Chapter 3

Author: Aurora
Vivienne immediately shrank behind Cain, trembling like a leaf.

Her eyes were red, her lips quivering. She didn't say a single word — but that look on her face was a hundred times more effective than begging.

Cain didn't even glance at me.

"Ivy, can you stop being so paranoid? Vivienne would never do something like that."

I pointed at the traces of silver powder still on the floor.

"Cain, just look down —"

"Enough."

His voice wasn't loud, but it shut down everything I was about to say.

Vivienne peeked out from behind him, tears clinging to her lashes, looking as innocent as a fawn wrongly accused.

I was shaking all over. But I had no proof — Mira had bolted into the kitchen during the chaos and dumped the entire pouch of silver powder down the drain.

The faint traces on the floor? Cain wouldn't even look.

He put his arm around Vivienne's shoulders and walked out.

That night I sat in the hallway, back against the cold stone wall, turning one thought over and over — he'd been deceived. He didn't know the truth. Once I found evidence, he'd believe me.

Then I heard voices from the next room.

Vivienne's voice, with that coy little lilt at the end.

"Such a waste — you went through so much trouble getting that silver powder from the vampires, and she just had to walk in on us. All of it, gone."

Cain laughed. Soft, careless, like they were talking about nothing.

"It's fine. We'll just be more careful next time."

I sat against the wall, unable to move.

The silver powder was Cain's doing.

He'd known everything from the start.

I thought he'd been blinded. But he'd been perfectly clear-headed the whole time. From the day he married me, I was never his mate — I was an obstacle he needed removed.

In this life, I had no expectations left.

The captain said that when he arrived at the pack estate with the Alpha King's token, Cain was nowhere to be found. The only person there was an Omega servant.

Mira walked over with the captain, barely bothering to hide the smugness on her face.

She glanced down at me lying on the ground, then looked at Alaric beside me.

Alaric had just been pulled back from vampire venom. His armor was half-shattered, the lining soaked in blood, his hair disheveled, his face pale — he looked no different from any wounded warrior.

Mira didn't recognize him.

Her spine straightened immediately.

"Luna, the Alpha asked me to pass along a message — he's gone to the hunting grounds with Vivienne to help her relax. He has no time for your dramatics. If you send anyone to bother him again, he'll go straight to the Elders' Council and have your Luna title stripped. Then you can get out of Shadowfang Pack."

"The Alpha also said he never intended to build a life with you. He only accepted the mate bond to absorb your father Alpha Thomas's pack and his three thousand warriors. Now that Thomas is dead, you don't even have value as a pawn anymore."

I listened to every word, and I was terrifyingly calm.

Because I'd already paid for each one of those truths with my life.

After delivering the message, Mira's gaze drifted to Alaric.

She scoffed.

"Luna, the Alpha's not around so you found yourself some blood-soaked rogue? You think that's going to make the Alpha jealous? He looks at you and feels nothing but disgust. When I go back and tell him you've been cozying up to some random rogue — he'll skin you alive."

She actually reached out and poked Alaric's chest with her finger.

Alaric didn't move.

He simply raised his eyes and looked at Mira. Quiet. Still.

Then he tilted his head slightly.

Two guards stepped forward in unison, one on each side, and forced Mira to the ground.

Her face was pressed into the dirt. She let out a shrill scream.

Alaric's voice was low — calm, even.

"Use silver to kill her wolf. Then banish her beyond the borders. Permanent exile. She is never to set foot in any werewolf territory again."

Vivienne grabbed the truth stone. She knew she was finished. But she wasn't going down alone. She started talking fast, like she was racing against the clock."The silver powder was bought by Cain from the vampire black market. It was a slow-acting poison. Mixed into food over time, it would cause the Luna's wolf and human forms to separate during a shift — killing her in a way that looked like natural death."The stone stayed cool."Cain's plan was to wait until Ivy had the baby, then arrange for her to 'accidentally' die during a shift on a full moon night."The stone stayed cool."The bloodstone evidence against Thomas Pemberton was fabricated by Cain personally. He transferred the transaction records and inventory into the warehouses on Pemberton territory, then reported it under the guise of a routine inspection. The goal was to seize Pemberton Pack's territory and warriors, and to secure an Alpha Council seat for my brother."The stone stayed cool."Cain has mistresses in three d

"Cain Thorne came to Pemberton Pack to ask for my hand. He knelt at our gates for three days and three nights."The older wolves in the square nodded. They remembered."My mother was a Healer formally ordained by the Moon Temple. Her healing lineage is carved into the Temple's stone tablets. She was no heretic. It was not blood magic.""My father, Thomas Pemberton, never colluded with vampires. The so-called bloodstone evidence was planted in Pemberton territory's warehouses from the outside.""Vivienne Holloway directed Mira to lace my food with silver powder. The silver powder came from the vampire black market — purchased by Cain Thorne himself."I finished and opened my palm, facing the entire square.Clean. Not a single burn.Dead silence.Alaric's voice broke it."Cain Thorne. Your turn."Cain walked to the center of the trial platform. He stood before the stone, hand hovering in midair. One second. Two. Three. He finally gripped it."I have never made any deal with vampires —"A

After Alaric left, the tent was silent for a few seconds. Then Cain moved. He walked over, crouched in front of me, and reached for my hand."Ivy, a public trial doesn't help anyone. Think about it — you're my Luna. Everyone in the pack respects you. If this plays out in the square, no matter the outcome, they'll all see the cracks between us. How are you going to lead this pack after that?"He looked up at me, eyes brimming with sincerity."The baby — that was my fault. I'll be better to you. I mean it. We'll try again. I'll find a way to grow another moongrass. Just go tell Alaric to call off the trial. We'll handle this ourselves. Okay?"I pulled my hand away.Cain's expression darkened for a split second. Before he could speak, Vivienne murmured from beside him."Cain, is Ivy still upset with me…"Cain waved her off impatiently, signaling her to be quiet. Then he turned back to me, and the mask of warmth finally cracked."What do you want? This is about Vivienne, isn't it? You just

"Alpha King, Ivy has hated me since the day she married into Shadowfang Pack. She even accused me of poisoning her before and nearly had me thrown out. I know I'm just an Omega — all I do is cause problems for everyone by staying."She paused, as if struggling to hold herself together."I'm willing to leave Shadowfang Pack. Anywhere is fine. I only ask that the Alpha King not blame Cain for what happened tonight — he has never had anything to do with vampires. He only ever treated me like a little sister. Ivy resented him for it, and that's why she made up those lies."She bowed low, her forehead nearly touching the ground. The picture of humility. The old me would have panicked. Every time Vivienne cried, or knelt, or offered to leave, Cain would rush to shield her as if she'd been stabbed — and I'd become the villain.Sure enough, Cain ignited. He whipped around to face me, eyes blazing."Are you done?! How long are you going to keep lying? You won't be satisfied until Vivienne's dea

Alaric saw that Cain's dominance had torn my abdominal wound back open. Blood was seeping through again. His expression changed. He unleashed the Alpha King's dominance — a force on an entirely different level from Cain's. Cain's knees slammed into the ground. He was on all fours, unable to lift his head.Alaric unclasped the cloak from his own shoulders and draped it over me.Then he turned to Cain."You're an Alpha who can't even protect his own pack — you let vampires walk right in. Your mate used the only heirloom her mother left her to draw the venom out of me. She used her own healing power to stabilize my wounds. And then she shielded me with her body and took a vampire's strike.""Where were you?""While she was losing her baby, you were saving the pack's only moongrass to brew tea for an Omega with a scratch."Cain knelt on the ground, shaking.A far cry from the man who'd stood tall and proud accepting the Northern Territory in my past life. But he didn't admit fault. He star

I pushed myself up and pulled back the blanket. My abdomen was flat.Cain's gaze dropped to my belly, and something cracked through the anger on his face."The baby's dead, Cain. Killed by vampires — the same ones that attacked the Alpha King while you were gone."My voice was level, like I was talking about someone else's life."The Alpha King's inspection. You were supposed to be there the entire time."Cain stood frozen. His lips moved. He reached out, fingertips trembling, as if to touch my belly. That was when Vivienne's scream split the air."Cain!"His hand stopped.Vivienne stood just behind the tent flap, one hand over her mouth, the other — still bandaged — pointing at me. She was shaking so hard she could barely stand."How could she… how could she be so heartless… she threw away her own baby for some rogue…"Cain turned to look at her."What rogue?"Vivienne bit her lower lip, putting on a show of reluctance."Cain, I wasn't going to say anything… but Mira just reached me t
