Chapter 2

Author: Not Drunk
As I was getting ready to leave, Jane called out to me, her expression complicated. "Conrad, I'll come back eventually. For now, please stop interfering with my family."

I scoffed and walked away without looking back.

In my previous life, I had believed Jane's empty promises so wholeheartedly that I convinced myself I was special to her. So, when she told me she wanted to have a child with Diego, I foolishly assumed it was just a phase and gave her the silent treatment.

After Jane became pregnant with Diego's child, I even threatened to take my own life unless she got an abortion. I was naive enough to believe I had a place in her heart.

Sadly, even with my last breath, I waited in vain for her to turn around and come back to me.

Now that I had been given another chance at life, I would never waste it on the same mistake again. Besides, I had a happy family of my own now.

Watching Tyler cross the finish line first, I couldn't help clapping excitedly.

"Some people just love going against everyone else," Diego remarked coldly.

Only then did I realize that his family had somehow taken seats right beside me.

"Conrad is really something, Jane. He knew Ansel was our son, yet he cheered for his opponent instead."

I casually scratched my ear, having no patience for a man who clearly enjoyed stirring up trouble.

When Diego saw the gesture, he froze. He looked almost humiliated. "Conrad, I imagine you had to go to quite a bit of trouble to sneak in here, huh? Security is pretty tight. This isn't somewhere you can just wander in."

He opened his wallet, pulled out a few bills, and tossed them at me. "I can't do much for you, but you're still Jane's ex. Take these."

I stared at him, stunned. It had been a long time since anyone tried to humiliate me.

But when I thought about it, something didn't add up. To give Tyler the best possible learning environment, I had personally interviewed every child and parent behind the scenes before admission.

During that process, I had never seen Diego or Jane. That could only mean they had gotten in through a shady way themselves.

I frowned and pulled out my phone. "Look into the family backgrounds of the students who enrolled recently, along with the staff who handled their admissions. I want everything in my inbox within an hour."

I could overlook a little mischief here and there, but when it came to the environment Tyler was growing up in, I would never tolerate anyone rotten getting through the cracks.

After hanging up, I turned toward Tyler on the podium, where he received his award. My expression softened. That little boy had been in poor health since birth, so Alaia and I spoiled him a little too much.

She was known for being ruthless and decisive in business, so she had poured nearly all her resources into the education sector so he could grow up healthy and happy.

When Tyler noticed me watching him, he beamed and waved. I was just about to wave back when Diego stepped in front of me.

"I heard that phone call earlier. Seriously? You think that was necessary? Everyone knows the owner of this kindergarten is Ms. Johnston, a major player in the business world. She's way out of your league.

"So, do yourself a favor and take the money and scram. If Ms. Johnston finds out some rando has been hanging around her kindergarten, you won't be nearly as lucky next time."

I said nothing and simply straightened my tracksuit.

After the parent-child sports day, Alaia was scheduled to give a speech for the upcoming charity fundraiser. She had repeatedly reminded me that Tyler and I had to wait for her so we could all go home together.

So, no, I wasn't going anywhere. If anything, I had to find out the rotten apple hiding in her kindergarten.

Then, at the end, Jane would casually say, "Conrad, listen to me," as if I were nothing more than a dog she had trained, not a human being worthy of dignity."We have nothing to talk about."At the thought of Alaia, I got out of the car and deliberately put some distance between Jane and me. "Given who we are to each other now, I think it's inappropriate for us to be sitting together."Tears spilled from Jane's eyes. Against her fuller figure, the whole scene looked almost comical."Conrad, don't be like this… You're scaring me…"Her tears came faster, and a note of grievance crept into her voice. "If you hadn't agreed to it back then, I never would've left to have Diego's children… You said you'd wait for me forever."I took a few quick steps back. Only after putting a safe distance between us did I answer her. "You were so eager to have Diego's baby, so why would I have stopped you? You know, I should thank you."Your sacrifice led me to Alaia, such an incredible wife. She was

Just as I had always helped Jane, she had given all her love and devotion to Diego. And now, she actually had the nerve to come asking me for help again.I looked at her with unhidden mockery and slowly walked toward her. She shot Alaia a smug look. She was just about to put a hand on my shoulder when I walked right past her.Without even glancing at Jane, I went straight to Alaia and swept her into my arms. "Are you okay, honey?"The once-fierce woman in the business world now curled up in my arms like a pampered wife. Even Tyler quickly covered his eyes. "Mommy and Daddy, ew!"I chuckled and carefully set her down in the chair. Then I dropped to one knee and checked her injuries."Conrad, are you blind? I'm clearly the one who got hurt!" Jane screamed.I glanced at Jane's hair, which was sticking out in every direction. I had to admit, the bird's-nest look suited her surprisingly well.Alaia, on the other hand, had a few thin red marks on her arm. That was enough to break my h

Everyone's eyes turned to Ansel and Diego, waiting to see what they would do.Diego clenched his fists, but in the end, he forced himself to approach me. "Conrad, they're just kids. There's no need to take things this far. Besides, how much damage could a few kids do? Don't make a big deal out of it."I snorted coldly as I looked at Diego, still trying to make excuses. Was this the man Jane had loved through two lifetimes? He had no sense of responsibility and pushed all the blame onto a child. If the circumstances had been different, I would've loved to ask Jane if she ever regretted it. She had given up her modeling career to have two children with a spineless man. Was this really the life she had wanted?Seeing me lost in thought, Tyler squirmed in my arms and softly called out, "Dad… Dad!"I snapped back to reality and looked down at him. "What's wrong, Tyler?""Daddy, I'm a superhero! I'm not a monster! I'm angry that they hurt you. They must apologize!"I affectionately r

A malicious look flashed across Diego's eyes. He clutched his swollen cheek and glared at Alaia and me."You think just because the Johnston family dominates the business world, you can do whatever you want? If everyone here joins forces and boycotts your family, I don't think your empire will last that long!"He looked as if he had come up with some brilliant idea. He immediately started stirring everyone up, urging them to band together against Alaia.A few idiots actually fell for his nonsense. As I dabbed medicine onto my wounds, I couldn't stop smiling.Ever since Alaia had dealt with everyone in her company who had opposed her, I rarely saw anyone bold enough to challenge her so openly.Sure enough, when she saw more people taking Diego's side, she applauded casually. She had her secretary bring over two chairs and told Tyler and me to sit down. Then, she stepped onto the battlefield like a general marching off to war."Tyler, today, Mommy will teach you your very first le

"Who's the woman who wants to steal my man? Show yourself."Jane couldn't help taking a step forward. "Ms. Johnston, is there some kind of misunderstanding here?"The moment Tyler saw her face, he shouted, "Mommy, it's her! She said I was Daddy's adopted son and told Daddy to send me away!"Jane shook her head, trying to explain. "You must've confused me for someone else. Conrad is my ex-husband. He's very much still in love with me. He promised me he would never marry anyone else."Then, she lifted the ring around her neck and showed it to Alaia. "This is our wedding ring. I've kept it safe all these years. I'm sure he still has his, too."I stared at the ring, momentarily dazed. I had once begged her to wear it, but that same ring was now hanging from her neck after all these years.Alaia snorted dismissively and glanced at me. "So, this is the woman you were stupid enough to fall for? No wonder she turned out to be trouble."I gave an awkward laugh and tried to stand. The mov

"What happened there?"Hearing it was Alaia's voice, Tyler wiped the tears with this dust-covered hand and ran toward her clumsily. Out of nowhere, Ansel showed up with a few other kids and blocked his way."He's the monster! Let's drive him away together!"At his command, the kids raised the tools in their hands and swung them down on Tyler. My eyes widened with rage as I used every ounce of strength I had to pull Tyler into my arms. Riding crops and sticks came crashing down on me, tearing open my already battered wounds."Daddy's here. I won't let them hurt you."Alaia and I had raised Tyler with all our care and love. From the day he was born, we had never left him in anyone's care, not even a nanny. To us, he was the living proof of our love. No matter what, I couldn't let these brats hurt him.Alaia looked around curiously and started toward us, but the parents immediately surrounded her."It's such an honor to finally meet you, Ms. Johnston. I had no idea you were so yo
