Chapter 2

Author: Migo111
I went to Natalie's office.

In the elevator, I ran into Ryan first.

He recognized me right away and held out his hand with a smile.

"Mr. Jensen, I'm Ryan Leach, Ms. Dillon's assistant."

Calm. Confident. Way too comfortable.

He hit the button for our floor, then stepped back beside me.

Halfway up, he took a call.

"Natalie? She usually skips lunch. Just coffee. She's used to it."

After he hung up, he smiled at me.

"Here to have lunch with Natalie?"

The elevator doors opened.

I didn't answer.

Natalie was in her office, buried in paperwork.

I set the lunch container on her desk.

"You don't eat lunch?"

"Sometimes I get too busy."

Ryan knocked and walked in with a stack of documents.

His eyes flicked to the lunch box, and he smiled.

"That's thoughtful. Natalie said she was craving baked ribs the other day, and you made them."

My hand froze halfway to serving her one.

Natalie kept her head down and ate.

After Ryan left, it was just us.

"He knows you pretty well."

"Who?"

"Mr. Leach. He knows you skip lunch. Knows you only drink coffee."

She set down her fork.

"Jake, he's my assistant. Knowing my work habits is part of his job."

"Is it?"

"What are you thinking now? My heart only has room for you."

She sighed and went back to eating.

That night, she worked until ten.

I brought fruit into the study.

Her phone screen lit up.

Ryan had sent a selfie.

Right in front of me, she flipped the phone facedown.

"It's work."

"I didn't ask."

I set down the fruit and walked out.

My hand stayed on the doorknob for two seconds.

She never called me back.

***

On Sunday, Natalie said she'd make up for our anniversary.

At the restaurant, the hostess smiled.

"Ms. Dillon, your usual table?"

The second booth by the window.

So she'd been here before.

More than once.

After we sat down, I looked at the empty seat across from her.

"Have you brought someone else here?"

She paused while pouring my water.

"Clients. Why?"

"Nothing. It's a nice table."

When she came back from the restroom, she served me a rib.

"Natalie, does it ever feel like someone's between us?"

Her hand stopped for half a second as she cut the steak.

Then she kept going.

"Who? Why ask that out of nowhere?"

"Nothing. Just wondering."

She placed the steak on my plate.

After dinner, her phone lit up.

She angled away to reply.

From the corner of my eye, I caught the screen.

[Natalie, see you tomorrow.]

She sent back a sticker.

Then she locked her phone and took my hand.

"Let's go."

She led me forward.

I looked down at our hands.

Our fingers were still intertwined.

Under the streetlights, our shadows stretched across the sidewalk, one behind the other.

I thought back to the first time she held my hand like that.

We were eighteen.

Back then, every time I closed my eyes, I saw only my own face in her heart.

Now, I closed my eyes and brushed my fingers over her wrist.

The same two faces appeared.

Mine.

Ryan's.

Neither one was winning.

Natalie looked back at me.

"Why'd you stop?"

"Nothing."

I caught up.

She squeezed my hand.

It felt natural.

Just like it always had.

But I knew.

Nothing was the same anymore.

On the last night of the exhibition, I stood alone in the center of the gallery.'First Sight' shimmered under the spotlight. On the display card, I'd written one line.[Dedicated to the person I met when I was seven. She lived in my heart for a long time. Then she moved out. Now that room belongs to me.]I stood there for a while, then turned to leave.Outside, it was already dark. The streetlights had just flickered on.In the parking lot, I spotted Natalie's car near the exit. She stood beside it like she'd been there a while.Still in that gray coat.I walked over."Jake.""Yeah.""I saw the exhibition. It was wonderful. I stood in front of that necklace for a long time.""Thank you."After a beat, she spoke again. "Have you been okay this past year?""I have. You?""I'm doing okay."I knew she was lying. She'd lost even more weight. Her cheekbones were sharper, and the light was gone from her eyes. But she'd learned to wear neatly pressed dresses. She'd final

A year later, my solo design show opened. It was called 'Seven.'The collection came from a child's point of view. The curator called it quiet but powerful.A magazine interviewed me and asked about the recurring image of holding hands."It doesn't mean anything. Holding someone's hand is beautiful. But when you can't hold on anymore, you keep walking."After the interview came out, Corey told me Natalie bought a copy of the magazine and kept it on the nightstand—on my old side of the bed.Half her closet was still empty. All her clothes were crammed onto the other side. She refused to put anything where my things used to be.Her assistant said she often sat in her office, staring at her screen. The screen showed our wedding photo."How do you know all this?" I asked Corey."People at the company told me. Her friends are seriously worried. They said she's been a completely different person this whole year.""That's her business."***In November, I went to Southmere to

Corey said a former coworker had seen the whole thing.Natalie called Ryan into her office. The door stayed open, right in front of the whole company."Mr. Leach, effective today, you're fired. Clear out your desk and finish your paperwork by the end of the day."Ryan froze. His eyes went red."Why?""You know why."Ryan started crying. His voice got louder until the whole office could hear.He asked what the beach trip meant. What the tree meant. What that restaurant meant."You said you were going to introduce me to your parents—"Natalie cut him off. "Don't ever show your face around me again."When Corey finished, he looked at me."She really fired him. Everyone said the whole office was stunned.""So?""You really don't feel anything?""What does firing him have to do with me? He was her employee, not mine."The next day, she came to see me.She set a document on my desk.It was Ryan's termination paperwork, signed by him and stamped with the company seal.S

Natalie finally signed the divorce papers. With one condition. She wired me $500,000 and called it compensation for our twenty-one years together.I didn't take it.Then came another request. She wanted to wait three months before the divorce went through, so she could try to win me back. When Corey told me, his voice sounded off."She said she owes you a real courtship. You chased her from age seven to twenty-eight. Now she wants to chase you.""She can do whatever she wants."The flowers showed up the next day.A huge bouquet of red roses blocked the entrance to my studio. The card read:[Day One.]I told the receptionist to send them back.On the third day, another bouquet arrived. The divorce papers were delivered to her office.I sent them by certified mail.I kept the tracking receipt. She never responded.Corey called. He sounded more anxious than I was."She still hasn't signed?""No.""Did you remind her?""No.""You're really not worried?"I looked out the window. Most of the leaves had already fallen from the linden tree."Corey, the agreement's clear. How long can she put it off?"He was quiet for a moment."I heard she's not doing well. She looks exhausted. She spaces out during meetings, then sits alone in her office until the middle of the night. No one can get her to leave.""That's her problem.""You really don't feel anything for her?"My grip tightened around my phone until my nails dug into my palm."I had surgery. While she was taking pictures of another man at the beach, I was lying alone on an operating table, signing my own consent form. While Natalie was away on a business trip, I went back to collect the rest of my things.I'd already found a new place, packed my boxes, and booked the movers. In three hours, six years were gone.My clothes from the walk-in closet. My books and magazines from the coffee table. The half-finished book from my nightstand. My water glass. My favorite pen.Our marriage license from the drawer. My plate and silverware from the kitchen. The jasmine plant I'd been growing on the balcony.Corey came to help.He stood in the middle of the living room and looked around."You're really leaving all this?""Yeah.""What about the massage chair?
