Chapter 1

Kim Slater's POV

I received a call from the hospital. "Mrs. Granger, your mother is in critical condition and needs immediate surgery. Please come to the hospital and sign the consent forms…"

"I'll be right there! Please start the surgery first!" I cried.

Bodyguards were lined up at the front gate. I hung up and cut toward the corner of the courtyard, using a table and chair to climb over the wall. I'd just gotten halfway up when a harsh spotlight shone down on the wall, freezing me in place.

"Kim Slater, you're supposed to be the dignified Mrs. Granger. And here you are, using a bathroom break as an excuse to climb over a wall. You're a total disgrace to the Granger family!"

Even with the glaring lights blinding me, I recognized Winona Judd's voice at once. After all, she was the most powerful person in the Granger residence right now.

"Someone, drag Mrs. Granger down already. What are you all standing around for? Waiting for a circus act?" she snapped at the household staff.

The next second, I was yanked down hard. I hit the ground, rolled, and scrambled up, rushing to her on my hands and knees. "What will it take for you to let me go to the hospital?"

Winona looked at me and sneered. "Mrs. Granger, what will it take for you to finally learn the rules? For sneaking out at night, you're grounded for three days!"

Three days? I could wait that long, but Mom couldn't.

Her condition had been up and down for the past six months. The hospital had issued several critical condition notices. Any visit could be the last time I ever saw her.

Why else would I have done what I'd done? After a huge fight with my husband, Anson Granger, I'd waited until he was in the shower to sneak out and slip past Winona's surveillance. I'd risked everything to get to the hospital.

I just hadn't expected her to catch up to me this fast.

My phone buzzed nonstop in my pocket. I didn't even have to look to know it was the hospital urging me to hurry up.

Winona turned to leave. I reached out and grabbed her, but she threw me off, looking at my dirt-covered body with disgust. "I really don't know what Anson saw in you. How did a hick like you end up as his wife?"

I followed her gaze and looked down. Only then did I realize my clothes were torn and that two long bloody gashes ran across my arm.

"Ms. Judd, what do you want? Whatever I have, I'll give it to you. Just let me go to the hospital right now," I said.

She burst into laughter, as if she'd heard the world's biggest joke. After a long while, she asked, "Why don't you tell me what exactly you have? I wouldn't even bother with you if you weren't Mrs. Granger, Kim.

"I'm only doing this because I don't want you going out and ruining Mr. Granger's reputation. I'm warning you—stop trying to be clever. I have plenty of ways to punish you!"

I'd seen what she was capable of. I knew she wasn't bluffing. I gritted my teeth and watched her walk away, hatred burning so hot in my chest I felt like I might fall apart.

I was thrown back into my room. The pain in my arm finally began to spread in sharp, dense waves. My whole body ached as if it had been taken apart and put back together.

I suddenly remembered a time when I'd fallen as a child. Mom had hurried to me with heartache and picked me up, coaxing me tenderly. Dad had gently brushed the dirt from my clothes.

Those lovely moments would never happen again.

Dad had died in a car crash. Was Mom going to leave me now, too?

When I heard Anson's voice outside, I wiped my tears with the back of my hand and pushed open the door. I saw him follow Winona into her room.

He sounded anxious and concerned. "Winnie, what happened? Why is there blood on you? Let me see where you're hurt."

She squealed and said coyly, "Oh, Mr. Granger! That wouldn't be appropriate…"

My fingers curled against the cold wooden door. I stared at the long gashes on my arm and smiled bitterly. I was the one Anson was supposed to care about, not Winona, who acted like she owned the place.

I knocked hard on the door. Inside, Anson answered impatiently, clearly annoyed at being interrupted. "Who is it?"

I balled my hands into fists and said, "Anson, it's me. Let's get a divorce."

Kim's POVThe divorce from Anson didn't go smoothly. He kept trying to win me back. When Will once again offered to take care of it for me, I finally agreed. For the first time, the calm mask he always wore rippled with emotion. He smiled faintly and left.I started to pack my things, but honestly, I didn't have much. I hadn't taken anything with me when leaving the Granger residence. Everything I'd been using for the past two months in Will's place was stuff he'd bought for me.I looked around. There was nothing I really needed to sort out, so I just grabbed my ID and documents and headed out.As I reached the corner of the street, the people tailing me finally lost their patience and rushed at me. I held my breath and dodged, then saw clearly who it was—Winona's parents. They were clutching a knife and a burlap sack, looking both desperate and vicious. Her mother's eyes were bloodshot. "You bitch! My daughter went crazy and died in a car crash because of you, and you're still o

Kim's POVThe rain came down in sheets. Will waited for me outside the cemetery; I stood shoulder to shoulder with Anson, while Winona kneeled in front of us."Do you know what I was doing during the two months I disappeared?" I asked.Anson shook his head. I heard my own voice come out cold and steady. "I was on my knees at that charity gala's venue, picking up my mom's ashes bit by bit. But they'd already been mixed with explosives and turned into fireworks. There wasn't much left of her."I kneeled there for three days, searching everywhere for pieces of her. All I got was a small handful."Anson was stunned. "Kim, I'm sorry. I didn't know. Why didn't you tell me?""Would you have believed me?"Tears slid down my cheeks as those memories flashed before my eyes. "Anson, do I still have any dignity or trust left in front of you? You were willing to hurt me for anyone you wanted, so why did you think you still had the right to ask me to rely on you?"I wiped my tears away and s

Kim's POVAll I did was greet Anson, and he rushed over to grab my wrist like some desperate dog."Kim, it really is you! Do you know how long I've been looking for you? Where have you been?" he cried.I didn't answer. I just found it ridiculous. When I was bending over backward to be the perfect wife he wanted, he couldn't stand the sight of me. Now that I didn't care anymore, he suddenly couldn't let go.Will stepped forward, twisted Anson's arm behind his back, and slammed him down on the conference table. "Sir, show some respect to Ms. Slater."Anson cried out in pain. Will released him and shoved him away. "Put your hands on her again, and I'll cut them off."Anson stared at him in shock. "Will Chapman? Kim is my wife! Who are you to interfere in our private matters?"Will let out a cold laugh. "That's funny. I don't remember you rushing out to claim she was your wife when she almost died."Anson turned to me. "What the hell is going on? Kim, I'm also devastated by your mo

Third-person POVThe Judd family's company was being forcibly liquidated by the court and was on the brink of bankruptcy. Everyone was circling like vultures, waiting to grab a piece.Winona knew that only Anson could save her. Just like she always did, she clung to him and turned on the charm, begging him to acquire Judd Group ahead of everyone else and give her family a way out. But Anson remained unmoved. She shook his arm in annoyance. "Anson, did you even hear what I said? I turned down an offer from a royal family abroad just to come work for—""Was Kim really the one who hurt you?" He cut her off.Winona had never seen him this cold and intimidating before. Her fingers tightened around the strap of her curse, and she tried to sound casual. "Why are you bringing that up again? You still don't believe me? If I were lying, why wouldn't she dare come back and confront me?"Anson ignored that and pressed, "Who did you sell all of Kim's things to?"That made her panic, but she

Third-person POV"Anson, Mrs. Granger snuck out to that charity event and completely humiliated herself. I was kind enough to step in and clean up the mess for her, but she held a grudge against me for it. She's hated me for a long time, and she even hired people to beat me up."Winona sobbed so hard she could barely breathe. Deep down, she knew that if Anson still had no idea where Kim was or what she was doing, that meant he also didn't know what she had done to Kim. In short, the initiative was still firmly in her hands."They hung me up and whipped me. Anson, it hurt so much…" She threw herself into Anson's arms, carefully studying his expression. "She must know she's never coming back. That's why she doesn't want you to find her."Anson's hand trembled as he patted her back. "You're saying Kim was the one who sent people to whip you? Wasn't she locked in the basement? How did things turn out like this?"Winona lifted her face, which was thinner after her ordeal, and showed hi

Kim's POVRight after that, a jacket was thrown over my head.Amid the chaos of shouting, blows, and screams, a man shielded me in a corner and gently untied the rope around me. He said, "Don't be scared. This will be over soon."Only when the noise around us faded into silence, and he carried me out of the dark warehouse to sit me down on a soft seat, did I realize I'd been shaking the whole time. The jacket was lifted from my head. "I'm sorry. I got here late."I pressed my back against the seat and opened my eyes, feeling wary. The man in front of me had sharp, striking features, but his gaze was gentle. He was a complete stranger, yet for some reason, he made some of the unease in me fade."Who are you?" I asked. His hand, which had been clenched on top of his knee, slowly relaxed. A flicker of disappointment flashed in his eyes. "You really don't remember me."I didn't catch it. "Sorry, what did you say?"He straightened up and looked at me, his gaze gentle yet restrained
