Chapter 3

Author: Verdant Tea
The sky gradually brightened, and the rain finally began to ease.

The water level started to recede slowly.

More and more survivors arrived at the shelter, filling it with cries of relief and grief.

Gavin hadn’t slept all night, and dark stubble covered his chin.

He was arranging the day’s rescue operations.

“Today’s priorities are pumping out the water and clearing the mud.”

He pointed to several locations on the map.

“Send both high-powered pumps to Building Five first.”

Jack voiced an objection.

“Mr. Cooper, Building Five is on higher ground, so the flooding isn’t serious there.”

“Building Three is in the lowest area, and the first floor is still underwater. We should pump the water out of Building Three first.”

Gavin didn’t even look up as he refuted him.

“Building Five may be on higher ground, but important community records are stored in its basement.

“Wendy also has many belongings left by her late husband in her home. If they’re ruined by the flood, it would be devastating for her.

“Building Three only has old furniture. If it gets damaged, we can apply for some government assistance later.”

Jack’s eyes widened as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“But your wife and Teddy are still in Building Three! What if they didn’t make it upstairs and are still trapped on the first floor?”

Gavin’s face turned ice-cold.

“Jack, are you telling me how to do my job? I told you Luna wouldn’t be that stupid. She knows how to stay safe. Going to Building Three now would be a waste of public resources.

“I’m in charge here. If anything happens, I’ll take responsibility. Do as I say!”

Jack gritted his teeth and turned away to carry out the orders.

I watched Gavin’s self-righteous profile and found it almost laughable.

He was always like this, using the most noble-sounding excuses to justify the most blatant favoritism.

Community records?

Personal belongings?

To Gavin, even a single photo album belonging to Wendy’s late husband mattered more than the lives of Teddy and me.

Teddy leaned against my leg, no longer crying.

He stared quietly at Gavin as the love and admiration he had once felt for his father slowly faded away.

“Mom, Dad said we were wasting resources.”

Teddy’s voice was barely a whisper.

“If I’m not worth saving, does that mean I’m trash?”

My chest tightened, and I crouched down to pull him into my arms.

“You’re Mommy’s precious boy—the most precious boy in the world. Your dad is blind. We don’t need him anymore.”

Teddy nodded obediently.

“Okay. I only need Mommy.”

By noon, most of the water had been pumped out of Building Five.

Wendy followed Gavin into the basement with her daughter.

She rummaged through a cardboard box and pulled out a photo album.

“Thank goodness. The pictures weren’t damaged.”

Tears of joy filled Wendy’s eyes as she hugged the album tightly.

Gavin stood beside her and let out a long sigh of relief.

“Thank goodness. I knew pumping out the water here first was the right decision.”

He took out his phone and glanced at the screen.

There were still no missed calls from me.

Gavin snorted and slipped the phone back into his pocket.

“Luna has gone too far this time. She couldn’t even send me a message to let me know she was safe. Once I’m done with all this, I’m going to make her write a formal apology.”

Wendy wiped away her tears and gently tried to placate him.

“Gavin, don’t be angry with Luna. She may simply be terrified. When you go home, make sure you comfort her.”

“Why should I comfort her?”

Gavin frowned.

“She’s spoiled because I’ve indulged her for too long. The slightest problem sends her into a tantrum. This time, I’m not going to be the one to apologize first. She needs to realize what she did wrong.”

I stood behind them and watched Gavin’s confident expression.

He was certain I was still huddled in the second-floor stairwell, trembling as I held our son.

He was certain that all it would take was a crook of his finger, and I would obediently come running home.

Unfortunately, he didn’t know the truth.

He had personally locked the first-floor security door from the outside.

He said that we needed to be extra careful during a hurricane to prevent break-ins.

When the floodwaters surged inside, the pressure was so powerful that I couldn’t open the door.

The white light grew brighter, gradually enveloping Teddy and me.Gavin seemed to sense something and suddenly looked up toward the glow. His eyes were bloodshot from going without sleep for so long.“Luna? Teddy?”He reached out and stumbled toward the light.“Have you come back?”“Don’t go… Please, don’t go…”He lunged at the glow but caught only a handful of cold air.He crashed to the floor, his chin striking the hard tiles and drawing blood. But he didn’t seem to feel the pain. He crawled forward on his hands and knees.“I’ll take you to the hospital. I’ll buy Teddy the best fever medicine there is.“I’ll never put the greater good before you again. I only want you…”I stood within the light and looked down at him.It was the first time in my life I had ever seen Gavin in such a wretched state. There was no trace of his usual condescending lectures. He was simply a pathetic man who had lost everything.“Gavin.”I spoke to him gently. It was the first time I had spoken to him since

Night fell, and with the power still out in Building Three, the apartment was shrouded in darkness and silence.Gavin lit a candle and placed it on the dining table. After changing into clean clothes, he sat in the chair across from me.Two place settings sat on the table beside the half-eaten bowl of spaghetti, which was water‑logged.“Luna, dinner’s ready.”Gavin picked up his spoon and forced down a mouthful of the cold, water‑logged spaghetti.“You always used to complain that I was too busy with work to eat with you and Teddy.“From now on, I’ll eat with you every day. Would that make you happy?”As he ate, fat tears fell into his bowl one after another.Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.Jack stood outside, holding a document.“Mr. Cooper… Investigators from the county inspector general’s office are here.”Jack’s voice was filled with reluctance.“They’re investigating your improper allocation of emergency resources during the rescue, which resulted in your wife and son’s dea

Outside the basement of Building Five, Wendy was directing several volunteers as they carried her belongings out.“Be careful with that box. It’s full of my daughter’s clothes.”“Don’t touch that cabinet. You couldn’t afford to replace it if you damaged it.”She had returned to her usual sweet yet haughty manner. Then she turned around and saw Gavin, covered in mud.“Gavin?”Wendy froze for a moment before putting on a sorrowful expression and hurrying toward him.“Why aren’t you staying with Luna a little longer to say goodbye?”“I can handle things here.”Gavin stopped three paces away and looked at her in silence.“You’ve already moved out your photo album and your daughter’s clothes?”“Yes. Thanks to the pumps you sent over, none of them were damaged.”Wendy failed to notice the strange tone in his voice and smiled smugly.Gavin nodded, his eyes falling on her spotless rubber boots.“Did your daughter have an asthma attack?”The smile on Wendy’s face stiffened.“No… She didn’t. She

Gavin’s breakdown didn’t last long.Or rather, he forced it down with an almost pathological sense of control. He rose to his feet and gave Jack his instructions.“Call the funeral home and have them send someone to pick them up.”His voice had regained its usual calm, but his eyes were dull and lifeless.“Tell the neighborhood crews to continue clearing the mud in Building Three. Don’t let this delay the work.”Jack stared at him in shock.“Sir, your wife and Teddy are both… and you still want them to continue clearing the mud?”Gavin didn’t answer. He simply picked up a rag and began wiping the mud from my face. His movements were gentle. The rain had stopped completely, and sunlight streamed through the shattered window. The neighbors gradually returned to the complex. When they saw medical workers carrying two body bags out of the first floor, the crowd erupted.“Isn’t that Mr. Cooper’s wife and son?”“How did they drown in their own home?”“Wasn’t Mr. Cooper in charge of the rescu

Just then, Wendy’s voice came from outside the door.“Gavin, are you in there?”Wendy wore rubber boots as she cautiously stepped inside. When she saw what had happened, she let out a terrified scream and covered her mouth.“Oh my God… How could Luna and Teddy…?”She walked over to Gavin and tried to pull him to his feet.“Gavin, don’t do this. The dead can’t be brought back. Luna was simply unlucky. You need to take care of yourself.”Gavin slowly turned his head and looked at Wendy. The warmth that had always been in his eyes was gone, replaced by icy coldness.“Unlucky?”He slowly repeated the word, his voice quiet.Frightened by his expression, Wendy took a step back.“Gavin, don’t scare me… Luna couldn’t save herself. It was an accident…”Gavin slowly rose from the ground, muddy water dripping from his pant legs.He ignored Wendy and turned toward the security door he had personally locked from the outside. The inside of the doorframe was covered in tightly packed scratch marks I

Gavin’s eyes widened sharply, and he stood frozen.I was wearing the old pajamas he hated, my arms wrapped tightly around Teddy to protect him.Teddy’s cheeks had turned bluish-purple, and his little hands were still clutching my clothes. Our clothes were caked with mud, and our bodies had grown pale and swollen from being submerged in the water.Gavin’s Adam’s apple bobbed as a strange, strangled sound escaped him.He didn’t scream or rush toward us.He simply stood there, staring at us with an eerily blank expression.“Luna, stop this.”His voice was soft, trembling faintly.“This isn’t funny.”He slowly walked toward us, each step seeming unbearably heavy.Water splashed against his pant legs, but he didn’t seem to notice. He crouched in front of us and reached out to touch my face.“Do you think smearing mud on your face will make me go easy on you?”His hand stopped in midair, his fingertips trembling slightly. He froze when he saw the deep gash across my neck, carved by a piece o
