Serena Laurent had been waiting for this moment for so long that she had stopped letting herself think about it directly.

But now she could. Now it was allowed.

She sat curled up on her sofa the night after the family dinner. A wine glass rested on the arm of the couch. She scrolled through her phone with a soft, glowing happiness she had not allowed herself to feel in years.

It was really over.

Kael had said the words himself, out loud, at his family’s table. It's finalized.

Five years of waiting, five years of being the woman on the side, five years of smiling through holidays where she was not allowed to sit next to him. And now it was finally over.

She let herself think about the wedding dress first.

Something simple and elegant, not the kind of dress a woman wore when she was trying to prove something. Serena would not need to prove anything anymore, not once there was a ring on her hand and her name next to his in the papers.

Ivory, maybe, or the softest pale blue. Something that would look beautiful in photos against the gardens at the Sterling estate.

Of course that was where they would have the wedding. Where else would a Sterling wedding take place?

She thought about the venue next, letting the pictures drift pleasantly through her mind. Early autumn, maybe, when the light turned soft and golden over the lawn. Three hundred guests, easily, given who Kael’s family knew.

She could already picture herself walking down the aisle while people who had once treated her like a secret finally had to treat her like the future Mrs. Sterling.

She had waited five years for this. She could wait a few more months to plan it properly.

The next afternoon, Kael came by her apartment after a long day at the office. His tie was loosened and he looked distracted. Serena told herself it was just work stress.

She decided there was no reason to wait any longer.

“I’ve been thinking,” she said, curling into the corner of the sofa beside him. Her voice was light and easy, the way she had practiced it. “Now that everything is finalized… maybe we should start talking about dates. Nothing has to be decided tonight. I just think it would be nice to have something on the calendar. Something to look forward to.”

Kael was quiet for a second too long.

“Let’s not rush it,” he said. He used almost the same words he had told her in the hallway two nights before. Hearing the same answer again made her stomach tighten a little, even before he finished speaking.

“I need a little time to breathe. After everything with the divorce. It’s been a lot, Serena, the family, the board, all of it.”

“Of course,” she said right away. That was what she always said, that was the role she had learned to play so well over the years: understanding, patient, never pushing.

But something inside her: quiet, small, and new, did not fully believe the performance this time, not even from herself.

He left a little while later. He kissed her forehead and told her he would call her tomorrow. Serena stood at the window and watched his car pull away from the curb. The warm happiness from the night before started to cool into something else entirely.

Time to breathe.

She repeated the words in her mind as she stood alone in her apartment. The wine glass sat forgotten on the counter behind her.

Breathe from what, exactly?

The divorce was finished. Elara was gone, out of the house, out of his life, completely out of the picture. Or so Serena had believed with full confidence until about thirty seconds ago.

There was nothing left to need space from. No remaining problem, no unfinished business.

Unless, a small and unwelcome voice in the back of her mind suggested, the real problem was not the end of the marriage at all. Unless it was something else entirely that he needed space from.

She pushed the thought away almost as quickly as it came. She was being paranoid. Five years of being the other woman had left her with a low, constant anxiety. She recognized it now as an old habit, a leftover scar from years of being second.

There was no reason for it anymore. She had won. She just needed to remind herself of that, she needed to let the victory settle in properly instead of picking at it like a wound that had already healed.

She poured herself another glass of wine and sat back down at the kitchen table. She pulled her laptop toward her, telling herself she would look at venue websites and try to get some of that pleasant excitement back before bed.

Instead, without really meaning to, her fingers typed a different name into the search bar. Elara’s name popped up, just out of idle curiosity.

A business article appeared near the top of the results. It had been published that same week. It was one of those industry lists about new companies to watch in the coming year.

Serena almost scrolled past it. Almost.

Then she saw one line buried in the third paragraph:

Among the founders drawing early attention is E. Vale, formerly of the Sterling family, whose new venture has quietly attracted interest from several established investors.

Serena sat very still. The soft glow of the laptop was the only light in the room. A cold, unfamiliar feeling settled low in her stomach. She did not have a name for it yet, but she would come to know that feeling very well in the months ahead.

Kael sat at his desk late one evening, reviewing the contracts spread out before him. He was comfortable with the familiar routine of working in the quiet of their shared home office. He heard the door open behind him and footsteps approaching. He recognized Elara’s presence immediately, even before turning around."Still working?" she asked warmly, without the distance she had once kept between them."Just finishing up," Kael said, setting down his pen, and turning to look at her properly.Elara stood in the doorway for a moment. As he looked at her, the scene suddenly reminded him of another evening years ago, in a different house. She had stood in a similar doorway then and calmly told him she wanted a divorce. He thought back to that evening, remembering how he'd also set down his pen, the careful distance between them, and how he had failed to truly understand what she was telling him until she slid that folder across his desk. This moment carried none of that earlier devastatin

Elara woke to the smell of fresh coffee coming from the kitchen. Morning light shone softly through the curtains she had chosen herself when they moved into their new home. Nothing about this house reminded her of the cold, formal elegance of the original Sterling residence. She found Kael in the kitchen, still in his sleep clothes, with two mugs of coffee waiting on the counter. He had prepared hers with a little cream, just the way she liked it on difficult mornings, while his was plain."Good morning," he said, glancing up from the newspaper he was reading, offering her an easy smile."Morning," she said, settling onto the stool beside the counter, and taking her coffee with a grateful smile. There was nothing unusual about this morning. It was simply another peaceful moment in their daily life together, a comfortable routine they had built over time. It was entirely different from the formal distance and careful behaviour that had defined their first marriage.Sitting with her cof

The garden was quiet and intimate, very different from the grand venue where Elara had married Kael the first time. Three hundred guests and a string quartet were part of that wedding, but the occasion had felt more like an obligation than a celebration of genuine love. This time, only thirty guests sat beneath a simple canopy decorated with string lights. Elara had chosen each person carefully because they had all played an important part in her difficult journey. Priya and Tomas sat near the front. After spending the past year building Vale Capital together, they had become like family to her. Daniel stood nearby, ready to walk her down the short aisle. He was the mentor who had believed in her long before she learned to believe in herself.Marcus sat quietly among the guests, with Sarah beside him. Their relationship had grown over the past few months, and she felt grateful to see him there. Despite everything that had once happened between them. He remained her friend, showing a l

Elara sat quietly, absorbing the full meaning of Kael’s offer and feeling deeply touched by the fact that he finally understood her for who she truly was.In that long, important moment, she thought about all the different versions of Kael she had come to know throughout their difficult journey. First, there was the cold man who had entered an arranged marriage with her and carefully explained the terms before their wedding. Then came the husband who was rarely present, whose neglect had slowly made her feel as though she no longer mattered. After that came the regretful ex-husband who had desperately tried to prove he had changed through grand gestures and dramatic displays. And now, sitting before her, was a different man, someone who had worked hard to change over many months and was finally showing her that he understood her, without putting on a show or expecting a particular outcome. As she honestly examined her feelings in that moment, she understood exactly what she wanted her

  • I Own Twenty Percent of My Ex Husband’s Company   Chapter 156 — The Proposal

Kael spent weeks getting ready, but this time he approached it differently than he would have in the past. He wasn't planning an expensive venue or a grand public display meant to prove everything in one dramatic moment.Instead, he spent time with Dr. Patel, working through what he truly wanted to say. He understood that this moment needed words that carried real meaning, supported by the consistent actions he had taken over time, not words meant only to impress."I think I'm ready," he told her during one of their final sessions before he planned to propose. "Not because I have a perfect plan, but because I finally understand what I need to say and why it matters.""What do you need to say?" Dr. Patel asked.Kael took a moment to think. "Everything I've truly learned," he replied. "Not the usual promises about loving her forever. I want to acknowledge who she really is and show her that I finally see her clearly, after years of not giving her the attention she deserved."For several

  • I Own Twenty Percent of My Ex Husband’s Company   Chapter 155 — The Real Partnership

Finalizing the formal partnership agreement between Sterling Group and Vale Capital took several weeks of careful, and detailed negotiation. Both legal teams worked through the terms to make sure the agreement reflected the mutual, equal partnership Kael and Elara had deliberately built in their personal relationship.“I want to review this final section once more,” Kael said during one of their last negotiation meetings. He looked over the governance structure they had developed together. “The oversight committee must have equal representation from both firms. I mean truly equal, not based on how much capital each firm contributes.”“I agree,” Elara said, carefully reading through the wording beside him. “I think this reflects exactly what we discussed. Both firms should have an equal voice, regardless of which one contributes more money to a particular venture.”They carefully reviewed the remaining details, both aware of the importance of what they were building. This was not just
