Chapter 4

Author: Good luck
I found the husky at an abandoned veterinary clinic on the east side of town.

I'd never been to that district. It was too far away, and the round trip meant crossing three zombie-infested zones. But that day, for whatever reason, my feet carried me there anyway.

The clinic was half collapsed, its sign hanging crooked, covered in bullet holes and claw marks from zombies.

I searched for a long time and found a husky under a fallen cage.

He was so thin that every rib showed, his coat matted into clumps. Yet when he saw me, he actually wagged his tail.

He wagged so hard his whole back end swung with it.

I crouched to look at him and he licked my hand.

"Were you left behind too?" He tilted his head and licked me again.

I broke off the last ration bar in my pack for him. He swallowed it in two gulps, then got up and limped after me. For three hours, through three zombie zones, he followed me all the way back to the base.

The administrator saw me again.

This time there was a grubby husky behind me, limping, wagging, unapologetically scruffy-looking.

"You picked up another dog?" The administrator's mouth twitched.

I didn't answer. I bent down, picked the husky up, and headed for my cubicle.

He weighed almost nothing in my arms. His tail never stopped wagging, and the tip brushed my chin, tickling me.

It struck me suddenly that I hadn't felt this in a long time.

The new dog had a name. Doofus.

It wasn't that I had a wild imagination. The dog just fit the image too perfectly, with a face that screamed, "I'm going to wreck this place any second now," even though he didn't have the strength to do any real damage.

Doofus healed quickly, far faster than a certain wolf who'd mooched ration bars off me for two full weeks before recovering.

He was back on his feet by the third day, brave enough to attack my shoes by the fifth, and by the seventh he had learned to sit outside the mess hall and stare at everyone in the food line with watery blue eyes until they relented and gave him a piece of a dinner roll.

"That dog of yours is adorable," said the woman who lived next door.

"Mm." I took a bite of my ration bar. "At least he knows how to charm people."

Unlike certain wolves, who did nothing but glare and snarl at me and wouldn't even wag a tail properly.

That night, Doofus sat beside the bed with my shoe in his mouth while I stared at the crack in the ceiling. A question occurred to me: why did I keep comparing Doofus to that wolf?

Was it because Doofus had come to me after he left? Or had I been looking for a point of comparison, something to prove that those two weeks hadn't been a hallucination?

In the fourth year of the apocalypse, the base and the werewolf pack signed a formal coexistence agreement. After the signing, Silas came to find me, dragged me from the mess hall up onto the wall, and said he had something important. The wall was high enough to see for miles. The wind whipped my hair across my face. Doofus sat beside me, trying to help by licking my hair, and Silas brushed him aside. "I have an announcement," he said solemnly.I looked at him.Doofus looked at him.Everyone in the base was busy below the wall. Nobody looked over."I, Silas Vale, heir to the Silver Wolf pack, hereby apply to become Quinn Mercer's lifelong mate." He held up a grubby booklet he had clearly sewn himself. "These are my application materials."I took it and flipped through. A few crooked lines filled the pages, the handwriting looking like trails left by centipedes. The gist was: My name is Silas Vale. I'm twenty-five. I can fight and warm a bed. I can't cook, but I can learn. I own propert

I closed my eyes and pressed one hand to the ground. In the three years since the apocalypse began, I had never truly used my ability. My ability wasn't "affinity." It was "control."I could hear the heartbeat of every mutated creature.I could command them. I'd never done it because I was afraid of becoming one of them.I wasn't afraid anymore.I wanted them dead.My consciousness burst outward and touched the nerve endings of every zombie there.A bone-chilling cold washed over me, seeping deep into my marrow. I heard my own voice force its way out, a verdict from the abyss: "Stop."Every zombie in the square stopped. And then they turned and threw themselves at each other.Silas was badly hurt. His hind leg was broken, three ribs were fractured, and he had more wounds than I could count. But when I lifted him, he still found the strength to nuzzle my face."You came back," he murmured, so faint it was barely audible."Obviously.""You used your ability.""Mm.""I was afraid you'd lo

Silas's rut came two days earlier than he'd expected. When I woke at dawn, he was curled into a ball in the corner of the bed, the blanket shoved entirely onto my side and his tail wrapped tightly around his legs.He had shifted to wolf form, his body shaking, his breath hot and fast, as though he were burning."Silas?""Don't come near," he forced out between his fangs, so hoarse it barely counted as speech. "I can't control it... I'll hurt you.""You can't hurt me.""Quinn..."I threw off the blanket, went over, and gathered his head into my arms. He struggled once, far too weakly, and I hardly needed any strength at all. My fingers went through the fur at the back of his neck and pressed against his burning skin."I'm here," I said.He let out the faintest whimper, like someone finally surrendering after holding out too long. His whole body relaxed. He nuzzled against me, then went still."Your scent..." he murmured, his voice thick and drowsy. "I missed you so much.""I'm right her

Silas said he wanted to take me somewhere. He shifted to wolf form, lowered his body, and looked back at me. His gray eyes held something I couldn't quite read: anticipation, nerves, and something deeper. Doofus tried to follow, but his tail blocked his path, and he barked in frustration."He can't come?" I asked."Next time. This time it's just us."I climbed onto his back and took hold of the fur at his neck. He rose and ran, a streak of silver-gray through the ruins. The wind roared past my ears, and the smell of rot that hung over the apocalypse was left behind. He ran at full sprint without jostling me once. Pressed to his back and feeling the rhythm of his muscles, I suddenly remembered the first time I'd seen him. He'd had rebar through his hind leg then, blood all over the ground, and the way he looked at me was vicious and desperate.Who could have guessed that what I found wasn't a dog, but my whole future laid out before me?He took me to a high ridge. From there, we could s

Silas said his rut was coming. He said it as casually as if he were reminding me that rain was forecast and I should take an umbrella. The ration bar slipped from my hand. Doofus snatched it out of the air and ran to the corner."What did you say?""My rut," he repeated. "It happens once a year and lasts about a month. During it, I need my mate's scent to calm me. Otherwise, the rut can be unbearable.""Didn't you say your pack business was handled?""It's handled.""Then you should go back to your packmates—""Only a mate's scent works," he cut me off. "Not another werewolf, not family, not any drug."He looked at me. There was none of the damp shine he used when coaxing me, none of the wounded redness he used to win sympathy, only quiet certainty. As though waiting for me to choose."Quinn," he said, using my name. "I left last time because I didn't want to drag you into it. My troubles are dealt with now. I won't leave again.""And so?""And so, could you..."He stopped. It was the

Doofus and Silas finally came to blows.More accurately, Doofus declared war on Silas, Silas flattened him, and then I punished Silas. Every part of the fight was one-sided.The cause was a strip of dried meat.I gave one to Doofus and not to Silas. It wasn't favoritism. Silas didn't eat dog treats. The last time I put one in his mouth, he chewed twice, swallowed, then frowned. "Too bland. Not enough chewiness. Don't give me junk like this again." I'd said, "Fine. I won't."So that day, I really didn't give him one.And he got angry. Not because I'd withheld a treat from him, but because I'd given one to Doofus."You gave that stupid dog a treat." He sat on the bed with his arms folded, glowering."You said last time you didn't want it.""And you took me at my word?""...What else?"He choked on that. His lips moved as he tried and failed to find a comeback. Then he turned and fixed his gaze on the piece of dried meat still in Doofus's mouth."If you dare take the dog's food I'm throwi
