Chapter 3

Author: Ophelia
The next day, my mother still couldn't let it go and took me to the Healing Sanctuary.

She went off with the registration form to find a healer, telling me to wait for her.

I nodded and sat quietly on the bench.

A few minutes later, a burst of commotion broke out around me.

"Rowena? What are you doing here?"

"Oh my god, it's really her! Wasn't she accused of betraying the Pack and leaking defense secrets?"

"The Elder Council already opened an investigation on her, and she has the nerve to just sit here like nothing happened!"

I frowned.

"I didn't betray the Pack. Why shouldn't I be here?"

Before the words had fully settled, a hand grabbed my arm and yanked me off the bench.

"Rowena, how dare you show your face! Come with me to the Elder Council and confess everything you've done!"

I recognized Alex's voice and shook his hand off.

"Alex, have you lost your mind? I haven't done anything. Why would I go to the Elder Council?"

Scarlett stepped forward immediately, putting on her most earnest expression.

"Rowena, please stop being so stubborn. Those were our Pack's defense secrets!"

"Because of the leak, border guards were attacked by a rival pack. People have already died."

"If you admit what you did now, maybe the Elder Council will consider going easier on you."

I shoved her aside.

"What are you even talking about? I never leaked any secrets. Why should I confess to anything?"

Suddenly, a large man charged forward and grabbed my collar.

"You're the one who sold our defense plans to the enemy pack, aren't you?"

His eyes were bloodshot, his voice shaking with rage.

"My brother was on that border patrol! He trusted his own people, and he died in an ambush!"

"Do you know he had a wife and children? You traitor. What gives you the right to still be alive after getting them killed?"

He shoved me hard to the ground. My whole body throbbed with pain.

I struggled to explain. "You've got the wrong person! I didn't sell any intel. I never even touched those defense records!"

Seeing me on the ground, Scarlett jumped in right away.

"I know Rowena's family is powerful. I know she's going to be the Pack's Luna."

"But no matter who she is, she can't use her status and connections to treat the entire Pack's safety like a game!"

Alex pointed at me too, his face a mask of disappointment and fury.

"Rowena, how can you still claim you're innocent? I already told you, the mate bond isn't a tool for you to go rummaging through my memories!"

"Those defense plans and secret passages, nobody outside my inner circle would have had a chance to know about them!"

Everyone around us heard them, and the angry stares converged on me.

"I can't believe she'd sell out her own people for personal gain!"

"Just because she's the Alpha heir's fated mate, she thinks she can do whatever she wants? Those Pack members who died, do their lives mean nothing?"

The man rushed at me again and wrapped his hands around my throat.

"Just because your status is higher, you think ordinary Pack members' lives don't matter? I'll make you pay for my dead brother!"

I could barely breathe, thrashing desperately under his grip.

Just then, guards finally arrived and pulled the man off me by force.

Alex looked at me coldly and gave his order to the guards.

"Take her in. Hand her over to the Elder Council for judgment."

My hands were pinned. The cold bite of silver restraints locked around my wrists.

That was when one of the guards spoke up. "What's going on here?"

Someone nearby answered furiously.

"This woman sold out the Pack's defense secrets and got border guards killed. They're taking her to stand trial!"

In the chaos, someone grabbed at my clothes.

The shawl across my chest fell away.

The noise died instantly.

Every pair of eyes dropped to my chest.

Alex froze.

Then someone in the crowd screamed.

"Oh my god, she... She doesn't have a heart!"

I tried to scoot back, but my wrists and ankles were tied tight with thick rope.Scarlett grabbed me by the hair and dragged me in front of Alex.I forced myself to stay calm."Scarlett, you think putting on my face makes you me? You think my parents and the Elders are all idiots?"Scarlett laughed."You're about to die anyway, so I'll be nice and tell you everything."She gave Alex a look.He pulled two skin masks out of a box next to him. Then two strange, crawling creatures."Rowena, you've been tangled up with Alex this long. I bet you had no idea he's been secretly studying forbidden magic."Scarlett ran her fingers over one of the masks."With a blood curse and a parasite, the mask fuses with the host's body. Add your family mark, and the identity holds up even against a standard bloodline test.""Once the ritual's done, I become you. Your name. Your money. Everything that should have been yours."Her eyes dropped to my chest. Her smile got even nastier."And you? You don't even

A month later, the dark warlock put my heart back.I still had to take the elixir on schedule. I still couldn't do anything too strenuous. Before I left, he warned me again to be careful with my body.I took it to heart and went home to keep recovering. The moment I walked into Pack territory, a few Pack members recognized me.They froze for a second. Then they all crowded around me, beaming."Rowena, it's really you! You're finally back!""How are you feeling? Is the warlock's treatment going okay?"I smiled and nodded. I told them I was a lot better and just needed a little more time to rest.Hearing it from me, they finally relaxed. As we were talking, someone suddenly lowered their voice and leaned in. "Rowena, have you heard what's going on with Alex?"At his name, I stopped for a beat.Another Pack member jumped in. "I heard he's buried in debt. A bunch of people he owes money to have already shown up in Pack territory looking for him."I pulled myself together fast and put the c

That night, the private investigator called again. He told me they'd finally repaired the security footage from Alex's estate. The parts someone had deleted on purpose were back.I told him to send me the video right away.It wasn't very clear. But you could make out a woman. She was in my family's maid uniform. After I left my room, she went into my private study and took my family crest out of the safe.A few hours later, she handed the crest to a woman wearing a skin mask. That woman had disguised the way she looked and the way she moved. But when she left the estate, she stopped for a moment near a blind spot in the cameras. The investigator pieced the clips together. Finally, he confirmed who she really was.Scarlett.So that was how she did it. She wore a skin mask and slipped into Alex's estate with the maid's help. She used my crest to pose as me. She set it up to look like I was tied to the border ambush, then pinned all of it on me.And there was something I never saw coming.

The second I heard Alex's voice, the ache in my chest got worse."Alex, how did you even find this place? Get out. I don't want to see you."He didn't leave. He just laughed, cold and mean."Rowena, how long are you going to keep this up? So I pushed you that one time. Is that really worth cutting off my card and making me look like an idiot in front of my friends?"I almost laughed out loud.I hadn't even gotten around to settling things with him, and here he was, walking right into it."Alex, don't you always say taking my help is humiliating? Don't you always say I throw my family's money around and don't respect you?"I stared at him. A slow smile pulled at my mouth."Then cutting you off is just me respecting your wishes, isn't it? From now on, whatever you want to buy, whoever you want to take to dinner, use your own money."I paused. Then I let out everything I'd been holding in. "And while we're at it, it's time we added up all the money you've taken from me over the years.""I

"Mom, I'm fine. Really. Look at me. I'm okay, aren't I?""The healer said as long as I change the dressings on time and get some rest, I'll be fine. Please stop crying."I reached up and wiped the tears off my mother's face."Rowena, your father and I have treated you like a treasure since the day you were born. When have you ever been hurt like this?"Her eyes went red all over again as she talked. "If the healer hadn't told us, were you just going to keep this from us forever?""A wound that bad in your chest. Even your heart... What kind of danger did you put yourself in?"I wrapped my arms around her and buried my face in her shoulder."I'm sorry, Mom. I didn't mean to scare you."She held me and stroked my hair, just like when I was little. "Silly girl. You're my daughter. Protecting you is what your father and I are supposed to do.""From now on, whatever happens, you don't carry it alone. Understand? I've already called the family lawyer. Every single person who insulted you tod

Beneath the torn fabric, layers of bandages wound tightly around my chest.Dark, rust-colored bloodstains still clung to the gauze. The wound sat right where the heart should be.The area had caved inward. One look was enough to see that the space where a heart belonged was hollow and empty. The guards and everyone around them stood stunned.Someone stared at my chest and couldn't stop themselves from asking."She doesn't even have a heart. She can barely function like a normal person. How could she have possibly snuck into the estate to steal secrets and then sold intel to an enemy pack?"Just then, a healer rushed over, her expression anxious."Miss Rowena, are you alright? Is the wound causing any discomfort?"I recognized her. She was the dark warlock's friend. She must have already heard about what happened.I frowned slightly and pressed a hand to my chest."It hurts a little."The healer immediately took my hand, worry bleeding through her voice. "I'll notify the warlock right a
