Chapter 4

Author: Goodtale
I pulled Dad back. “Dad, run…”

Before I could finish, Yvonne and Cecilia rushed toward us.

Yvonne grabbed Dad by the wrist. She wrapped her other arm around his waist and dragged him toward the gray van at the end of the alley.

I rushed over and bit her arm. “Let go of my dad!”

However, my body was only seven years old.

Cecilia grabbed me from behind and lifted me off the ground.

She shoved me into the back seat. Yvonne pushed Dad in from the other side.

Cecilia took Dad’s phone and locked the doors.

The van drove away. We were going to the city hall.

“Are you crazy?” Dad’s voice was quivering. “You’re kidnapping us!”

“Kidnapping?” Yvonne laughed. “You’re my fiance. I’m just taking you to the city hall so we can get married. If you call the police, they’ll probably just see it as a cute little couple’s spat.”

“Let us go!”

Dad reached over and grabbed Yvonne’s hair.

Cecilia pulled a dagger out from under her seat.

She held it by the handle with the blade pointed down. She pressed the tip against my knee.

“Move, and I’ll push it in.”

Dad froze.

Yvonne looked at us through the rearview mirror. A slow smile spread across her face.

I sat in the back seat. My whole body shook.

The pain from my past life came rushing back to me.

Had I really gotten a second chance, only to find out that I still could not save Dad?

The van arrived at the city hall.

Yvonne parked right outside the main entrance and opened the door.

Dad looked at me. The dagger was still against my knee. Then, he haltingly got out.

I quickly followed him.

Cecilia slipped the dagger into her sleeve.

She walked beside me on my left. One hand rested on my shoulder. The tip of the dagger pressed against me through her sleeve.

There were only a few people in the lobby.

Yvonne put her usual gentle and elegant smile back on.

She checked in. Three minutes later, they called them over.

“IDs and marriage-license paperwork, please.”

Yvonne handed over the documents and nudged Dad with her elbow.

Dad took his ID out of the inside pocket of his jacket.

His fingers were shaking.

The clerk took the documents and looked at Dad.

“Do you confirm that you are voluntarily entering this marriage?”

Dad’s lips moved. “…Yes.”

The clerk started typing.

Names, dates, ID numbers. One line after another appeared on the screen.

A smug smile appeared on Yvonne’s face.

My head started to pound.

No. I could not let Yvonne get her way!

“Miss, I need to use the restroom!”

The clerk stopped typing.

Cecilia tightened her grip and squeezed my clavicle.

“Hold it in.”

“I can’t! If you don’t take me to the restroom now, I’m going to pee right here!”

I reached for my pants.

Everyone else in line turned to look at me.

“Hey, hey, wait, kid.”

The clerk stood up and came around the counter.

She took my hand and led me toward the restroom.

Cecilia followed us.

The clerk looked back.

“You can wait outside. You can’t go into the men’s restroom.”

Cecilia stopped. She glared at me.

The clerk stopped outside the restroom door too.

“Go ahead. Your mom and I will wait here.”

As soon as I entered the restroom, I knocked on the door of an occupied stall.

“Excuse me, can I borrow your phone?

“I can’t find my dad. Please, I really need your help.”

I started to cry.

A hand with a phone reached out from under the stall door.

My fingers shook so badly that I could barely press the numbers.

“Grandpa, come to the city hall now!

“Someone is forcing Dad to get married at knifepoint! Call the police! Hurry!”

Cecilia shouted from outside, “Are you done yet?”

I quickly ended the call and handed the phone back.

When I returned to the lobby, the clerk was confirming the information with Yvonne.

Yvonne had one arm around Dad’s shoulder.

To anyone else, they looked like a loving couple.

Yvonne turned and looked at me. The corners of her mouth curled up.

I knew that look. She had given me the same look every time she hurt Dad in my past life.

Yvonne nodded. “Everything is correct.”

The clerk was about to click the mouse when the glass doors to the lobby opened.

Two police officers in uniform walked in.

A man followed them.

“Wait! They can’t get married!”

Dad replied right away.[Where are you? Can you talk?]The only reply was a location pin. It was for an apartment complex about six miles from our home. Then, the profile went gray. No more messages came through.Dad put down his phone and looked at me.“This person sent the location and then disappeared.”“Someone must have taken the phone away.” I set my spoon down. “Call the police.”The police arrived fifteen minutes later. The apartment complex was old and run-down. The alleys twisted and turned so much that even delivery drivers got lost.An officer checked the location. “The area is too big. We’ll have to go door to door.”I looked up at him. “I’ll go.”“You?”“I’ll say that I’m looking for my cat.“A child knocking on doors is less likely to make someone suspicious. An adult would make them more alert.“I’ll keep my phone in my pocket with the call on speaker. You can listen from there.”The officer hesitated for a moment, then nodded. No one answered at the fir

In a small studio downstairs at the TV station, we were interviewed by a short-haired woman in her thirties. She leaned forward a little when she spoke. Her voice was soft, as if she was worried she might scare me.She started with a few simple questions. How old I was, what grade I was in, and what I liked to eat.I answered each one.She nodded, then changed the subject.“How did you know something was wrong with that woman that day?“What did you notice that made you stop your dad from getting married?”I sat in the studio chair and paused for a moment.“I had a nightmare.”The host froze. “A nightmare?”“I dreamed that she beat my dad every day after they got married.“I was terrified. The first thing I did when I woke up was stop my dad from marrying her.”The studio went quiet for a few seconds. The host had a complicated look on her face.Dad spoke up from beside me.“Ryan almost never had nightmares.“But thanks to this nightmare, I didn’t end up in hell.”Dad

The screening process for military housing was much stricter than I expected.Dad made copies of his ID, proof of his relationship with Grandpa, a clean criminal record check, and the police report receipt. He submitted all the documents at the gate. The man in charge was middle-aged and dressed in plain clothes.“Who will you be living with?”“My father, Julian Sullivan.”“Which building?”“Building Seven, Unit Two.”“Go home and wait for the results. You’ll hear from us within three business days.”During those three days, Dad went to work and submitted his resignation.“Dad, I want to go too.”I stood up from the couch and took Dad’s hand.Dad froze for a moment, then smiled.“Ryan, are you worried I’ll disappear again as I did in your nightmare?”I nodded.“Then, let’s go.”When we got to the company, Dad took me to the HR department.“Wait here. Don’t wander off.”“Okay.” I sat on the couch in the waiting area. Two of Dad’s coworkers walked past with some paperwo

I looked at Neil.My voice was still shaking, but every word was clear.“They dragged Dad and me into the car in that alley. The suitcases are still there.”The smile on Yvonne’s face vanished. She stared at me. The calm look on her face slowly fell apart.“You little brat, you—”She suddenly lunged forward. Her handcuffs slammed against the armrest of the interrogation chair with a loud clink. An officer beside her shoved her back into the chair. “Sit still!”“What are you talking about? There’s no security camera in that alley—”Neil was already on his feet. He picked up his radio.“Zach, get the security footage from the alley by the west gate of Garden Heights. Check this morning’s footage.”Yvonne’s mouth snapped shut.Cecilia’s lips trembled. She could not say a word.It took less than twenty minutes to get the footage.A video appeared on the screen.A gray alley. A concrete floor. A metal gate.Dad and I appeared at the edge of the screen.Yvonne and Cecilia ru

Cecilia’s face changed instantly. She took a step back.“Those are just the words of a kid!” She waved her hands in panic.“Kids make things up all the time! I don’t have anything on me!”As soon as she finished, she turned and ran toward the lobby doors. Her shoe slipped on the marble floor.Cecilia stumbled and grabbed the door frame. Then, she pushed open the glass door and ran outside. The other officer, Tyler Dixon, reacted quickly. He chased after her.“Stop! Don’t run!”Neil stepped forward and grabbed Yvonne.“You stay right there.”Neil pushed Yvonne against the counter. Her smile cracked.Neil turned to Dad. “You two need to come to the station and give a statement.”Dad nodded.Tears still covered his face, but his voice was steady. “Okay.”He turned to the clerk behind the counter. “Cancel the application. I’m not getting married.”“I second that. You can’t get married.”Grandpa also looked at the clerk.“Why not?”Yvonne could not keep up the act any long

It was Grandpa!Grandpa came in with his cane. His eyes immediately found me.The entire lobby fell silent. One of the clerks came over.“Hello. What seems to be the problem?”“We’re police.”The officer in charge, Neil Wilson, showed his badge.“We received a report that someone was being forced into a marriage at knifepoint.”The clerk looked stunned. “But this is the city hall.”Neil looked at Dad, who was still at the counter.Cecilia immediately pulled her hand off my shoulder. She lowered her head and leaned close to me. Her voice was low and urgent.“Did you call the police?”I screamed as loud as I could.“Officer, they kidnapped my dad!“They forced him to come here with a knife!“My dad doesn’t want to marry her! Please save him!”My voice cracked. Tears covered my face.“Dear boy, come here.”Grandpa walked over and pulled me tightly into his arms.Cecilia struggled for a moment. She refused to let me go.“Let go!” Grandpa struck his cane against the flo
