Chapter 3

Penulis: Migo111
Natalie was working late in the study.

At eleven, I brought her a glass of milk.

The door was cracked open.

She was on the phone, using a soft voice I hadn't heard in forever.

"Yeah, get some sleep. We'll talk tomorrow. I miss you too."

She hung up, looked over, and froze when she saw me in the doorway.

"Why aren't you asleep?"

"Do you always talk to your employees like that?"

"I was talking normally. Don't overthink it."

I said nothing.

Just turned and walked away.

A second later, the study door clicked shut.

She'd never closed it before.

I waited twenty minutes.

When she walked into the bedroom and saw I was still awake—

"Natalie, I need to tell you something.

"I have an ability. I've had it since I was a kid. Whenever I touch someone, I see the face of the person they love most."

She stopped halfway through taking off her jacket.

"The first time I touched you, when we were seven, I saw myself.

"When you held my hand at eighteen, I saw myself.

"When you proposed, I saw myself.

"On the morning of our third anniversary, I touched your ankle and saw two faces.

"Mine. And Ryan's."

She stayed quiet for a long time.

Then she laughed.

"You really do have an imagination. Getting bored staying home by yourself?"

"I'm not joking. Every word is true."

Her smile disappeared. "Are you under too much stress? Maybe you should see a doctor."

I stood and took her hand.

"Let me touch you. Right now. Close your eyes and think of one person. I'll tell you who's in your heart."

She pulled her hand back.

Not hard.

Just final.

"Jake Jensen, enough. If you have a problem with Ryan, say it to me. He has a girlfriend. Stop making stuff up. It's not fair to him."

She grabbed her jacket and walked out.

I stood there for a long time, my hand still frozen where hers had been.

***

Natalie came home at two in the morning, smelling like alcohol.

I kept my eyes closed and pretended to be asleep.

She climbed into bed as quietly as she could.

After a while, she slid into my arms.

I closed my eyes.

Only one face appeared.

Ryan's.

Mine was gone.

She pulled my hand around her waist, her breath warm against my ear.

I'd known her for twenty-one years.

For the first time, I wasn't anywhere in her heart.

I gently moved my hand away.

She mumbled, "Don't."

When her breathing evened out, I turned over and faced the other way.

Just before dawn, I got up, packed a small suitcase, and moved into the guest room.

At breakfast, Natalie noticed my slippers outside the door.

"Why'd you sleep in there?"

"Couldn't sleep. Didn't want to keep you up."

She hummed and went back to her phone.

She didn't ask anything else.

Three days after I moved into the guest room, my medical report came back.

There was a growth in my stomach.

The doctor wanted more tests.

I tucked the report into my journal and wrote one line on a blank page.

[When I needed her most, there was no room left for me in her heart.]

I went to Natalie's office.

Downstairs, Ryan was opening the passenger door for her.

She ducked her head and got in.

She used to sit there only when I drove.

Before Ryan got in, he raised a hand to shield her head from the doorframe.

That used to be my thing.

I told the driver, "Take me back."

The medical report pressed against my hand inside my bag.

I never called out to stop them.

***

Natalie came home that evening.

I was waiting in the living room.

"I went to your office today."

She kept changing her shoes.

"Why didn't you come up?"

"If I had, what was I supposed to say?"

She looked at me, irritation creeping across her face. "What's wrong now?"

"I saw you in his passenger seat. I saw him shield your head getting into the car. Just like I used to."

She sighed. "Jake, he's my assistant. Holding the door is basic courtesy. You weren't like this before. You used to be more understanding."

"Understanding? So the things you only did with me, you can do with someone else now, and I'm not supposed to care? If I do, I'm the unreasonable one?"

She rubbed her forehead. "I'm tired. I don't want to argue."

She walked into the study and closed the door.

I used to let a lot of things slide.

Now I was just tired.

On the last night of the exhibition, I stood alone in the center of the gallery.'First Sight' shimmered under the spotlight. On the display card, I'd written one line.[Dedicated to the person I met when I was seven. She lived in my heart for a long time. Then she moved out. Now that room belongs to me.]I stood there for a while, then turned to leave.Outside, it was already dark. The streetlights had just flickered on.In the parking lot, I spotted Natalie's car near the exit. She stood beside it like she'd been there a while.Still in that gray coat.I walked over."Jake.""Yeah.""I saw the exhibition. It was wonderful. I stood in front of that necklace for a long time.""Thank you."After a beat, she spoke again. "Have you been okay this past year?""I have. You?""I'm doing okay."I knew she was lying. She'd lost even more weight. Her cheekbones were sharper, and the light was gone from her eyes. But she'd learned to wear neatly pressed dresses. She'd final

A year later, my solo design show opened. It was called 'Seven.'The collection came from a child's point of view. The curator called it quiet but powerful.A magazine interviewed me and asked about the recurring image of holding hands."It doesn't mean anything. Holding someone's hand is beautiful. But when you can't hold on anymore, you keep walking."After the interview came out, Corey told me Natalie bought a copy of the magazine and kept it on the nightstand—on my old side of the bed.Half her closet was still empty. All her clothes were crammed onto the other side. She refused to put anything where my things used to be.Her assistant said she often sat in her office, staring at her screen. The screen showed our wedding photo."How do you know all this?" I asked Corey."People at the company told me. Her friends are seriously worried. They said she's been a completely different person this whole year.""That's her business."***In November, I went to Southmere to

Corey said a former coworker had seen the whole thing.Natalie called Ryan into her office. The door stayed open, right in front of the whole company."Mr. Leach, effective today, you're fired. Clear out your desk and finish your paperwork by the end of the day."Ryan froze. His eyes went red."Why?""You know why."Ryan started crying. His voice got louder until the whole office could hear.He asked what the beach trip meant. What the tree meant. What that restaurant meant."You said you were going to introduce me to your parents—"Natalie cut him off. "Don't ever show your face around me again."When Corey finished, he looked at me."She really fired him. Everyone said the whole office was stunned.""So?""You really don't feel anything?""What does firing him have to do with me? He was her employee, not mine."The next day, she came to see me.She set a document on my desk.It was Ryan's termination paperwork, signed by him and stamped with the company seal.S

Natalie finally signed the divorce papers. With one condition. She wired me $500,000 and called it compensation for our twenty-one years together.I didn't take it.Then came another request. She wanted to wait three months before the divorce went through, so she could try to win me back. When Corey told me, his voice sounded off."She said she owes you a real courtship. You chased her from age seven to twenty-eight. Now she wants to chase you.""She can do whatever she wants."The flowers showed up the next day.A huge bouquet of red roses blocked the entrance to my studio. The card read:[Day One.]I told the receptionist to send them back.On the third day, another bouquet arrived. The receptionist said she'd already returned the first one, but Natalie had another delivered."What should I do?""Give them to the flower shop next door."The next day, the receptionist passed along a message from the flower shop owner."He said to thank Ms. Dillon. Business has been b

The divorce papers were delivered to her office.I sent them by certified mail.I kept the tracking receipt. She never responded.Corey called. He sounded more anxious than I was."She still hasn't signed?""No.""Did you remind her?""No.""You're really not worried?"I looked out the window. Most of the leaves had already fallen from the linden tree."Corey, the agreement's clear. How long can she put it off?"He was quiet for a moment."I heard she's not doing well. She looks exhausted. She spaces out during meetings, then sits alone in her office until the middle of the night. No one can get her to leave.""That's her problem.""You really don't feel anything for her?"My grip tightened around my phone until my nails dug into my palm."I had surgery. While she was taking pictures of another man at the beach, I was lying alone on an operating table, signing my own consent form. What exactly am I supposed to feel bad about?"The line went dead silent. After a lon

While Natalie was away on a business trip, I went back to collect the rest of my things.I'd already found a new place, packed my boxes, and booked the movers. In three hours, six years were gone.My clothes from the walk-in closet. My books and magazines from the coffee table. The half-finished book from my nightstand. My water glass. My favorite pen.Our marriage license from the drawer. My plate and silverware from the kitchen. The jasmine plant I'd been growing on the balcony.Corey came to help.He stood in the middle of the living room and looked around."You're really leaving all this?""Yeah.""What about the massage chair? You spent months picking that thing out."I looked at it."Too big. Won't fit in the new place."Corey didn't say anything else. Finally, I opened the closet. Her side was still neat and full.Mine held nothing but empty hangers, swaying softly.I left the signed divorce papers on the coffee table. On top, I placed the old bracelet she
