Chapter 3

Autor: Hyacinth
Four years passed.

By the time Logan turned four, the difference between the two boys had become impossible to ignore.

My son was taller and stronger than other children his age. His wounds healed within hours, and whenever he became emotional, a faint golden ring appeared around his pupils.

The pack doctor said those were signs of an exceptionally powerful Alpha bloodline.

"He may complete his first shift early. One day, he'll be strong enough to inherit your father's pack."

Isabella happened to hear him.

Her eyes immediately lit up.

She crouched in front of Logan and took his hands, as though she were already imagining the future that supposedly belonged to her.

"I knew it. Look at him—he's only four, and his Alpha blood is already showing."

Then she glanced at Runt, who stood silently behind her.

He was thin and pale, with fading bruises around his wrists. Unlike Logan, his eyes had never shifted, his claws had never emerged, and he had never displayed the slightest trace of his wolf.

It wasn't because he was truly weak.

She deliberately withheld food and water from him, and whenever he displeased her, she would lock him away as punishment.

Sometimes, when I passed by her house, her voice would suddenly grow louder as she screamed at Runt—almost as if she wanted to make sure I heard every word.

Just like now.

Isabella's expression turned cold as she looked at him.

"Some children are born to lead. Others will always be useless."

Runt lowered his head.

A tear slipped silently down his cheek.

Isabella didn't notice.

But I did.

I crouched in front of him and wiped it away.

"You're not useless."

Runt looked at me with red-rimmed eyes.

"Then why can't I do what Logan does?"

"Because everyone develops differently. You don't have to be like him to deserve kindness."

Isabella immediately pulled him away.

"He's my child, Claire. I know how to raise him."

Her child.

If only she understood how true those words were.

Over the past four years, I had tried repeatedly to stop her. But every time I reported Runt's injuries, Ryan used his position at the hospital to alter the medical records, while Isabella insisted she was only helping her weak son awaken.

Once, I found Runt locked inside a dark closet and tried to take him away.

Isabella blocked the door.

"You already have your own son. Stop interfering with mine."

Ryan pulled me back.

"Claire, Isabella is his mother. You have no right to take her child."

He thought Runt was my biological son.

He knew Isabella was hurting him, yet he continued protecting her because every injury weakened the pure-blood heir they had stolen from me.

After that, I quietly began gathering evidence, but Ryan covered their tracks so carefully that I never had enough to expose them completely.

Then Isabella went too far.

That evening, Logan and I were returning from my father's house when a child's scream came from across the hall.

I told Logan to stay inside and ran into Isabella's apartment.

Runt lay unconscious on the kitchen floor beside a broken chair.

Blood ran from his temple. One arm was twisted beneath him, and his breathing was frighteningly weak.

Isabella stood over him with a training rod.

"What did you do?"

"He couldn't even bring out his claws," she said. "I was only trying to awaken his wolf. I barely hit him."

I rushed over and lifted him.

His eyes fluttered open.

"Mrs. Carter…"

"I'm here."

"Please don't let her hit me again."

I held him tightly and stood.

Isabella blocked the doorway.

"Put him down. He's my child."

"He needs a hospital."

"I said he's mine!"

"You can explain that to the police."

I carried Runt outside and called an ambulance.

By the time we reached the hospital, he had lost consciousness.

Ryan arrived soon afterward and immediately went to Isabella.

"What happened?"

"He fell during training," she said.

When Ryan saw the police, he turned on me.

"Why did you call them before speaking to us?"

"A child was nearly beaten to death, and you're worried about the police?"

"Don't exaggerate. Isabella would never deliberately hurt her own son."

Before I could answer, the doctor came out.

"The child has several fractures, a severe concussion, and internal bleeding. These are not training injuries."

Isabella began shaking her head.

"He's always been weak. His body can't handle anything."

"We tested his wolf bloodline to determine the correct treatment," the doctor continued. "He's an ordinary werewolf. At four, it's perfectly normal for his wolf to remain dormant. You can't force him to show the same abilities as Mrs. Carter's pure-blood son."

Isabella stared at him.

"No. That's impossible."

"There's nothing wrong with him," the doctor said. "He was simply never born with a pure-blood Alpha lineage."

"But he is Claire's son!" Isabella blurted out. "I switched the babies myself!"

The hallway fell silent.

Ryan slowly turned toward her.

"What did you just say?"

He wasn't shocked that the babies had been switched. He was shocked that Isabella had just confessed it aloud in front of doctors, police officers, and half the hospital corridor.

Isabella froze.

Then she looked at me, the color draining from her face.

I met her gaze calmly.

"You did switch our children at the hospital four years ago."

I glanced toward Logan.

"But that same night, I switched them back."

Isabella whipped around toward the unconscious boy behind the glass.

The day Isabella was taken in for questioning, she kept shouting,"I didn't abuse him!""He's my pup! How could I possibly hurt him?"But as the investigators laid out the evidence, her voice gradually weakened.Four years of security footage.Hospital records.Photographs of old injuries.Medical reports Ryan had personally altered. They had even recovered evidence showing that Isabella had deliberately restricted Runt's food and repeatedly used suppressants to weaken his wolf. This wasn't punishment that had gone too far.She had spent years trying to make sure the pup she believed carried my Alpha bloodline never became strong enough to awaken. What finally broke her was a single recovered message. Before the first obvious signs of awakening appeared, they were supposed to stage an accident.Once the pup was dead, no one would ever question the switch.Isabella stared at the screen, all the color draining from her face."No…"Her breathing turned ragged."That was my son."She sudde

The day I left the house, I took only Logan's things with me.His clothes, his toys, a few picture books, and all of his medical records from the past four years. As for the jewelry and gifts Ryan had bought me, I left every single one behind. As I walked out the door, Logan slipped his hand into mine and asked softly,"Mom, are we never coming back?"I gently stroked his hair."From now on, we'll live in our own home."The new house wasn't big, but it was quiet. There were no deliberately amplified screams from Isabella, and no Ryan standing at the door, begging me over and over to repair a bond that was already dead. That night, I unpacked the last box.The city lights glittered outside the window.I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling glass and suddenly felt as though the weight that had been pressing down on my wolf for four years had finally lifted.Once my father learned that I'd moved out, he found me soon after."Come back and work for the family business."He pushed a docum

After I rejected Ryan several times, the humility slowly disappeared from his face, replaced by a dark, sullen expression. His suspension investigation was getting more serious by the day, and the hospital had temporarily suspended him from healer duties.Without a paycheck, he could barely afford to cover Isabella's living expenses anymore. And Isabella wasn't doing any better. The videos of her abusing Runt had caught the police's attention, and she'd already been called in for questioning several times. That night, the two of them finally turned on each other in the house."If you hadn't told me she'd never find out, how did you expect this to end?"Isabella grabbed a glass from the table and smashed it against the floor."Look where we are now! The pup is mine, and everything's been exposed!"Ryan let out a cold laugh."You actually have the nerve to blame me?""You were there when we switched the pups!""For all these years, who was the one beating him every day? Who was the one w

Runt survived the surgery.Because the doctors had documented years of untreated injuries, child protective services immediately removed him from Isabella's custody. Until the investigation was complete, he was placed with a foster family approved by my father's pack.Isabella wasn't allowed to see him without supervision. After we left the hospital, Ryan seemed like a completely different man. Before, whenever he came home, he couldn't be bothered to say a single unnecessary word to me.Now, he couldn't seem to stay away from me for even a moment. In the morning, he prepared breakfast for me."You haven't eaten enough. I can smell it on you. At least drink this."I didn't even look at it.When he came home that evening, the dining table was once again covered with dishes."You've protected this family and raised our pup all these years. Let me take care of you for once."I said nothing. No matter how hard he tried to please me, I gave him only one answer."I don't need it."Eventually

Her knees buckled."No…"The bloodline test Runt had received wasn't part of an ordinary childhood examination. Because of his internal bleeding and unstable wolf core, the doctors had ordered a full lineage panel to determine which treatments his body could safely tolerate."Impossible!"Isabella stared at the parentage report, her face deathly pale."How could he possibly be my son?"For four years, she had convinced herself that Logan's unusual strength came from Ryan, while Runt's weakness meant the suppressants and brutal training were working. It had never occurred to her that I might have switched the babies back. She suddenly looked up at me."You! You must have tampered with the test!""Give me my son back!"She charged toward the ICU like a woman possessed, only to be restrained by the security guards."Ma'am, the child is undergoing emergency treatment. Family members aren't allowed inside without authorization!""That's my son!"Isabella struggled desperately, crying and sc
