Chapter 2

Author: Mr. Prosperity
Unfortunately, I found no trace of it being a joke.

It was no wonder that even when I was back, Ethan never visited me.

I only came to today’s gathering because I insisted on it.

That was it then. He despised me for being “tainted.”

But I had told him several times that nothing had happened. That man had done nothing.

He had only left me in the villa for one night.

But Ethan did not believe me.

When he saw me, he pulled Yelena into his arms. He looked at me with indifference.

“You heard everything?”

I nodded. My sharp nails dug into my palm until they almost broke the skin.

The pain brought back a little control. I tried to speak calmly.

“There is no need for this.

“Ethan, if you want to break up, just say it.”

He did not answer. He laughed mockingly and looked at me in disdain.

“Jane, we’ve been together for eight years.

“Who would want you if we split up? Just because you came back safe does not mean you’re innocent anymore.

“But don’t worry. After all this time, if I ever end up getting married, the bride will be you.”

Hearing that, my heart sank. It felt like I was drowning and could not breathe.

I squeezed my fist hard and tried to find some rationality in the pain.

After a long while, I began to calm down.

I quietly walked up to Ethan. Right in front of his smug face, I took off my engagement ring and placed it beside him.

“Then, you should’ve just said so. I am not the type to cling to people. If you can’t say it, I can.”

I looked at him calmly. My eyes were devoid of emotion.

“Ethan, we’re done.”

With that, I picked up my bag and coat to leave, but someone blocked the door.

“Come on, Ms. Lowell, we were just joking.

“You have been with Mr. Stone all these years. You aren’t really going to break up over a joke, are you?”

Ethan’s face darkened, and his voice was harsh as he said, “Let her go! No one will want her except me, anyway!”

At that, the person blocking my way stepped back.

I forced out a wry smile and walked out of the private room.

I could guess why he would say such a thing with so much confidence. He probably thought I had no one else to rely on.

I had met him at a part-time job in college.

Back then, both my parents were dead, and I had no power. I did not even dare to fight back when someone mistreated me.

He had repeatedly stood in front of me and shielded me from leering customers and a manager who always seemed to pick on me.

I had begun to have feelings for him because of that.

So, on New Year’s Eve, when he asked me if I wanted to be with him, I agreed without hesitation.

What followed afterward seemed natural.

After graduation, he started his own business.

To support him, I used all my savings. At our poorest, we shared a tiny rental with only one bed and one blanket.

Water leaked through the walls and dripped from the ceiling when it rained.

When I shivered from the cold, he held me and said, “Jane, I will give you the best life I can.”

And he did. As his company grew, our lives improved.

Through it all, he remained devoted to me. I thought our love was a blessing from the heavens.

I never imagined that one day, fate could take it all back.

I thought Ethan was too proud to ever show his face again after suffering such humiliation. But on Valentine’s Day, two weeks later, while I was on a date with Lucas, I ran into him outside the restroom.Ethan was no longer as arrogant as he once used to be. The tailored suits were gone and were replaced by work clothes. Even the accessories he always wore had vanished. The moment our eyes met, he shoved me into a back room. He tied me to a chair, pressed a knife to my neck, and whispered, “Jane, how could you be so cruel to me?!“You’re with Lucas now, and you even ruined my company! He sent me overseas just to keep me away. “I almost didn’t make it back alive, but here I am.”With every word, the knife crept closer to my skin until a drop of blood slid down my neck. I tried to pull back, but it only set him off. Tearing open his shirt, he shouted like a madman, “You’re scared? What right do you have to be scared? Do you know what I’ve been through?“Lucas is a madman.

The moment Ethan saw me, his eyes lit up with surprise. He walked over with Yelena at his side. Before he could say anything, Yelena spoke up.“Ms. Lowell, are you here for Ethan? “That day was a misunderstanding. You like him so much. How could you possibly marry someone else?”Her words made everyone look at me.The moment they saw me, whispers rose in the crowd.“That’s Jane Lowell, isn’t it? I heard on her engagement day that Ethan’s rival kidnapped her. More than one guy…”“I heard the same thing. They say there’s even a video. Scandalous!”“She looks so proper, but in private, she’s wild!”The gossip spread quickly. Yelena’s eyes flashed smugly. Ethan did not look happy, but he let the whispers continue. He looked at me like he was doing me a favor.“Jane, for the sake of what we had, I’ll give you a chance. “If you apologize to me right now, the wedding’s still on for next month. Don’t worry. You’ll still be the bride.”He looked so sure of himself and acted as t

I caught Lucas’s proud gaze and smiled at him. I wrapped my arms around his neck and said, “Thank you. I really like it.”His expression shifted slightly. He held me close and said in a low, hoarse voice, “Jane, don’t do this. I won’t be able to stop myself.”…I never expected Lucas to give me shares in his company, let alone help me build one of my own.The next morning after breakfast, I sat at my desk and reviewed a report for an upcoming meeting. Before I finished, the office door swung open.Lucas walked in wearing a tailored black suit. He set a cup of coffee in front of me. “Ms. Lowell, your coffee.”I looked up at him and could not help but think of last night. His eyes had welled up with tears as he begged for my forgiveness. At that moment, I had seen for the very first time that a man could feel moved too.Lucas noticed me staring, but instead of looking shy, he smirked and took off his jacket to show off his broad shoulders and strong build. He leaned closer a

“Jane, are you really this cheap? I was gone for one night, and you ran to another man? Who is he?”If last night left me disappointed, then today shattered every last trace of hope.I shoved Ethan aside, pulled the coat lying next to me, and said coldly, “Who I sleep with is none of your concern. We broke up last night. Remember? “And this is my house. You should leave!”Ethan was about to say something when Lucas emerged. Ethan glared and snapped, “Really? Him? Why is he here? Jane, are you really this desperate?”Before he could finish, I struck him hard across the face.Ethan did not even have time to react. Lucas walked over, pulled me into his arms, and looked at him with a smug smile.“Mr. Stone, what are you doing? Don’t you know that love can’t be forced? Besides, I’m Jane’s boyfriend now.”Seeing Lucas’s smug face seemed to trigger Ethan even more. He tried to grab my wrist and shouted, “Jane! You—”But before he could finish, Lucas kicked him out the door and locke

The sudden kiss cut through everything. I thought Lucas would push me away in disgust. Our relationship was far from good. It was hostile, to say the least. When the Stone family went bankrupt, the Grant family had fanned the flames.Ethan hated Lucas to the core, and Lucas naturally did not feel kindly toward him.On the day of our planned engagement, their feud boiled over and nearly turned violent. Soon after, Lucas kidnapped me. He ambushed my car on the way to the ceremony. Everyone thought he would hurt me. He locked me in a villa but treated me well. He made sure I was well-fed and safe.I thought Lucas hated me. I was, after all, the woman of his greatest rival. Lucas did not let go. He carried me back into the car and whispered, “Jane, if you kissed me just to get back at Ethan, I’d be heartbroken.“For those who call you tainted, I’ll break their bones, tear their skin, and make each one kneel before you and apologize. Would you like that?”Lucas seemed like a

I pushed open the door and walked alone into the endless night.Under the dim moonlight, tears filled my eyes. Everything was blurry, and I could barely see the road ahead.I just kept walking in the darkness. When I finally wiped my eyes, I realized I had walked into a dead end.I forced out a wry smile as I looked at the wrong path in front of me. Just as I was about to turn away, I saw a drunken figure behind me.“Hey, beautiful. Out so late? Something bothering you? Maybe I can keep you company.”Fear gripped me as a man stepped closer. “Stay back, or I will call the police!”The man ignored that and walked toward me.“Don’t worry, little lady. I will make you happy.”As he got closer, I gripped my bag tightly and swung it at him. With a loud smash, my phone hit him on the head. He screamed in pain.“Ahh!!! How dare you?! You’ve done it now!”I tried to run past him as he grunted in pain.He reacted instantly, grabbed me, and knocked me to the ground.“You! How dare
