Chapter 5

作者: Phew
My gaze swept over the room, taking in every face. Evelyn looked indifferent, Maxwell was greedy, Lucy displayed a sense of entitlement, and Tiffany's tear-streaked face was full of despair.

With that, I picked up the pen and signed my name.

Evelyn practically snatched the papers back to check the signature. The moment she confirmed it, her face lit up with joy.

"This is wonderful! Max, we've got the money now! Your wedding's all paid for!"

"Yes!" Maxwell whooped, throwing his arms around her. "I knew you loved me most, Aunt Evelyn! There will even be enough left over to buy a car!"

Lucy beamed from ear to ear, too. "This is perfect! Now, Max can have a show-stopping wedding! We're doing this big!"

At last, my father-in-law, Thomas Larson, spoke up. "Once you're married, stop fooling around and start taking life seriously."

The Larsons gathered together, buzzing with excitement as they discussed the wedding—what hotel to book and how to spend the money. Not one of them spared Tiffany or me another glance.

A few minutes later, Maxwell finally noticed us again. He turned, his eyes full of disdain as he spat, "Lawrence, you've signed the agreement and the money's transferred. What are you still doing here?"

He pointed at the door. "This house belongs to Aunty Evelyn now, which means it's mine. Get the hell out! Just looking at you two makes me sick."

At that, Tiffany looked up at me. Her face was streaked with tears, and fear flickered in her eyes. "Dad… What do we do now? Where are we supposed to go?"

I met her gaze, then reached out to wipe her tears. "Don't be scared."

Without hesitation, I opened the app and pulled up my itinerary. One quick swipe, and I canceled the Miravia family vacation and the wedding reception.

As soon as the cancellations went through, Maxwell's phone rang.

"Hello? What? The reception's canceled? And there's a penalty fee? 38 thousand dollars?"

He jerked his head up, his bloodshot eyes locking onto mine. "Lawrence Zimmerman! Did you seriously cancel my wedding reception?"

Almost at the same time, Evelyn's phone rang.

She answered, confusion flickering across her face. In the next second, her expression darkened. "What? The family trip's canceled? I've already bragged about it to all my friends! How am I supposed to face them now?

"The deposit's non-refundable? And you're deducting 40 thousand dollars?"

She jumped to her feet, pointing at me as she screamed, "Lawrence Zimmerman! Have you lost your damn mind? I've been looking forward to that trip for a whole year!"

I stopped in my tracks and turned back to Evelyn. "I paid for it, and I was the one who signed the contracts. I can cancel them if I want to. You can cover the penalties yourself and book your own trip.

"But I hear all the prime dates and locations are gone. And a popular destination like Miravia? Good luck finding anything left."

Having said my piece, I took Tiffany's hand and headed downstairs.

We had just gotten downstairs when Maxwell came running. He seized my arm and demanded, "You think you can leave just like that? You're not going anywhere until my wedding and trip are back on!"

His eyes were bloodshot, and his breathing was ragged.

Seeing that, Tiffany ducked behind me.

Just then, a black luxury car glided to a stop in front of us.

The window rolled down, revealing a driver in white gloves.

"Mr. Zimmerman," he called out respectfully. "Mr. Zimmerman Sr. sent me to pick you up. He said you've had your fun out here, and it's time to come home."

James pulled out a thick stack of bank statements and continued, "Over the past 12 years, my client has paid a total of 420 thousand dollars for the defendant's tuition, living expenses, and other costs."The defendant is now an adult. He's fully capable of working, yet has lived off others for years. He even went as far as to harm the very person who raised him. We have the right to reclaim these ill-gotten gains."A shiver ran down Maxwell's spine. The defense attorney tried to interject, but James cut him off and played surveillance footage from the internet cafe. In the video, Maxwell grinned viciously at the computer screen, muttering, "Lawrence Zimmerman… Let's see what you can do this time. I'll ruin you!"Then, an audio recording played. It was Maxwell, threatening Evelyn over the phone. "Aunt Evelyn! You have to sell the house! What am I supposed to do if you don't?"The gallery fell silent at once. Everyone looked at Maxwell, their expressions unreadable. During clo

Maxwell's phone was blowing up. Relatives, friends, and even his former coworkers were all demanding to know what had happened. He hid in a corner of the internet cafe, too afraid to answer the calls. Yet, there was no escaping reality. The owner walked over and rapped on the table. "Hey man, you do realize you're on the news, right?"Maxwell looked up, his eyes vacant. The owner shoved a phone into Maxwell's hands. The screen was full of news reports about him. "We run a small business here. We can't handle someone like you," the owner said, pointing toward the door. "Pay your tab and get out."Maxwell staggered out of the internet cafe in a daze. Then, his phone rang again. This time, it was Violet. He picked it up immediately, as if it were a lifeline. "Violet! Please, just let me explain—""What's there to explain?" Violet's voice was icy. "Maxwell, you really are something, huh? You told me your family was rich, but it was all a lie? You even hit your cousin! What's

Evelyn pulled out her phone from her bag and dialed the real estate agent. "Hello? Taylor, it's Evelyn. I need to sell my old house as quickly as possible."The agent said something on the other end of the line. In the next instant, her face went pale. "What? Seized by the court?"A beat later, Evelyn hung up. Her hands trembled uncontrollably, and she could barely hold the phone. "T-The agent said… The house has been seized. We can't sell it."The moment Maxwell heard that, his mind went blank. "What?" He turned to me and barked, "Was this your doing?"I pulled out a court document from my briefcase. "Three days ago, I filed a lawsuit. I wanted to recover the money I spent raising you over the past 12 years and to freeze your assets since you were suspected of extortion."I gently laid the papers on the display counter and added, "So, that house is off-limits."Maxwell's eyes widened in disbelief. "Lawrence! I'll kill you!" he roared. He lunged at me again, completely unh

For a moment, silence enveloped the showroom. Around us, customers turned to stare and began whispering among themselves."Look at him, acting like he's loaded," someone muttered.Another said, "With the way he acted, I thought he was the real deal."Maxwell's face flushed red. He snatched the card back and snapped, "Is something wrong with your machine? There's at least 100 thousand dollars on it!""Sir, the machine is fine," the salesperson replied with a practiced smile. "If you'd like, I can take you to the ATM next door to check your balance."Livid, Violet stepped out of the car. "Maxwell Larson! What is this? How could you bring me here to buy a car if you don't even have the money? Are you messing with me?""No… Violet, hear me out…""What's there to explain? I heard everything! There's not a single cent in your account!"Violet shook with rage as she spat, "I can't believe I fell for a poser like you! We're done!"With that, she grabbed her bag and stormed out."Viol

The first few messages that came through were threats. One read, "Lawrence Zimmerman! Damn it! Put my wedding reception back on the schedule right now! Or I swear this isn't over!""Are you even seeing this? Violet's whole family has already been invited! Now, the hotel says there's no availability! What the hell am I supposed to do?""Don't think renting a fancy car and hiring a few actors is enough to fool me! I'll be at your office tomorrow raising hell!"A few minutes passed without a reply from me, and Maxwell's tone shifted. He wrote, "Uncle Lawrence, why don't you help me get the reception back on first? We can talk about the money later. I really don't know how to explain this to Violet's family…"Eventually, it turned into outright pleading. "Uncle Lawrence, I'm begging you. All the prime dates are booked out. Violet says if we don't hold the reception, she's calling off the engagement…"The next message read, "I know I was wrong. I really do. Please, just help me t

Maxwell's hand froze in midair. His eyes went wide, and even his voice cracked in shock as he stammered, "W-What happened?"The driver stepped out and opened the door."Mr. Zimmerman, Mr. Zimmerman Sr.'s been waiting for you," he said politely.I patted Tiffany's hand. "Get in.""Wait!" Maxwell snapped back to his senses and grabbed the car door. "Where did you rent this from? Who do you think you're fooling?"Evelyn sized up the Rolls-Royce with a sneer. "It's obviously rented. These rental companies have everything nowadays."At her words, Maxwell grew more aggressive. He jabbed a finger at me, snapping, "Your act's blown! So, you're some bigshot from Zimmerman Group, huh? Well, then I'm the mayor!"I couldn't be bothered to argue. I simply pulled the black card from my pocket and tossed it to him."See for yourself."Maxwell caught the card. On the front, it read "Zimmerman Group", and on the back was my photo and title—Chairman. But he poked at the letters and shot back
