Chapter 7

Author: Stars
The banquet ended.

Sophie wanted to take me to her place to thank me properly.

She was sweet, but sorry. She wasn't the one I was trying to win over.

Just as I was scrambling for an excuse to decline, Soren pulled up in his car.

"Get in. I'll drive you home."

I clung to the lifeline, quickly said goodbye to Sophie, and climbed into Soren's car.

The whole ride, Soren didn't say a word. He just drove fast.

It wasn't until we were nearly at my place that the words he'd been holding back finally came out.

"Why did you perform magic for Sophie?"

He kept looking at me.

"Doesn't it bother you, me and her?"

The barrage appeared before my eyes with instructions.

[This is your chance to show how thoughtful and understanding you are.]

Thoughtful and understanding?

I could do that.

I looked into Soren's eyes and said, "I know you care about her. If making her happy makes you happy, then I'm willing to help."

Soren slammed the brakes so hard he nearly hit a utility pole.

He stared at me as if he'd been struck by lightning.

After a long, stammering pause, he managed to get out a single sentence.

"Are you out of your mind?"

The streetlight filtered through the car window and fell across his face. Seeing the faint blush on his earlobes, I knew I'd said the right thing again.

"I don't even like her that much. She just grew up with me. I've always thought of her as a little sister."

Soren tried his best to sound casual.

"Is there anything you want?"

"What do you mean?"

"Like a gift... Don't get the wrong idea. I just feel bad that you had to deal with all that for nothing."

Soren had given me plenty of gifts before, and none of them were cheap.

The moonstone earrings he'd given me, for instance. When I looked them up afterward, they were worth over six hundred thousand dollars.

I really couldn't accept anything else from him.

But the barrage kept urging me.

[This is your chance. It'll bring you two closer. You have to seize it.]

[This could be your token of love.]

I thought for a moment, then looked at Soren.

"Anything at all?"

Soren nodded with total confidence, as if there was nothing in the world he couldn't afford.

"Could you take Goldie back? He'll be so lonely without his dad."

Soren stiffened.

"That's all you want?"

I nodded. "He's one of the few excuses I have to come see you."

He turned his face away. The blush on his earlobes deepened.

"Is that okay?" I asked.

"Fine."

I broke into a smile. "Thank you!"

The car was so quiet I could hear his heartbeat growing faster and faster.

The car pulled smoothly to a stop at my front door.

As I got out, I heard him clear his throat softly. "If you want to see me, you can come anytime. You don't need an excuse."

My eyes lit up.

"Really?"

He gave a small nod.

I beamed at him.

"That's wonderful!"

Soren's face was bright red, but even so, he clung stubbornly to his rule of flirting but never dating.

He stammered.

"I... only said you could come see me. I never said I'd date you. I'm... never taking a mate."

After saying it, he looked at me with something almost like anticipation.

I knew that sentence was his way of warning me not to get my hopes up.

I nodded firmly.

"Got it. I won't date you."

But for some reason, the light in his eyes dimmed.

He seemed almost angry, deliberately hardening his tone. "That's right. Don't even think about dating me. Don't even dream about it."

With that, he floored the gas and sped away.

Living with an Alpha was like living with a tiger.

His mind was impossible to read.

Half of Soren's face was hidden in shadow. I looked at the red tips of his ears and asked him a question."How did you find me?"He didn't answer. He just stared at me.Then warmth pressed against my lips.My mind went blank. All I could see was the barrage detonating in a frenzy.[Oh my god, they're kissing, they're kissing!][Should I even be watching this?][I knew it. Soren fell for her ages ago. He was just too stubborn to admit it.]Soren's fingers threaded through my hair, cradling my face and the curve of my ears. The world fell silent. The only sound was our heartbeats. When the kiss ended, Soren pulled back. His voice was hoarse."When I couldn't reach you, that's when I realized how terrified I was."He looked at me, a trace of hurt in his voice."And that's when I knew I can't live without you."But, but..."He paused for a moment, then went on."You said you liked me first. So why did you tell someone else you didn't have feelings for anyone?"His arm tightened around my w

But before I could fully grasp the meaning behind Soren's words, the dinner ended on an awkward note.On the walk home, a dark mood hung over me.I couldn't quite figure out what was wrong with me.While I was lost in thought, someone grabbed me from behind and pressed a cloth over my nose and mouth.A sharp, acrid smell flooded my senses.By the time I realized it was wolfsbane, it was too late.My eyes closed, and I sank into unconsciousness. When I opened my eyes again, I was in an abandoned factory. It was pitch black. Not a soul in sight. The only sound was the scrape of a knife being sharpened, echoing through the cavernous space.I was trussed up on the floor, unable to move. That was when it hit me. I'd been kidnapped. The sharpening stopped abruptly.Footsteps drew closer.I squeezed my eyes shut and pretended to be asleep. The footsteps stopped right beside me.I could feel the malice radiating from the person standing over me.A voice came from above. "You wicked witch. Die!

At the most upscale restaurant in the pack.Soren, having just paid the bill, gave the rest of us a look of deep betrayal."You all said 'our treat.' How did I end up being the only one paying?"Sophie winced and stuck out her tongue. "How was I supposed to know you'd pick this place? A single dish here costs my entire month's salary. There's no way I could cover it."Callum stirred his coffee unhurriedly. "I'm a guest in your territory. It wouldn't be proper for a guest to foot the bill."Soren had ordered an extra strawberry sundae specifically for me.A small gesture, but favoritism plain as day.I realized it must have been something I'd said that had gotten to Soren. His sudden kindness made me a little nervous. But beyond the nerves, there was something else.Being someone's favorite for the very first time felt wonderful.Halfway through the meal, Sophie suddenly remembered that today was the day she and Callum were supposed to fly back to their pack. And their flight was in les

I was puzzled. My apartment rarely got any visitors at all.Yet today they were showing up like they'd coordinated in advance.I opened the door, and before I could even see who it was, someone threw their arms around my neck. Then Sophie's tearful voice rang in my ear."Keira, you've been going through so much..."The bear hug came out of nowhere, and I was completely bewildered.Sophie continued through her tears. "I made ten accounts and went at them in the comments section. The only reason I stopped was because I got too heated and all my accounts got banned. Otherwise I would've made twenty more.""Soren shut down a bunch of news outlets to suppress the story, but even that wasn't enough."That was when I noticed someone standing behind Sophie.I blinked. It was Soren. He looked worn and haggard, dark circles prominent under his eyes. He had clearly been running himself ragged over this.So during all those days when the online mob had been coming for me, I hadn't been bearing it

The comment caused a firestorm. Other users piled on.Rumors that I was a witch spread like wildfire.Even though the posts had been mysteriously suppressed on the first day, that only seemed to confirm the rumors' credibility.[Terrifying. A witch disguised as a werewolf, infiltrating a pack.][I heard she's close to the Alpha. What if she's trying to steal pack secrets?][Run her out of the pack. Or burn her at the stake.]The online mob grew more vicious by the day.I was afraid to leave the house, terrified someone might recognize me.Even the barrage was worried about my situation.[Maybe you should ask Soren for help. He's the Alpha. He'll know what to do.]But things between us had been so strained lately. With all this happening on top of it, I didn't know if Soren would take my side.I stared at my phone, debating whether to call him.Honestly, the online harassment didn't scare me. I brought him to a well.I told him to close his eyes and picture the person he longed to see. Then I chanted a spell, and the still water began to ripple. When Callum opened his eyes, a beautiful woman gazed up at him from the water's surface. She smiled at him, gentle and warm, her lips trembling slightly as though calling his name.It was the person he'd dreamed of seeing. In that moment, his eyes glistened with tears. He reached out to touch her, but an illusion was still an illusion. The instant his fingers broke the surface, her image scattered like foam."I'm sorry. In the end, it's only an illusion," I said gently. He shook his head. "It's alright. Just being able to see her again means more than I can say."I nodded. In my past life, I'd used witchcraft for terrible things.Anyone who came to me, as long as they offered the right price, got whatever they asked for, even if it meant helping the wicked. But in this second life, I seemed to have found another use for witchcraft.
