Chapter 1

After dinner, I went to the coat room to retrieve my coat.

As soon as I picked it up, I realized something was wrong.

Upon closer inspection, I realized the clothes in my hands were not mine.

I had also lost a small clutch.

It contained my car keys and ID.

Since both items were quite valuable, I hurried to report the situation to a staff member.

The staff member reassured me that someone might have taken the wrong coat by mistake.

The restaurant had real-time surveillance.

So, it should not be hard to track down the person who took my coat.

I waited all day.

Finally, I received a message from the restaurant.

They had found the person.

It was a middle-aged woman in her fifties named Molly Clark.

The surveillance footage showed that she took my coat half an hour after I entered the restaurant.

She had examined it carefully before taking it.

My clutch was also neatly placed right next to it.

I could not figure out why this Molly Clark would have taken the wrong one.

Then, I eagerly called her.

“Hello, Ms. Clark, I’m the customer who dined at the same restaurant as you three days ago. When you left, you took my coat by mistake.

“How about this? Let’s add each other on WhatsApp so we can figure out how to exchange the items back.”

There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Then, she denied it.

“Coat? What coat? I didn’t take your coat. You have the wrong number.”

Before I could say another word, she had already hung up.

As I listened to the busy signal coming from my phone, I felt a bit frustrated.

Did this person have no eyes? It had already been three days. Yet she still had not realized she had taken the wrong coat.

I called back, but she was not picking up.

Staring at the “unreachable” message, I took a deep breath.

Even if she did it on purpose, my coat was still in her possession.

I should try to communicate with her first, if possible.

I forced myself to calm down and called back from my spare phone. “Ms. Clark, I didn’t dial the wrong number. You were having dinner at the restaurant on the second floor of Joy Mall yesterday at 5 p.m., right?

“If you don’t believe me, just take out your coat and check. Also, that clutch that was with it isn’t yours either. Neither the coat nor the clutch belongs to you. As long as you give them back, I won’t hold it against you.”

To my surprise, Molly was not having any of it and immediately launched into a tirade.

“Are you out of your mind? I said I didn’t take the wrong items, and I didn’t. That’s my coat. Are you so poor you have to steal other people’s clothes?”

Her unwarranted insults made me so furious I felt like I was about to burst into flames.

Just as I was about to snap back, she blocked my number again.

I had no choice but to borrow a friend’s phone and text her again.

“I have surveillance footage on my phone showing you taking my coat. If you don’t return it, we’ll see each other at the police station.”

About ten minutes later, I received a friend request on WhatsApp. It read [Molly Clark].

As soon as I accepted it, she asked if I had called the police.

After I told her I had not, she said she had not seen clearly at the time and had taken the wrong clutch.

She offered to mail the clutch back to me. As for the coat, she had already washed it. So, she told me to take her jacket as compensation.

I was so furious that I was shaking all over. So, I immediately called her back via WhatsApp.

The case proceeded smoothly.Molly was charged with theft, fraud, and defamation. She received a combined sentence of thirteen years for multiple offenses. As for the money she owed me, after three unsuccessful attempts to collect it, I filed a petition with the court for compulsory enforcement.I repossessed her house. The matter was settled, and everything had come to a close. That was until a month after Molly was locked up.I was knocked unconscious and shoved into an unmarked car. When I came to, I was lying on a cold floor, tightly bound and unable to move a muscle.A slightly hoarse male voice reached my ears.“Little girl, you’re awake.”I turned my head and saw a middle-aged man with a buzz cut playing with his phone. As I watched his clumsy movements, a vague suspicion began to form in my mind.Perhaps because I remained too calm, the middle-aged man grinned and wiped his hand across my face.“You’re really brave. You didn’t even cry from fear.”I fought back my

The police officers gave her a speechless look. Then, they simply pushed her back into her seat.My lawyer, Mr. Miller, who was behind me, laid the documents in front of Molly and said sternly, “Ms. Clark, let me remind you that you are currently suspected of a criminal offense. “The compensation for property damage is 350,000 dollars, and the compensation for emotional distress is 30,000 dollars. “It adds up to a total of 380,000 dollars. This must be settled in full on the spot before we’ll even consider issuing a statement to forgive you.”Molly’s voice rose instantly. She grabbed the documents on the table, tore them to shreds, and flung them in my face. “380,000 dollars? You just say whatever number you want! You little wench, you don’t even know how to pick your victims when you’re trying to extort money. “I’ve only got 5,000 dollars that I can access on my phone right now. Take it or leave it!“What a load of nonsense about a statement to forgive! I don’t want it! “

Following the trail, I discovered that the employee who had reviewed the financial aid list back then was actually Emma’s uncle. The two of them teamed up to fabricate a story about a sick younger sister who did not exist. They had been committing fraud on my family for years.Emma did not keep me waiting long. The very next day, she gave me an address. It was a plush toy factory in her hometown.I went there with the police. While the officers went inside to make the arrest, I kept my wits about me and pretended to strike up a casual conversation with some older women sunbathing by the entrance.“Her daughter teamed up with her uncle to defraud university students out of over 300,000 dollars. She’s already behind bars. She stole things too.“That’s exactly what they uncovered. Doesn’t this factory screen its employees? They’ve really brought trouble upon themselves.”The ladies had watched the police go inside and believed me completely. “One member of her family’s already behi

As for Emma, who was an exact copy of her mother, I really did not want to let her off the hook just like that.In the end, with the help of the police, the incident concluded with Emma being detained for three days and forced to apologize to me in front of the entire university’s faculty and students. As for Molly, she vanished the moment I showed up at her door with the police. She even canceled her phone service. The police tracked down Emma but could not get anything out of her. They had no choice but to plead with her, explaining how much harm it would do to her future if Molly went to prison. However, Emma did not care at all. She had a “do whatever you want” look on her face, which infuriated the police.Seeing that the police could not get Emma to talk, I decided to take matters into my own hands.Over the weekend, I finally cornered her at the campus cafe. When Emma saw me, she instinctively tried to avoid me. However, upon noticing that the cafe was packed with staff

This was not the first time I had crossed paths with her.During the second half of my freshman year, Emma had participated in a campus singing competition. I happened to be the host. While taking a break backstage, I accidentally saw her slipping a razor blade into someone else’s performance costume. I was terrified and reported it to a teacher right away.Later, Emma was disqualified from the competition. I heard that her classmates and roommates all found out about it, and no one dared to go near her anymore.I thought back to that day at her house and the look of hatred in her eyes. She clearly still remembered me.Faced with my questioning, Emma looked me over with contempt. “So, I edited those pictures. What of it? Do you dare say that you’ve never done anything like that yourself?”I sighed in exasperation, feeling a bit irritated. Why did I have to get mixed up with this family? It really was one misfortune after another. On Emma’s end, when she saw that I did not refut

I no longer cared about keeping my composure anymore. “Pfft, you’re nothing but a thief. You have no shame! My mom brought this coat back from abroad. “You claim it’s yours, but do you have a receipt? If you’ve got the guts, come out here and face me!”The police officer standing nearby also tried to reason with her. “Ms. Clark, we’ve already opened a case. The amount involved is as high as 350,000 dollars. “I advise you to turn yourself in voluntarily. If the victim insists on pressing charges, you’ll definitely end up in jail.”Molly’s face blanched and flushed. She stared at me and said pointedly, “You’d actually dare to sue me? “Aren’t you afraid I might accidentally let something slip? You’re just a young girl; you won’t be able to handle the consequences.”I rolled my eyes in exasperation. Threatening me right in front of the police? She really was brainless. With a mighty shove, I finally pushed open the door that Molly had been holding shut with all her might.I reac
