Chapter 4

작가: Forest
For the remaining six weeks, I stayed out of the class group chat.

They still dragged me out to laugh at me now and then. I never answered.

Every morning at first light I went downstairs and walked.

Half an hour at first, then an hour, then two.

Strength work in the afternoon, skin care and posture work at night.

It was only after the weight started coming off that I realized Eleanor wasn't ugly.

She had naturally good features. She was simply heavy and covered in acne, and that was enough for people to mock her.

When she smiled, she had dimples.

After one month I had lost thirty-three pounds.

My insulin numbers were normal and my knees had stopped aching.

In the second month, I focused on building muscle and definition.

The muscle memory from more than ten years of dance came back to me even in this body.

I stood in front of the mirror and ran the basic dance drills over and over.

Marianne saw me and thought something was wrong with me.

"Baby, why are you standing pressed against the wall like that?"

"Posture training."

She circled around me, laughing. "My baby is beautiful. You look like a movie star."

I couldn't help laughing.

A sincere compliment. I'd never had one before.

When I took gold at a dance competition, Vivian had only said coldly, "Don't think winning one award gives you the right to be proud."

And now the smallest improvement was enough to make someone genuinely happy for me.

The week before school started, I went back to the hospital.

A hundred and forty-five pounds.

Fifty-five pounds in just under two months.

The weight had come off fast, but every health marker was still in the normal range.

The doctor read the report and smiled.

"Keep it up."

At home I stood in front of the mirror and looked at myself for a long time.

I still wasn't what they would call thin.

There was soft flesh at my waist, and my upper arms were no longer thin enough to encircle with one hand.

But the girl in the mirror had color in her skin and light in her eyes.

That was what beauty really looked like.

That night a poll popped up in the school group chat.

[Vote for this year's head cheerleader.]

There were only two candidates.

Eleanor.

Corinna.

The people who had laughed at me came swarming back.

[Eleanor? She thinks she belongs on the same list as Corinna?]

[They're not even in the same league.]

[I'm not voting for Eleanor. She'll embarrass our whole school at the competition!]

They all said they weren't voting for me, and my count shot to first anyway.

Under the rules, whoever received the most votes had to organize homecoming once school started and choreograph the new cheer routine.

Eleanor, still wearing my name, sent me a DM.

[Do you like the surprise I set up for you?]

[I had someone add you to the ballot specially.]

[Homecoming gets streamed to the whole school. The second you step out, everyone will watch a two-hundred-pound pig try to dance.]

[You wanted to compete with me, didn't you? I'm giving you the chance.]

Right after that she sent a photo.

A long gold gown, with a twenty-one-inch waist.

It was the couture piece the woman who used to be my mother had ordered for the opening ceremony.

But the Eleanor in that photo didn't look well in it.

She was thinner than she had been two months ago.

Her cheeks were hollow, her face almost skeletal, and exhaustion filled her eyes.

So the last two months had clearly been treating her well.

I was about to close the chat when another message came through.

[Carl's getting ready for the game too. Want to guess whether he'll be disgusted when he sees you like that?]

I looked at the screen and smiled, then hit the button and cast a vote for "Eleanor."

I sent her a message.

[Thanks for putting me onstage.]

She kept demanding to know what I meant. I didn't explain.

On the first day of school, Marianne insisted on taking me shopping.

I changed into a forest-green high-waisted tank and an A-line skirt that stopped just past the top of my thighs.

Marianne looked at me in it and said nothing.

"Mom, does it not look good on me?"

"It looks good. My baby looks good in anything."

Homecoming night was held in the school gym.

The bleachers were packed, and the number of people watching the stream kept climbing.

The school group chat was scrolling too fast to read.

[Why isn't Eleanor here yet? She didn't chicken out, did she?]

[She picked her own cheer squad, and not one of them has posted a photo of her.]

Up on the stage, the announcer was already calling out, "Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for the Westbrook High cheer squad!"

Laughter went up inside the gym.

At that same moment, I stood outside the doors and pushed them open myself.

The results had barely gone up when Eleanor lost her mind. She rushed to the front of the room, snatched the printout, and looked at the name at the top.First place, Eleanor, a perfect score.Last place, Corinna."That's impossible! Corinna is supposed to be first!"She was shrieking. Students below covered their ears. The teacher stared at her in disbelief."But you are Corinna!""I am not!"All the misery and jealousy she'd bottled up finally exploded. She looked at me coldly. "She's the real Corinna! We swapped bodies!"The room went quiet, and a few seconds later the whispering started."What is she talking about? They swapped bodies?""Has she lost it? Should somebody take her to a hospital?"Eleanor was past caring about any of it.She grabbed my shoulders and shook me hard."Corinna, give me my body back!"What gives you the right to come first while you're in my body? You stole my parents too!"That was supposed to be my name, my parents, my life! You thief!"I looked at her c

When Mrs. Ford finished speaking, everyone looked at me.Eleanor stared at me, panic and hatred in her eyes. She couldn't play the piano, and she knew I could. When I was little, I practiced the piano eight hours a day just to perform one piece flawlessly at a party. When my fingers split open, Vivian had the doctor cover them with Band-Aids, and I kept playing.A fever of a hundred and two was not a reason to stop. One remark from Mrs. Ford that it "wasn't smooth enough" earned me a full day of extra practice as punishment.I used to work to please them because I had no choice. And now?I smiled and said, "Sorry. I don't play."The room went quiet the moment I said it, and Eleanor thought she'd found something to use against me."You don't play? You loved showing off at school. Why are you hiding now?"A few of the heiresses looked at me with distaste."So she has no real talent after all.""With a background like that, were you expecting her to play?""Mrs. Ford gave her a chance to

At seven thirty I arrived at the Ford house right on time.I had barely stepped into the ballroom when I heard my birth mother's flat, cold voice. "Back straight. Chin up. Carl's mother will be here any minute. If you make one mistake, I won't spare you just because people are watching."Eleanor wore a fitted gown, her face paper-white.She saw me and had just started to look smug when Vivian took hold of her chin."Why is your face swollen?"Eleanor backed away, frightened."I only had a little soup this afternoon.""A little?"The next second Vivian kicked her in the stomach."I told you: no food before a family dinner. You can't even control your own mouth, and you want to marry into the Ford family?"The sound of her hitting the floor carried across the ballroom.Guests turned to look. She covered her face and stared at Vivian in a panic."Mom, there are guests here..."She had thought rich parents doted on their daughters without conditions. Her tears only made Vivian's face darke

After homecoming, the class group chat blew up.[Eleanor, we said some ugly things before. I'm sorry.][I take back everything I said. You were amazing out there.][She held her own standing next to Corinna!][She looks amazing. Even Corinna looks a little washed out next to her.]That last one was deleted the second it went up, but Eleanor, wearing my name, had already seen it.Her face got worse. She had gone to all that trouble to steal my body for one reason: to be the person everyone was looking at.And I had taken every pair of eyes in that gym using the face she was ashamed of.How could she not be afraid?Right then the faculty advisor posted an announcement.[This semester's merit awards will be based on the cumulative assessment in four days.][It covers everything from last semester and counts toward your GPA.]The chatter turned into complaining.[An exam the first week back? Are they trying to kill us?][Is there even a point? Corinna's taking first, obviously.][There's n

The second Carl said it, everything around us went quiet.Eleanor's face went a frightening shade of white. She pulled Carl to her side."Of course you've met her. She's in my class."She was so heavy before, and nobody noticed her. You just don't remember."She watched him nervously. Carl freed himself from her grip and looked at me."I don't mean at school. It's the way you carry yourself. You remind me of someone."For one second, something in me stirred. Then I thought, so what?He remembered how I walked, and he had never once actually cared about me.After the rib surgery I lay awake all night from the pain, and all he had to say was that I looked washed out and didn't photograph well. When I fainted from low blood sugar because I wasn't eating, he put me in a lounge to rest and went back to the dinner. Now I had a different face, and suddenly he was treating me like I mattered. It was almost funny.I pulled my hand free."Carl, that's a really old line."Laughter rose around us,

The laughter inside the gym kept going when the doors opened.Every head turned at once. Some people lifted their phones to get an ugly shot of me.Others already had the school message board open, with a headline typed out.[Watch the 200-pound fat girl humiliate herself live.]And then, a second later, the whole gym went dead silent.I walked in wearing a pair of sneakers, straight into all those searching stares.Behind me the cheer squad came in full of energy. My figure was strong and well-proportioned, and more than ten years of dance training showed in every unhurried step. The boys in the front row stared, openmouthed."Who is that?""Is she new? How have I never seen her before?""She makes that cheer uniform look amazing. She has so much energy!"A few girls lowered their voices too."She has such presence.""Look at how she carries herself. And that smile.""She's stunning."I ignored all of it and walked straight for the stage. As I passed our class section, the student cou
