Chapter 2

作者: Migo111
When I dropped by the company to see Dominic, I ran into Tiana in the elevator.

Tiana recognized me and offered her hand to me with a smile. "Nice to meet you, Mrs. Hatterson. I'm Mr. Hatterson's assistant, Tiana Ashford," she said openly and naturally.

She pressed one of the buttons before taking a step back to stand next to me. A few seconds later, she received a call.

"Dom? He usually skips lunch and just has a cup of coffee. He's used to it."

After ending the call, Tiana smiled at me. "Are you here to have lunch with Dom, Mrs. Hatterson?"

The elevator doors slid open. I didn't answer.

When I entered Dominic's office, he was flipping through a document. He didn't even bother to look up.

I placed the insulated food container on his desk and asked, "You don't eat lunch anymore?"

"I skip it sometimes when I'm too busy," he replied.

Tiana knocked on the door and entered the office to deliver a document to Dominic. When she noticed the food container, she smiled and said, "You're so thoughtful, Mrs. Hatterson. You immediately made braised ribs for Dom after he mentioned craving them last time."

My hand froze in midair just as I was about to serve the braised ribs to Dominic.

Dominic kept his head down as he ate. He didn't lift his head.

Eventually, Tiana left, leaving the two of us alone in the office.

"She knows you quite well," I said.

"Who?" Dominic asked.

"Ms. Ashford. She knows that you skip lunch and only have coffee."

Dominic placed his fork down. "She's my assistant, Cassandra. Understanding my work habits is part of her job."

"Is that so?"

"What are you thinking about now? You're the only one in my heart," Dominic said with a sigh as he kept his head down and continued eating.

That night, Dominic worked late until 10:00 pm.

When I dropped by the study to deliver a plate of fruit to him, I noticed that his phone screen was lit up. Tiana had sent him a selfie.

Right in front of me, Dominic turned the phone over and placed it face down on the desk. "It's a work-related issue," he said.

"I didn't ask."

I set the plate of fruits on the desk and left the study. My hand lingered on the doorknob for two seconds, but Dominic didn't call out to me.

Dominic had promised to make it up to me on Sunday for missing our wedding anniversary.

The waiter led us to a table when we arrived at the restaurant. "The usual table, Mr. Hatterson?" he asked with a smile.

He led us to the second booth by the window, making it clear that it wasn't Dominic's first time at the restaurant.

I stared at the empty seat opposite me after I sat down, asking, "Have you taken others here before?"

Dominic's hand froze for a moment as he poured a glass of water for me. "I took one of my clients here. Why?"

"Nothing. It's just that this is a really good spot."

Dominic left to use the restroom. When he returned, he served some braised ribs to me.

"Dominic, have you noticed that there seems to be another person between us now?"

His hands froze for a moment as he peeled a shrimp. He recovered a few seconds later and continued peeling. "Who? Why would you suddenly say that?"

"It's nothing. I was just asking."

Dominic placed the peeled shrimp on my plate.

Dominic's phone lit up after dinner was over. He shifted his body to the side to reply to the message, but I managed to catch a glimpse of his screen from the corner of my eye.

The message was from Tiana.

"See you tomorrow, Dom."

Dominic replied with an emoji before locking his screen and taking my hand. "Let's go."

As he led me out of the restaurant, I looked down at our joined hands.

The streetlights shone on us, casting our shadows on the ground. My shadow trailed after Dominic's.

I suddenly recalled how Dominic had held my hand for the first time when I was 18 years old. My heart had been filled with nothing but him at the time when I closed my eyes.

I closed my eyes and touched his wrist. There were still two faces. One of them belonged to me while the other belonged to Tiana. Our faces were split into perfect halves.

Dominic turned to look at me, asking me why I had stopped walking.

"Let's go," I said.

He held my hand tightly when I caught up to him. He took my hand as if it were the most natural thing in the world, just like before.

But I knew that everything had changed.

  • I See the Face He Truly Loves   Chapter 11

On the evening of the final day of the exhibition, I stood in the middle of the exhibition hall by myself."First Meeting" glimmered under the spotlights. I had written a short note on the display plaque of the necklace."Dedicated to the person I met when I was seven years old. He took up residence in my heart for a long time, but he eventually moved away. I'm the one who remains in the house now."I turned and left the hall after standing before the necklace for a long time. The sky had already darkened, and the streetlights were starting to turn on.From a distance, I saw Dominic's car at the entrance of the parking lot. He stood next to my car, looking like he had been waiting for a long time. He was still wearing the same gray coat.I approached him."Cassandra."I hummed in response."I visited your exhibition. You did a wonderful job. I looked at that necklace for a long time.""Thank you."Dominic fell silent for a few moments before he spoke again. "Have you been

A year later, I hosted my solo design exhibition. The exhibition was titled "Seven Years Old". The pieces were inspired by the idea of looking at the world through the eyes of a child. The curator told me that my creations were gentle yet powerful.A magazine team dropped by to interview me, asking me about the symbolism behind holding hands."There isn't really a symbolic meaning," I explained. "Having someone to hold hands with is a good thing, but if you don't have someone like that, you'll just have to move forward by yourself."After the interview was published, Michelle informed me that Dominic had purchased a copy of the magazine and placed it on his bedside table. He even placed it on the side where I used to sleep. His closet was left half-empty. His clothes were shoved to one side while the other side remained empty. His assistant also mentioned that he kept spacing out when he sat in front of his computer. The wallpaper was our wedding portrait.I asked Michelle how s

Michelle told me that her former colleague, Xavier Chesterfield, had personally witnessed Dominic firing Tiana.Dominic had summoned Tiana to his office. The door had been left open, so everyone in the office got front-row seats to the drama unfolding inside."You are relieved of your duties as of today, Ms. Ashford," Dominic said. "Please complete the resignation procedures before the end of the day."Tiana was stunned. Her eyes immediately reddened as she asked Dominic why he was firing her."You know why," was Dominic's response.Tiana began crying. Her voice got louder and louder until everyone in the office could hear her. She demanded answers from him, asking if the beach, the maple tree, and the restaurant meant anything to him. She also said that he had promised to take her to meet his parents.Dominic interrupted her, saying, "Never show your face in front of me again."Michelle looked at me after she was done telling the story."He really fired her. Xavier said that e

Dominic finally signed the divorce agreement. He added an additional clause, stating that he would transfer five million dollars to me as compensation for the last 21 years.I refused the money. He also made another request, which was to give him three months before he submitted the divorce agreement for processing. He wanted to pursue me again.Michelle sounded conflicted when she passed Dominic's message to me."He said he owed it to you to properly pursue you. You were always the one chasing after him in the past. You chased after him from when you were seven until you were 28, so now it's his turn to chase after you.""He can do whatever he wants," I said.…The flowers showed up the next day.A massive bouquet of red roses was left at the entrance of my studio, blocking the doorway. The message on the card read, "Day One."I told the receptionist to return the bouquet.Another bouquet was delivered the next day.The receptionist informed me that Dominic had instructed

I mailed the divorce agreement to Dominic's company. I used registered mail and saved the tracking number, but I didn't receive any response from him.Michelle sounded even more anxious than me when she called me to ask for an update."He hasn't signed it yet?" she asked. "No.""Did you rush him?""No.""Aren't you even a little impatient to get it over with?"I looked at the maple tree outside the window. It had nearly lost all of its leaves."The terms are stated clearly in the agreement, Michelle. How many more days can he delay the inevitable?"Michelle fell silent for a moment. "I heard from Xavier that he's been in a slump," she said in a hushed voice. "He hasn't shaved, and he's always distracted during meetings. He stays in the office until the middle of the night and refuses to leave, no matter who tries to convince him to go home.""That's his problem.""You don't feel sorry for him at all?"I gripped my phone, digging my nails into my palm. "I had a miscarriag

Taking advantage of Dominic being away on a business trip, I moved all my belongings out of our home.I had secured a new place for myself beforehand. I packed all my belongings into boxes and hired a moving company. It only took three hours for me to clean up six years' worth of memories.I took everything that belonged to me: my clothes in the closet, the different bottles on the vanity, the half-read book on the bedside cabinet, my cups, and my hair clips.I also took the marriage certificate from the drawer, the apron I had bought in the kitchen, my bowls, plates, and utensils, as well as the potted jasmine that I had been taking care of on the balcony.Michelle came with me to help with the move. She stood in the living room and spun in a circle. "What about the rest?" she asked. "I don't want them anymore," I replied. "Even the couch? You spent six months choosing that one.""It's too big. It won't fit in my new place," I said as I looked at the couch.Michelle didn't
