Chapter 7

Author: Bacon River
After that birthday, something in Alban shifted. He still spent most of his time with Davina, yet he began coming home almost every day. Even when they exchanged only a few words, he made a point of standing where Eliza could see him, as though to assert his presence.

One afternoon, after Alban left, Eliza glanced through the documents he had brought home.

An auction catalog lay among them. She flipped through it without much interest, then stopped short. A crystal sphere appeared among the featured lots.

Her breath caught.

Kyran had once planned to make that crystal sphere for her. He had set gems inside it and engraved their initials on them. He had intended it as a gift and had never mentioned it to anyone.

She had no idea how it had found its way to an auction house. Because he had made it for her, he had kept it private. No one else knew where it came from.

As she stared at the photograph in the catalog, her vision blurred. She knew she had to have it.

….

Eliza changed her clothes and hurried to the auction house.

When she arrived, she saw that Alban and Davina were already there.

Surprise crossed Alban's face when he noticed her. Before anyone spoke, the auction began.

After they took their seats, Davina leaned against Alban's shoulder with easy familiarity, as if she were his rightful wife.

Concerned she might be cold, Alban removed his jacket and draped it over her shoulders. "Don't catch a cold."

She allowed him to fuss over her and replied sweetly, "Al, you promised me. Today, whatever I want, you'll bid on it for me."

His voice remained low and steady. "When have I ever broken a promise to you?"

Davina smiled, satisfied.

Eliza ignored their closeness. She kept her eyes fixed on the stage and waited for the item that mattered to her.

At last, the crystal sphere appeared.

The starting bid was 200,000 dollars.

Eliza raised her paddle without hesitation. "400,000."

Her intent was clear.

The starting price was reasonable. Her bid already stretched the limit. Few bidders would go higher.

She had not expected Davina to want it as well.

"Al, I like that crystal ball too," Davina said lightly.

Alban lifted his paddle at once. "600,000."

Eliza's heart lurched. She knew she could not compete with him financially, yet she raised her paddle again.

"800,000."

Neither side retreated. The price climbed without pause.

1,000,000… 1,400,000… 1,800,000…

When it reached 2,000,000, Eliza knew she had reached her limit. She did not have the funds to continue. If the bidding went any higher, she would lose.

Yet the crystal sphere meant too much to surrender without trying. For the first time, she softened her voice and looked at Alban with restrained pleading.

"Can you let me have this one?" she asked quietly. "I really like it."

She had never asked him for anything like this.

Hesitation flickered in Alban's eyes.

Then Davina spoke.

"But I really like it too," she said gently. "If I don't get it, I'll be upset."

The warmth in his gaze disappeared.

Alban's expression hardened. He raised his paddle again and signaled a full override. No matter how high the bidding rose, he would exceed it until the item was his.

At that moment, Eliza understood that she had already lost.

The pain that had torn through him ebbed, replaced by a strange, buoyant weightlessness, as if he were sinking into a whirlpool. He could not open his eyes. The world dissolved into flickering patches of black and white.Through the haze, he thought he saw Eliza walking toward him. She wore the dress from the day they first met. Calm and resolute, she asked whether he wanted to go home together. He tried to reach for her hand and failed. Not because she pulled away, but because he no longer had the strength to move.Cold closed around him. Warmth seeped from his skin. A single tear slid from the corner of his eye.…Eliza learned of Alban's death half a month later. She was shopping

"Alban, your father already knows about your overseas trip. You need to come back immediately." Urgency tightened the voice on the other end of the line.Alban remained silent."Alban? Did you hear me? Your father knows about Davina too. He's furious and demands an explanation."At the mention of Davina, Alban's hand clenched at his side. "I'll be back right away."…When his plane landed in Avalion City, Alban did not go home. He ordered someone to bring Davina to him instead."Alban, your father is applying serious pressure," one of his friends said cautiously. "Maybe you should return first—""Are you making decisions for me now?" Alban cut in, his voice cold."No, no," the man replied quickly, retreating at once.No one else dared to speak. When Davina entered and saw Alban sitting alone with a drink in his hand, she flinched. She stumbled back, her voice trembling. "You! What are you doing here? Are you trying to kill me?"She had grown so thin that her cheeks looked ho

The moment the words left her mouth, Alban's composure collapsed. Tears spilled down his face, unchecked. He looked at her like an abandoned dog, pitiful and desperate, begging its owner for mercy. When he spoke again, his voice broke. "Eliza, you approached me because of Kyran. And now you can throw me away without hesitation? You even decided something as serious as divorce on your own?"I never knew about that divorce agreement from beginning to end. It doesn't count."When it comes to feelings between two people, how can you come and go as you please, without a second thought? How is that fair to me?"Tears streamed down his face as the words tumbled out.Eliza watched him without interruption, her expression cold. When she spoke, her tone was calm and steady. "When you agreed to marry me, did you truly have no selfish motives? Or are you saying you married me out of love?"After we married, did you ever really see me as your wife? If you did, think carefully about everythi

After hearing her story, Otto felt a sharp jolt of shock. Yet, at the same time, everything fell into a strange, undeniable logic.Eliza had always been fiercely independent. The fact that she had endured all of it and still stood steady, still carried herself with quiet light, spoke to the core of her strength."Do you think my decision was reckless?" she asked."No," he replied without hesitation. "You are yourself first. Only after that are you the child's mother. Seen that way, it isn't reckless at all."His answer was earnest and measured. It allowed Eliza to see him more clearly. When they stepped out of the car, Otto retrieved the thermal container and placed it in her hands. "Take this home. Drink it while it's still warm."She accepted it without protest. "Thank you."As she watched his car disappear down the road, she realized the tight knot of anxiety in her chest had begun to loosen. She turned toward the house and found Alban standing at the gate. The smile on her

The other party’s voice cut through the quiet street.Eliza turned and saw Otto standing across from her, holding a thermal container."Mr. Townsend? What are you doing here?" she asked."I noticed you took the day off," he said. "So I came by to check on you."His home was near the company. The villa district where Eliza lived lay well out of his way. Nothing about this route was convenient. The explanation felt sincere, if slightly awkward.Since Eliza had mentioned her pregnancy, Otto had grown unexpectedly nervous around her. He admired her courage and, at the same time, felt a quiet ache for her. The emotions tangled together in ways he could not fully untangle. The concern on his face warmed her."You came at the perfect time," she said. "I was about to go to the hospital, but I couldn't get a cab. Could you give me a ride?""Of course. Let's go now." Urgency edged his voice. "Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?"He heard the anxiety in his tone and quickly tried to

"What?!" Jessica's voice rose with unmistakable shock. "Lizzy, you told Otto you're pregnant? And he even took you to your prenatal checkup?""Yeah," Eliza said, unfazed. "Everyone was going to find out sooner or later. Telling him early didn't make much difference."Eliza's indifference drew a sigh from Jessica. "Honestly, Lizzy, after all these years, you really haven't changed. Otto's usually cold and standoffish, like no one's allowed near him."She paused, then continued, "But the moment you showed up, he turned into a peacock, strutting around and showing off. Don't tell me you haven't noticed."The comparison made Eliza laugh. "You're exaggerating. Jessica, you really have a talent for metaphors.""I can't help being observant," Jessica replied smugly. Her tone soon turned serious. "But really, you could consider him. I can vouch for his character. He's nothing like Alban."At the mention of Alban's name, Eliza's expression darkened. She thought of his recent call, and un
