She wanted to pick a family portrait to have printed and hung up in the living room.Gabriel stared at the shirt in the footage, looking as though he wanted to say something but couldn't bring himself to."Mrs. Judd, there's something I've been hesitant to tell you."I later learned that before the family dinner, Colby had personally handed the shirt to a maid. He said that since I'd only just returned and didn't have a proper formal outfit, I could wear his shirt. The maid thought it was a very generous gesture and made a point of telling Tammy about it.But at the dinner table, he'd asked me in front of everyone whether I owed him for borrowing his shirt.Tammy hadn't taken the shirt for me. He'd deliberately had it handed to me and waited for me to put it on.After hearing that, Tammy rewound the footage and watched it again. When I took off the suit and shirt, ever

The second month, I made the transfer at exactly 9:00 am again. Franklin didn't reply. The third month was the same. I assumed they had gotten used to it.Then, my old college sent some mail to the Judd residence. It was a parcel with my certificate of academic excellence for being valedictorian, a commemorative plaque, and photos from the graduation ceremony.Macy asked me why I hadn't told them the school named me valedictorian."I sent it in the group chat," I replied."What group chat?""The family group chat."Macy went quiet for a while. The family group chat had been flooded with messages that day. Tammy had been busy choosing Colby's outfit for the competition. Franklin had been preoccupied with making arrangements, including instructing the driver to secure a parking lot ahead of time. Macy herself kept sending encouraging messages to cheer Colby on.My messages had been drowned out among theirs, and not one person had responded to me.Tammy scrolled up for a lo

It had been a month since I left, and not a single one of the Judds contacted me again. That wasn't surprising. They were waiting for me to be the one who caved and came crawling back to them.In reality, I was too busy to even think about them. The research project had just launched, and the lights in the lab stayed on late into the night every day. After Professor Lakewood noticed that I kept forgetting to eat, he simply handed my meal card to Shawn."Keep an eye on him. If he skips a meal, I'll deduct your stipend."Shawn immediately added me to a group chat where the research team discussed what to eat every day. The pinned announcement read, "Bryan doesn't eat celery and doesn't like anything too sweet."I read it twice. It didn't take knowing something for 22 years to remember what their preferences were after all. Just a casual question over a meal sufficed.Shawn sent a message."The newcomers are usually too embarrassed to speak up, so I'd rather make it clear upfront. T

Two hours later, I arrived in Northshore. The person waiting to greet me was Shawn Cassidy, another one of Professor Lakewood's students. He was taken aback to see that all I had was a backpack."Is that all the luggage you brought?""It's enough."He didn't press any further. Holding my backpack for me, he took me to the office to complete my admission paperwork. The dorm was a double room, and the bed by the window already had my name on it. My name was also on the lab access card, desk nameplate, and project roster.Shawn handed me the key, saying, "Professor Lakewood was worried you wouldn't be able to find your way around on your first visit, so he had me get everything ready in advance. The left side of the desk is yours, and the cabinet is empty, too. Put your things wherever you like."For the first time, someone had reserved a place for me without asking whether I planned to stay for long. That afternoon, Professor Lakewood introduced me to the project team."This is
