That Damned Bond

Penulis: Lucy L
(Clara's POV)

The silver blade stopped less than an inch from my eye.

"Stop." I forced the words through the searing pain of the burns on my neck, my voice hoarse but impossibly steady. "I know what you want. Kill me now and you get nothing."

Silas's hand froze. His eyes narrowed as he studied me. "You want to make a deal? Everyone in the Northern Territory knows you love Damien. You'd really betray him?"

I twisted my lips into a bitter, devastated smile. "You heard every word of that phone call. He's about to marry Wendy. Our contract has three days left. I need to look out for myself."

The killing intent in Silas's eyes dimmed slightly, replaced by unconcealed mockery. He straightened, towering over me.

"So let me get this straight. You're Damien's true mate—his fated mate—but there's absolutely nothing between you. He threw you away completely and chose a highborn Alpha's daughter from Red Moon."

Every word landed on my spine with precision.

I closed my eyes and nodded. "Yes."

"Good." Silas sheathed the blade. "Write down the names of every covert ally from those eighteen major events."

"Of course." I opened my eyes and looked him dead in the face. "But I need rest first. The silver destroyed my nerve endings. My brain can't recall those encrypted lists right now."

Silas's expression turned lethal. He grabbed my collar and hauled me up. "You think you can negotiate with me?"

I didn't flinch, meeting his furious stare with cold calm. I was certain he wouldn't kill me. Not yet.

Two seconds later, Silas cursed under his breath and dropped me. He waved at the two thugs. "Lock her in the basement. Give her pen and paper."

The basement was pitch black. I couldn't tell if it was day or night. I held the pen and scrawled random, jumbled characters across the pages.

I was stalling.

No matter what had happened between Damien and me, the Black Moon Pack had given me a second life. I would never betray its secrets. I'd been silently tracking the guards' shift patterns, waiting for a chance to escape.

Finally, during a gap when a guard delivered food and collected papers, I found my opening.

I kicked the guard's knee out, grabbed his access card, and sprinted from the basement toward the warehouse exit.

My hand had just closed around the rusted iron handle of the door when a crushing force clamped down on the back of my neck from behind.

Silas stood behind me. Coarse wolf fur had sprouted across his hand, razor claws piercing my skin.

"I really hate being lied to." His voice dripped with lethal fury. He raised his other hand, claws aimed straight at my heart.

BOOM.

An explosion ripped through the air. The massive iron door was blown clean off its hinges, slamming into the load-bearing wall.

Through the billowing smoke, Damien charged in with a dozen fully armed Black Moon warriors. His eyes found me instantly—Silas's claws at my neck.

Damien moved with blinding speed. One kick sent Silas flying. He grabbed me and pulled me against his chest, shielding me completely.

"Are you all right?" Damien's voice was low. The hands gripping my shoulders trembled.

I looked up. Through the smoke, I saw his eyes. His gaze lingered on my neck and arms for one second—and in that second, I caught the raw concern and fear burning behind them.

But it lasted only a second. He turned away, his expression snapping back to cold, lethal focus, locked on Silas.

Silas scraped himself off the floor, laughing like a madman. Behind him, his two men raised a heavy rocket launcher. The backblast lit up the entire darkened warehouse.

"Get down!"

Damien let out a savage snarl. He threw out both arms and hurled me toward a protected corner with every ounce of his strength.

I hit the ground hard. In the final moment before I blacked out, all I saw was Damien's broad back.

His arms spread wide, shielding me completely.

...

I didn't know how long I was out.

When I opened my eyes, I was in the Black Moon Pack's medical ward.

The burns on the back of my neck screamed with agony. I ripped the IV from my hand and pushed myself upright.

"Miss Clara, you can't move!" A nurse rushed over and tried to hold me down.

"Where's Damien?" I gripped the nurse's arm.

The intensity in my eyes startled her. She raised a hand and pointed toward the adjacent private ward.

I threw off the covers, pressed my bare feet to the ice-cold floor, and walked step by step to the neighboring room. The door was ajar.

Through the gap, I saw him.

Damien sat on the edge of his hospital bed in an oversized gown. His back was wrapped in thick white bandages, blood seeping through the gauze.

Wendy was sitting in his lap, arms locked around his neck. Damien held her, leaning down to press a slow, gentle kiss to her forehead.

"Don't be scared." His deep voice carried clearly through the door. "I'll never leave you."

Wendy burrowed into the crook of his neck, her tone dripping with suspicion and reproach. "Damien, why did you go to that warehouse yourself? Silas had heavy weapons! You nearly got yourself killed saving her! Do you really love her?"

I held my breath. My fingers dug into the doorframe.

"It's just that damned mate bond." Damien's voice was flat. "The Moon Goddess's decree means I can't watch her die. That's all."

That damned mate bond.

Something cracked behind my ribs. The pain was instant and absolute.

He turned, tilted Wendy's chin up, and kissed her on the lips. Wendy closed her eyes and kissed him back, her fingers winding around his neck.

I turned to leave.

The instant I moved, Wendy's voice drifted out from the room.

"Clara? How long have you been standing there?"

(Clara's POV)His lips were against my ear, breath scalding."I missed you so much. These two days without you—that's when I realized how much you mean to me."His arms tightened, locking me against his chest. My face pressed to his shirt, his heartbeat filling my ear.I was stunned. I'd never expected the cold, guarded Damien to say something so raw. What was this supposed to be? The master coming home and tossing his waiting dog a bone? Then he said something that turned me to stone."Have a baby with me."My mind went blank for two full seconds. Then cold shot up my spine from the base.A baby.He was talking about a baby.I didn't move. Still leaning against his chest, breathing still steady. But inside, my thoughts were in freefall. He was so good at this.I was nothing more than a mistress who couldn't be acknowledged—an Omega who didn't even have a title. He wanted me to give him a child—and then what?A child just like me. No father willing to claim them, no Luna mother to shie

  • I Reject You, Alpha   Little Liar

(Clara's POV)I looked at him.He meant it. Not a drunken impulse, not infatuation with a pretty face—his eyes were clear to the bottom, without a single impurity."Ryan," I took a breath, "I appreciate this, but—""I know what you're going to say." He cut me off with a smile, though underneath it was the tension of not wanting to be turned down. "You think I'm being impulsive. We've known each other for days. It doesn't make sense.""That's not—""Or is it because you think I'm bad with women?" He scratched the back of his head, ears going red. "That exhibition was actually my first time attending a social event without my family. I was terrified, honestly—you were the only person I worked up the nerve to talk to that whole day."He looked down at his interlaced fingers on the bar, voice dropping. "You're so composed. Everything you do is measured, precise, never panicked. The first time I saw you—climbing through that window in a blue dress—I just thought, this person is extraordinar

  • I Reject You, Alpha   Choose Me

(Damien's POV)On the road to the capital.I didn't know why, but a heaviness had settled in my chest, as if something were slipping away from me."How long will the alliance signing take?"Marcus flipped through the itinerary. "Meeting with the Alliance ministers tonight. Formal negotiations on clause details tomorrow. Day three, once all delegates have arrived, the mining-military exchange ceremony. Followed by a reception—earliest return Thursday, arriving Friday."Five days. Too long."Cancel all receptions."Marcus blinked. "Alpha, the reception is hosted by Red Moon—""Tell them Black Moon doesn't have time for socializing. We sign and we leave."Marcus glanced at me, said nothing further, and made a note on the schedule.Wendy leaned forward from the opposite seat, tone gentle. "Damien, Red Moon put a lot of effort into the reception. If we cancel outright, won't that—""What do you think?""I think… maybe a compromise? You show your face, don't have to stay long—""No."Wendy p

  • I Reject You, Alpha   The Moon Halo Ball

(Wendy's POV)The handmaid looked at me once. Then turned and walked out."Where are you—"She didn't answer. The door closed.I stood in the wreckage of the room, still clutching the shattered base of the vase, a shard having sliced a line across my knuckle.Less than ten seconds later, the mind-link flared. My mother's voice crashed down like a hammer—"Are you insane? You stupid girl! Are you trying to destroy Red Moon?!""Mother—""Your maid just told me everything. You're looking for the wolfsbane vial? Have you lost your mind?!""You're scolding me instead of helping me?" My eyes burned, voice shaking. "She's walking all over me and you're just going to stand there?""That's exactly why I'm scolding you!" My mother's voice cut like a blade. "I truly regret spoiling you—look at how foolish you've turned out!""I—""Shut up and listen." Her tone dropped. Calm now—but the kind of calm that was worse than fury. "Forget that Clara just tried to kill herself with wolfsbane—this is when

  • I Reject You, Alpha   Wait for Me

(Clara's POV)His fingers were still pressed against the mark on my nape. Heat radiated outward from the point, fire spreading beneath my skin.I wanted to pull away. My body wouldn't listen."Don't." Damien's voice was right against my ear, a low vibration deep in his chest. "Your body's more honest than your mouth."His lips traced from my ear down the side of my neck. When his tongue grazed the sensitive point, my knees buckled. One hand caught my waist to steady me, the other slid from my nape to my shoulder, easing the collar aside."Damien—""Hmm?""You leave tomorrow—""That's exactly why I should leave you something to remember."He kissed me. Not like last night—rough, possessive, claiming. This was slow. Searching. Lips brushing lips, barely there, as if asking whether I'd answer.I hated the fated bond. Hated that my body still went soft for this man when my mind had already decided to leave. Reason said push him away. My hands grabbed the front of his shirt—not pushing. Pul

  • I Reject You, Alpha   Overstepping

(Damien's POV)"When Clara heard I was going to the capital for the signing—what was her reaction?"Marcus stood across from my desk, looking uncomfortable."Calm." He chose his words carefully. "No emotional response at all. When you told her you'd be gone a week, she… just nodded."Just nodded. Two years ago, when I'd left for three days to negotiate at the Northern Alliance, Clara had waited at the pack house entrance for a full hour before going inside.Every time I came back, the first thing she did was check me for injuries. Now I tell her I'm leaving for a week, and she nods."Alpha." Wendy came down the hallway in travel clothes, pulling a sleek suitcase. "The car's ready. Red Moon has called twice already—the sooner we reach the capital and sign, the sooner we can come back and finalize the wedding.""Postpone it."Wendy blinked. "What?""Departure pushed to tomorrow. I have something to take care of."Wendy's smile didn't falter, but her gaze dropped to my neck—just above the
