Chapter 3

Author: Zesty Rice
On the day Victor died, Seth refused to let anyone else handle his body. In the end, it was Rita, small and fragile, who carried him on her back for almost 40 miles along the mountain road.

She stood there and watched as his brittle, wasted bones were burned down to nothing but a small handful of ash cupped in her palms.

No one dared risk Seth's anger by offering her a coffin, so in the middle of the night, she buried Victor herself in the rear garden. It was the only way she could give him any kind of peace.

The bodyguards had forced Rita to crawl on her knees. The pain snapped her out of the memory.

It was like someone had scattered gravel and glass shards over the smooth porcelain walkway just to make her suffer. Still, she pushed herself forward as fast as she could.

By the time she reached the rear garden, her knees were already swollen and torn open, leaving a long trail of blood behind her.

Rita's tears spilled down her cheeks the second she saw Victor's urn lying where it had been carelessly thrown. She lunged forward to grab it, forgetting the bodyguards still had her by the arms.

They yanked her back so hard her forehead slammed against the ground, leaving a bruise and making her look like a stray someone had just kicked.

Taking in how pathetic Rita looked, Winnie let out a low laugh and hooked a finger under her chin. Her nails raked across Rita's cheek, tearing the skin and leaving ugly lines.

Then she twisted a fist in Rita's hair and forced her to look up at her.

"Don't blame me for being ruthless. A brother's debt gets paid by his sister. Victor left Tara in a vegetative state, and you stole Seth. I'm just dealing with you for his sake."

Winnie smiled, cold and satisfied. "How about I feed his ashes to the dogs?"

Rita had a rag stuffed in her mouth, so all she could do was thrash and shake her head as hard as she could.

Maybe Winnie decided she was making too much noise. She shot the bodyguards a look.

A second later, they dumped a whole bucket of animal blood over Rita's head. The stench clung to her skin, leaving her looking even worse than a beggar on the street.

Winnie looked even more pleased, raising her brows. "You think you deserve to be Mrs. Jones?"

She let her gaze drag over Rita from head to toe, her slight frown showing just how disgusted she was. "Fighting me for Seth? With your IQ? Please. You're not even worth the trouble."

No one knew which word set Rita off, but something snapped. She fought like hell and managed to break free of the bodyguards. The moment she lunged for Winnie, a sharp crack split the air.

Rita hit the ground hard. Her palm skidded over an old wound and tore it open again. She pressed her hand against the fresh red mark burning across her cheek and looked up in disbelief.

Winnie was already curled in Seth's arms, trembling and crying like she'd just survived something awful. "Seth, thank God you got here. Rita almost killed me."

Seth's eyes went cold, anger gathering in them. He stared at Rita with a hatred that made her shrink even lower.

She struggled to push herself up off the ground, then dropped to her knees at his feet. "Seth, that's Victor. He was your best friend. He's gone now… Please, just let him rest."

Rita stayed on her knees like she couldn't feel a thing. Her skin was torn open, blood spilling onto the gray tiles and pooling into widening puddles.

"You promised you would never hurt me like this."

He was the one who'd held her close, who'd kissed her and whispered "forever" against her skin. He was the one who'd sat by her bed when she was sick and stayed awake all night.

Rita had been stupid to think her small, desperate love could thaw someone as frozen as Seth.

Maybe it was the grief in her eyes that made something like pity flicker across his face. But the moment he saw the redness at the corners of Winnie's eyes, whatever softness he'd left vanished without a trace.

"Seth, the psychic said Rita was bad luck and that anyone who got close to her was bound to get hurt. Even what happened to Tara was because of her."

The words hit Rita so hard she almost lost her balance. She stared at Seth, watching his eyes grow colder, until there was nothing left in her but pure despair.

She started to take off her clothes and begged, "Seth, if you give Victor's ashes back to me, I'll do anything you want."

Watching her give up on herself like that made Seth press his lips into a hard line. A sudden burst of anger shot through him for reasons he couldn't name, sharp enough to lock his jaw.

"Are you really that desperate?" he snapped.

Still, Rita reached for his belt.

Seth shoved her back, forcing the spike of anger down as he leaned into every word. "You're shameless!"

A second later, he flung Victor's ashes into the air. They scattered and disappeared.

Rita collapsed where she was, going limp like her soul had been ripped out, everything inside her going dark.

But then, under everyone's stunned stare, she slowly pushed herself upright and took Seth's hand.

Rita refused to leave Seth with even a shred of hope.Part of her had worried that being this blunt while he was still in the hospital was too harsh, but letting him cling to hope she knew would fall apart on him later felt even crueler. In the end, she just closed her eyes, worn out. "We're finally even now."Seth's eyes were raw and red, grief running so deep she couldn't tell where it ended. "No… I don't want to be even with you. Rita, we've already lost too much in these last three years."Why can't you just give me a chance to win you back? You used to…"Rita had always saved all her favoritism for him, always taking his side. But now she'd handed that privilege over to Evan instead."I know all of this is on me. I can't erase the pain you've lived with these past three years, no matter what I say. But I've been hurting too. Rita, for every rose I inked into your skin, I whipped myself once."Seth let out a bitter smile and lifted the hem of his hospital gown. His back was

Winnie clicked her tongue, annoyed. "Neither of you will be getting out of here. You married me off to some old man, and I bet that made you feel real good, didn't it?"She shot Rita a small, icy smile. "You too. You're going down with me."That was the moment Rita finally understood how terrifying a woman could be when love soured into hate.Winnie strode to a dining table and ripped the tablecloth off with both hands. Pastries and flower arrangements crashed to the floor, and under the table sat a time bomb.Gasps rippled through the room.A chill swept over Rita. "Are you insane?"Winnie let out a wild, bitter smile. "Yeah, I'm insane. You're the ones who drove me to it. All I ever wanted was a comfortable, luxurious life! Why did you have to corner me?"Rita's voice shook. "Winnie, just calm down! None of them had anything to do with this.""In your dreams."Winnie drove her heel into Seth's wound, twisting again and again. She didn't stop until a metallic taste flooded hi

Red welts rushed up on his skin, bright and angry.Still, Rita's heart lurched at the first thing he said."Does your hand hurt, Rita?"Evan glared at him, anger simmering in his eyes. But when he turned to Rita, terrified but still standing in front of him, his gaze softened, and something in his chest loosened. He said coolly, "Seth, this is Pavrielle. The Joneses don't get a say here. Try anything with my fiancée again, and I won't stay nice about it."Seth barely seemed to hear him, his eyes fixed on Rita, a quick flash of hurt passing through them.Rita kept her expression blank and muttered, "Get lost. Everything he just said is exactly what I wanted to say too."Seth swayed like he might go down, the pathetic desperation in his eyes impossible to miss

Winnie stared at Seth, too shocked to think. She grabbed his arm, terror in her voice. "Seth, please tell me you're joking."The fear climbing up her chest wouldn't stop, stretching her voice to a thin thread. "How am I only finding out now that I'm getting married?"Alan Jones, Seth's uncle, had just turned 60. "This was your parents' decision. It had nothing to do with me."In his mind, sending her to marry Alan still felt like letting her off easy.Winnie stayed rooted to the spot, shock and doubt flashing in her eyes. It wasn't supposed to turn out like this. She was supposed to marry Seth.If she hadn't picked the wrong man last time and put her name down as her ex-husband's guaranto

Seth was seconds from pitching into the freezing river when arms locked tight around his waist. He hadn't even noticed Winnie step up behind him.His eyes were blank and glassy as he tried to peel her hands off, but she just held tighter."I didn't fly all the way to Pavrielle to watch you toss your whole life away over some doomed romance. After what you did to Rita, how can you still expect her to love you? Snap out of it, Seth!"I'm right here. Just nod, and I'll stay by you."Seth gave up struggling. A wry smile tugged at his lips while his nails bit into his palms.Moonlight fell over him in broken bands, catching in his eyes and leaving him looking hollowed out. Without Rita's love, he couldn't find a reason to keep going.Winnie hauled him back to firm ground, her voice strained. "Rita's just torturing you, Seth. She's the one who should be setting things right, so why is she pretending she's the victim?"He finally dragged his head up. Under her stunned gaze, he let the

Seth's chest bore the name "Rita Searle", tattooed there in bold letters."Rita, my body and soul have been yours from the very beginning."Rita stood frozen. She stared at his bleeding chest, still shaken by the fact that Tara had just woken up. She had no idea if she should feel happy or heartbroken.Tara had woken up, and everyone else was overjoyed. Everyone but Victor, whose body had vanished without a trace, and Rita, who would never see her parents again.Rita caught the sharp, cool pine on Seth's skin. She was the one who'd mixed that scent for him, but now it made her instinctively pull away. She'd spent what felt like forever picturing Tara waking up, thinking freedom would rush in with it. Instead, it only wrapped tighter around her like a new chain.Maybe cutting things clean was the only way left. After a long, weighted pause, Rita slipped out of Seth's arms, her voice dull as she said, "Congrats, Seth. Looks like you really don't need me anymore." Seth's head sna
