Chapter 3

Author: River Ridge
[There’s one spot left. We leave in seven days. Can you make it?]

I was about to reply when Jared suddenly knocked the phone out of my hand.

“Kaitlyn, do you have any idea what your life is actually like? You’re disabled. So what if you can hear a little now? You still can’t speak.

“Do you really think you could make it without me? I’m the only person who doesn’t disdain your defects. Anyone else would find being with you too much trouble.

“Just because I’ve put up with everything doesn’t mean you get to push me as far as you want. Without me, no one’s going to stand up for you when people treat you any less because of your disability.”

His face was dark with anger. He did not even bother signing anymore.

My hearing was still recovering. I could only hear relentless ringing.

I struggled to read his lips. Every word I managed to make out cut into me all over again.

For years, I had refused surgery that could restore some of my hearing because I never wanted to hear that kind of cruelty coming straight from someone’s mouth.

When I had slipped his engagement ring onto my finger, he had been the last person I expected to hear such words from.

“Stand up for me? You were the one who said having a kid like me would be a nightmare. You were the one mocking me with your friends. Jared, do you really love me?”

When he loved me, even on a packed subway, he would sign to me about every funny little thing that had happened that day without a care of who was watching.

He had only just started learning sign language back then. His movements had been slow and clumsy, but he would deliberately exaggerate every expression on his face, just to make me smile.

Back then, I thought I finally understood how love could make itself heard even in a world without sound.

However, at that moment, he was using the trust I had given him to hurt me in ways no one else could.

Something seemed to occur to Jared. He froze for a moment.

He quickly composed himself again and looked at me as though I were a child throwing a tantrum over nothing.

“Kaitlyn, can you stop making such a big deal out of this? It was just a couple of stupid jokes. Everyone else says things like that, but it’s unforgivable when I do?

“You’ve been unable to speak for years. You can’t be this sensitive every time someone jokes about it. Naomi’s pregnancy was an accident. We were drunk that night.

“She’s allergic to latex, so we couldn’t use condoms, and afterward she forgot to take the morning-after pill. That’s all it was. Naomi’s health is fragile, so ending the pregnancy isn’t an option.

“When I said I would make it legal with her, I only meant so the baby would have two legal parents. It won’t change anything between us.

“As for you, I’ve been making sure you take birth control this whole time. How could you possibly be pregnant? Even if an accident happened, something would probably go wrong with the baby.

“Add your disability into the mix, would you really want to keep it?”

My hand froze where it rested over my stomach.

“You’ve been giving me birth control?”

Jared avoided my gaze. “I’ve been mixing it in with your daily supplements.”

Ever since we first slept together, he had always prepared my pills for me.

Each little pill box was decorated with silly cartoons and labeled with the names of different vitamins and supplements.

The pills tasted bitter, but I never questioned them because I thought he was taking care of me.

I finally realized that all that supposed care had been nothing but control.

“This was the only way I could make marrying you work, Kaitlyn. I did it for us.”

He reached out to pull me into his arms, but I stepped away.

“Given your situation, I’m as good as you’re ever going to get. Stop being difficult, Kaitlyn. You don’t have other options. Go home and get some rest. I’ll come get you in a week for our wedding.”

After Jared left, I picked up my phone from the floor.

The screen was cracked, but it was still on.

I tapped out the words with steady hands.

[Yes, Professor.]

Then, I hit send.

Who said I could not make it without him?

I had the whole world ahead of me.

For the next three months, Jared stayed in Northreach. He walked with me to work in the mornings, showed up outside the school at lunch just to see me, and waited to walk home with me again in the evenings. Most of the time, Skylar was there too.The three of us made an awkward little trio. Then, one night, Jared got drunk and came knocking on my door.It was already late. I did not want him disturbing the neighbors, so I had no choice but to open the door.He looked devastated.“Kaitlyn, you’re really done with me for good, aren’t you? I’m not getting another chance, am I? Even if I change, even if I spend the rest of my life trying to make up for everything, it still won’t matter anymore, will it?”I was quiet for a moment, then nodded. “Jared, don’t make me regret ever choosing you. Let this end with some dignity. I want to be able to look back on those years and remember that there was something good in them too.”Tears slipped down Jared’s face as he pulled me into his

“I know you were just saying that to get Jared off my back. Thank you.”Skylar sighed. “I meant every word I said. What part of what I said sounded insincere to you? That you’re an incredible woman? Or that I’m interested in you?“Kaitlyn, I never told you how I felt because I didn’t want to put that kind of pressure on you. But you never have to feel guilty about using me. I’d gladly be there whenever you need me.”My fingers curled slightly. “You have plenty of options. We aren’t right for each other.” “All right. Go get ready for your next class. I’ll come by after work and take you home.”I sighed with resignation. When I first saw him among the medical volunteers in Northreach, I was stunned. I had signed to ask what he was doing all the way out there. He nodded solemnly and deliberately pretended to misunderstand me.“Yeah, I’m getting a little tired too.”Then, he promptly rested his head on my shoulder and closed his eyes.A month later, I learned that he had come be

As soon as class ended, the principal, Johnson Dewey, appeared at the classroom door and waved me over with a smile.I walked out carrying my books. Johnson greeted me cheerfully.“Ms. Dever, your fiance is here to see you.”I frowned and signed to him, “Mr. Dewey, I’m single. I don’t have a fiance.”Johnson stopped short, looking thoroughly confused. “But his phone is full of pictures of you two. He even showed me the video of his proposal.”That was all I needed to hear.Sure enough, Jared was standing across the schoolyard, waving at me.He was dressed in a suit. One hand was hidden behind his back. I could just make out flashes of red peeking out from behind him.I was not surprised that he had come, but I still found his presence exhausting. When I reached him and opened my mouth to say something, he dropped to one knee and held out the bouquet of red roses he had been hiding behind his back.“Kaitlyn, I’m sorry. I know I hurt you. That’s why I’m here to ask you this aga

Jared called everyone he could think of and drove all over the city in the plain car that was supposed to have been part of their wedding. He retraced every place he and Kaitlyn had once gone together. The subway, their favorite cafe, the park. There was no sign of her anywhere. He could not stop wondering where she had gone, or how far away she might already be from the city where they had built so many memories together.Neither could he stop himself from imagining what she must have been feeling, and how long she had been quietly planning to leave him.One memory after another came back to him. With each one, the numbness in his body gave way to a sickening ache.He did not want to remember the things he had said at the party that night. She had heard him slander, belittle, and mock her.She had watched him betray her with Naomi while pregnant with their child.Jared finally understood just how completely he had broken her heart.Jared rode the subway all the way to the fi

(3rd POV)For some reason, Jared had struggled to sleep well all night. At the first hint of dawn, he wanted to get out of bed.Naomi wrapped her arms around him. “Stay in bed with me and the baby a little longer.”Whenever she brought the baby into it, Jared never seemed to know how to say no.So, he lay back down. It was supposed to be his wedding with Kaitlyn, but there would be no family members there, only some close friends.Jared’s parents had never wanted him to marry Kaitlyn in the first place. When they found out Naomi was pregnant, they became even more firmly opposed to it.With no support from his parents and no relatives willing to celebrate with them, Jared could only invite a few of his closest friends. What was supposed to be a wedding had been reduced to little more than a make-believe ceremony. However, he had never told Kaitlyn any of that.As far as he was concerned, as long as he gave Kaitlyn a wedding, he had kept his promise to her.By the time Jared

The next day, I went to a different hospital to terminate the pregnancy. The doctor spent a long time going over my test results.“Ms. Dever, although you were born deaf and mute, your test results show that your condition is not an inherited genetic defect. We can rule out the possibility of your baby inheriting it.“Knowing that, are you still sure you want to end the pregnancy?”My eyes filled with tears. “I can’t keep the baby. Before I knew I was pregnant, I’d been taking a lot of medication.”The doctor sighed.“Ms. Dever, given your medical history, you need to understand that ending this pregnancy may mean you are never able to conceive again.”I nodded silently. I checked the box confirming that I understood the risks and signed the consent form. The procedure seemed to last forever.I lay there and felt the tiny life inside me slowly slip away. After I was moved to the recovery room, I received a video on my phone.Naomi and Jared were in it.“Naomi, this hospital
