Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Nameless
"I'm not getting any idea," I said, puzzled.

"Then don't be mad. It's just that on Vanessa's birthday, you happened to be working, so I..."

Now I was even more confused. "Mad about what?"

That stopped her short. After a long silence, she said, "I'll come home and pick you up tonight. We'll go out to eat."

I was about to say I wasn't going when I heard the dial tone. She'd hung up.

Genevieve came back to get me and drove us straight to Marlowe's, an upscale seafood restaurant.

The moment we stepped inside, the floor manager walked right past me and greeted Genevieve, who was behind me, with deference. "Welcome, Ms. Rothwell. Your husband's already here. He's in the Willow Room."

Genevieve's face changed. Before she could say anything, Ethan came out from inside. His eyes lit up when he saw her, and he trotted over like an eager puppy.

"Genevieve!"

Then, as if he'd only just noticed me: "Oh, Felix, you're here too. You've never been here before, have you? Genevieve's favorite thing here is the lobster salad."

The manager glanced between us and sensibly slipped away.

I gave a faint smile. "What a coincidence."

Genevieve's expression shifted. She came over to take my hand, but I turned away. "Let's go. I'm hungry."

Through the whole meal, Genevieve was distracted. She kept glancing at me, putting food on my plate, telling me about the dishes.

I gave her the occasional half-hearted response until finally I sighed. "Just eat."

Halfway through, the owner came over to chat, and that was when I found out the place belonged to her friend, Trevor Beck.

Trevor apologized to me first, saying the manager was new and had mixed people up.

I knew he was covering for Genevieve. Her friends were tight-knit. They covered for her every single time.

I smiled. "It's no big deal. Thanks for coming over yourself."

Trevor seemed surprised I wasn't crying or making a scene. He made a little small talk and left.

After the meal, I came back from the restroom to find Genevieve holding a drunk Ethan, her face full of tenderness.

Last year, I'd gotten drunk at a work dinner. A coworker called Genevieve from my phone, but she refused to come get me.

The coworker brought me home, but I kept punching in the wrong door code. It was early winter, and I ended up sleeping in the stairwell all night.

It wasn't until the next morning that I found out Genevieve had been home the whole time.

"I just didn't feel like letting you in. Maybe now you'll learn your lesson. Look at you, stinking drunk. Disgusting!"

Remembering that, I went back to the private room, grabbed my bag, and left.

I'd barely walked in the door at home when Genevieve called. "Felix, what's wrong with you? You just left without telling me? Do you know how long I waited for you?"

"Genevieve," I said calmly, "let's get a divorce."

It was the second time I'd brought up divorce. The first had been on our anniversary last year.

Genevieve had gone to the aquarium with Ethan. We'd had a huge fight, and she shoved me so hard I fell down the stairs and broke my leg.

I'd thought I could use divorce as a threat. I never imagined she'd agree right away.

So I ended up on my knees, sobbing my heart out, begging her to forgive me for saying it.

But this time, I really meant it.

Genevieve went still.

After a moment, she let out a cold laugh. "This again? Fine. I'm coming home right now. Let's see what else you've got."

Half an hour later, she finally got home. I handed her the divorce agreement I'd prepared long ago.

But she jerked her hand back and let the papers fall to the floor.

"Huh. You really went all out this time."

She gave me a long look. "This game gets old if you play it too much."

"I'm serious this time."

She just let out a scornful laugh. "Felix, I know you too well. Playing hard to get takes brains. Do you even have any?"

  • I Stopped Loving Her   Chapter 10

When the six-month training program ended, I came home with a promotion to department manager. Ronan and Phoebe got me a huge cake and came over to celebrate. We'd just cut the cake when the doorbell rang."That's probably the food delivery."I went to answer it, but it was Genevieve at the door. She'd lost a lot of weight. When she saw me, she forced a smile."Felix, I heard you got promoted. I came to congratulate you."Phoebe came out and slipped her arm through mine. "Who is it?"Genevieve went pale, as if she'd suddenly lost her voice. After a long pause, she finally spoke, her voice hoarse. "Can I come in and celebrate with you?"Phoebe graciously stepped aside. "Of course, Ms. Rothwell. Come on in."Genevieve stumbled a little. She took off her shoes, but her slippers weren't in their usual spot.Phoebe handed her a pair of disposable guest slippers. "Sorry, we don't have any spare slippers."Genevieve didn't stay long. She left looking lost. Not long after she left,

"If we just buy any old ring now, it would feel like I was shortchanging you."I believed her without a second thought. It wasn't until she started wearing matching rings with Ethan that I realized what a fool I'd been.Mrs. Rothwell came over and took my hand. "Felix, I know you've been treated unfairly these past few years. But Genevieve has turned over a new leaf. Please forgive her."There was still plain contempt and resentment in her eyes, yet she'd lowered herself to plead with me, just to placate me for now so I wouldn't hurt their precious daughter.I gave a light laugh and pretended to agree. Only then were Mr. and Mrs. Rothwell satisfied enough to go back to their hotel.I went into the hospital room alone. Genevieve was awake and looking at me eagerly."Once you're better, go back home. Stop causing me trouble here."I turned to leave, but there was a thud behind me. Genevieve had fallen off the bed."Felix!"Her eyes were red, her face pale, her voice pleading. "

Ethan came over and hooked his arm through Genevieve's. He shot me a smug look, then said sweetly to her, "Genevieve, let's go. He doesn't appreciate you. I- Ah!"Genevieve shoved him away hard, but her eyes stayed locked on me."Babe, I know I was wrong before. Forgive me and come home with me, okay? I'll cook for you every day from now on. Whatever you want, I'll give it to you."I couldn't help a scoff. Before, if she'd begged me this humbly, my heart would've ached so badly I'd have forgiven her on the spot. But now? Where on earth was her confidence coming from?Did she think all she had to do was crook her finger and I'd come running back like a dog?"Genevieve, if you don't want me to take this to court, sign the divorce agreement. I'm sure you don't want something this petty to hurt your image."With that, I took Phoebe and Ronan into the restaurant.Genevieve followed with a dark face. Ethan scurried after her but didn't dare take her arm again. They went into the pr

Ethan said something on the other end. After hanging up, Genevieve spoke through the door. "Felix, wait for me at home. Eth- Ethan's having trouble with a client. It's company business, so I need to go deal with it. I'll clean up the mess on the floor when I get back, and I'll bring you that cheesecake you like."I gave a halfhearted grunt, put my headphones on, and went back to listening to Ronan on the other end. When I didn't respond any further, Genevieve finally hurried out, slamming the door behind her. After Ronan and I finished nailing down our travel itinerary, I grabbed the bags I'd packed long ago and headed straight for the airport. On the way, I texted Genevieve.[The divorce agreement is on the coffee table. Please sign it as soon as possible.]After a flight of almost ten hours, I'd barely stepped off the plane when several texts popped up.One was from a coworker: [Your wife came to the office looking for you. Didn't you tell her you took time off?]Another was

Genevieve was quiet for a moment before she forced the words out. "I'm right outside Ronan's place. He just left."I let out an irritated sigh. "What's wrong with you? Do I have to report to you wherever I go now?"She hurried to explain, her tone still gentle. "I-I'm just worried about you. Felix, tell me where you are. I'll come get you.""Hollis Children's Home."She hesitantly asked where that was. My patience ran out completely, and I hung up.I don't know how she found it, but the moment I walked out the front gate, Genevieve was already waiting there, eyeing Phoebe beside me warily.Phoebe shrugged, unbothered, and headed for her own car.Genevieve eagerly opened the passenger door for me. I looked at it, then got in the back.On the dashboard in front of the passenger seat lay a pair of men's black boxers.Genevieve's eyes went wide. She scrambled to toss them out of the car, stammering, "Ethan borrowed my car to change clothes. We didn't do anything. Felix-"I closed

I sat Ethan down next to Genevieve. Ignoring the panic in her eyes, I pressed a glass into each of their hands and hooked their arms together.I beamed with satisfaction, like a proud parent at their kid's wedding. "Once you two have your arm-in-arm toast, you'll be together forever. Make a good life for yourselves."When neither of them moved, I hurried to reassure them. "Don't worry, I won't stand between you two. I hope true love wins out too."The room went dead silent. Everyone gaped at the three of us. I nudged their hands. "Go on, drink."With that, I walked out of the room with a spring in my step."Felix! Felix!"Genevieve came running after me. She looked frantic, and her lips were trembling. "Ethan and I aren't what you think."I looked at her, puzzled. "What do I think?"She was at a loss for words for a second, then rushed to explain. "There's nothing between us! Really, you have to believe me!"She pulled off the watch and threw it on the floor, then yanked off t
