Adrian’s voice cut clean through the tension—cool, measured, and sharp as glass.

“Watch your mouth,”he said, eyes pinned to Mike.“My wife is a married woman.”

Mike let out a harsh, bitter laugh.“Perfect. You’re just in time!”He shoved himself off the floor, ignoring the officers flanking him.“Since you’re here—why don’t you say it to her face?”

He turned, wild-eyed, toward Emily.“Emily, ask him! Ask him if this marriage—if any of it—was ever real.”

His voice rose with every word, tipping toward something unhinged.“Adrian, swear it! Swear this wasn’t all part of your goddamn master plan from the beginning!”

  Emily froze.

The whole room seemed to still around her. Her breath caught halfway, as if her lungs had forgotten how.

She didn’t know why—couldn’t name the exact reason—but something in her chest pulled tight. Not fear of being hurt.

Fear that everything had been fake.

She turned slowly to Adrian, her heart thudding.

But Adrian didn’t look at her.

Adrian cupped her cheek gently, brushing his thumb over the tear still clinging to her skin. “Emily,”he said softly,“I understand now. I know what you’re really afraid of.” He leaned in and kissed the corner of her eye, as if sealing away the fear. “To be honest,”he murmured,“I’m…happy. This wasn’t a result I’d ever factored in.” She blinked at him, caught off guard.“What?” He gave a faint, almost amused exhale.“The thing you’re worried about—I think it’s time I gave you an answer.” Then he stood up and walked out of the room. For a beat, she just sat there, the space where his arms had been still warm. When he returned, he was holding a thick envelope. “Sit,”he said, nodding toward the sofa. She did. He sat beside her, placed the envelope on the coffee table, and slowly began pulling out the documents one by one. “I wanted to give you this the day we got our marriage license,”he said,“but I wasn’t sure you’d accept it. Now, at least, I have a reason.” The

She thought back—not to the day she resigned from A Design, but even earlier. To when Luthmere first announced their tender. She had still been a shareholder then. Still part of the boardroom. And it was that decision—the company’s eagerness to chase the bid at all costs—that drove the first crack between her and Mike. They began to argue, then drift. Late nights replaced conversations. Meetings turned cold. Until one day, she quietly pulled out—both from the company and the relationship that had once seemed inevitable. And now, if what Mike said was true… Vivian hadn’t just met Sienna by accident. It was in a restroom—Sienna had spilled something on Vivian’s outfit, apologized, exchanged contact details. A simple slip. A convenient meeting. Too convenient. Was that moment staged too? Was everything? Her thoughts raced to that night at the bar. Their“reunion.”How strangely unsurprised Adrian had been to see her. Had that not been chance either? Her apartment’s

Her eyes adjusted slowly to the dark.A shape emerged from the shadows—then a face.Mike.Emily’s breath caught. “Are you out of your mind?” she snapped, yanking her arm. “What the hell is this? You tricked me into coming here for this?”“Yes,” Mike said, his voice low and unsteady. “I’m out of my mind. I’m sick. I should’ve snapped the moment I found out you married Adrian. Maybe I did.”He stepped closer, still clutching her wrist. “But every word I’m about to say is the truth. Emily—did you meet Sienna?”She froze. “I don’t know who you’re talking about,” she said sharply. “I’ve never heard that name. Let me go.”His grip tightened, sending a jolt of pain through her arm.“Fine,” he growled. “Let me rephrase. Does Adrian have an aunt who looks way too young to be anyone’s aunt?”Emily stiffened.Something in her mind clicked. A memory. A photo. Her voice wavered. “That picture… it was you? You sent it?”Mike’s eyes darkened. “Damn right I did. And don’t you dare look at me like I’m

The beginning of his affair with Vivian. The unraveling of everything with Emily. The first step onto a path that now felt entirely…orchestrated. And if Sienna was Adrian’s family— Then none of it was coincidence. It had all been a net. A net he’d walked straight into. Mike stood motionless, the muted voices behind the door already fading into a haze. His mind raced. Adrian. Luthmere. Family. He gritted his teeth, fingers curling into fists at his sides. So this was it? Adrian thought that just because his aunt was one of Luthmere’s key insiders, he could rig the entire board? Destroy A Design from the inside out—just because it threatened E International? And then Emily. Mike’s jaw tensed. Was she just part of the collateral damage? Maybe Adrian’s goal had never been about her. Maybe marrying her had just been convenient—just a way to destabilize the company that had become E International’s biggest competitor. Mike’s heart clenched. Or maybe he ha

She broke. It came in a rush of heat and sound, her spine arching, eyes fluttering shut, a cry caught in her throat as everything tipped over the edge. He didn’t let go, didn’t pull away. He held her through it, steady, patient—his name soft against her skin as her body gave in, moment after moment, until she collapsed back into the cushions, boneless and undone. When her trembling eased, he lifted his head, eyes warm, a faint smile tugging at his lips. He slid up beside her, pulling her into his arms, her body limp against his chest. He didn’t say anything—just kissed her forehead, then her hairline, the rhythm of his breathing falling in sync with hers. When he finally rose, he scooped her up gently, one arm beneath her knees, the other steadying her back. She was half-asleep already, face buried against his collarbone, fingers curling instinctively into his shirt as he carried her through the quiet house. In the bedroom, he laid her down carefully, pulling the blanket
