Chapter 2

Author: Queue
Luca opened the bathroom door and walked in with his head lowered, looking at his phone.

The door was left slightly ajar, so I could hear his voice clearly, but his tone had changed. He sounded like a completely different person from the man who'd been speaking to me just now.

"Don't feel guilty about what happened today. It's not a big deal. You're just starting out, so you're allowed to make mistakes. Stupid? Who dared call you that?"

He chuckled softly and continued in a gentle voice, "You're only a dummy if you cry so much that your eyes turn puffy. Go get some sleep already. See you tomorrow."

I turned and left, not wanting to listen in on them any longer.

…

Luca and I had made arrangements to sign a core asset joint ownership agreement the next day. It was a representation of the status and trust he'd promised me.

Just as we were leaving the house, his phone rang.

"You've been locked in your car? Don't be afraid. Your car locks might be faulty. I'll come over and handle it," he said into the phone.

He grabbed his keys and made to leave, looking flustered.

"Go meet with the lawyer first. I'll be there soon," he said to me.

I stopped him and asked, "What urgent business could be more important than us signing the agreement? Can't someone else handle it for you?"

Luca brushed my hand away in annoyance, his gaze stern. "Rita's a young lady trapped inside her own car. So what if we sign the agreement a little later?"

He swiftly drove away.

I went to meet the lawyer—the family's lead attorney, Carlo Marchetti—alone. He read the terms of the agreement to me in detail, every clause dictating the immense wealth and power Luca was providing me with.

Most importantly, Luca would make public my status as his Donna.

For the past seven years, I'd wanted nothing more than to stand openly by his side.

I leaned back against the leather couch, gazing motionlessly at my phone. My fingertips were ice cold.

An hour passed, then two.

My phone screen remained blank, and Luca didn't show up either.

I stared at the agreement's title page, on which was printed the Alfonso family's oldest pledge—"a contract is a lover's lifelong promise".

How ironic. How could I expect any lifelong dedication from someone who couldn't even show up to sign an agreement?

My phone screen suddenly lit up with a message from Luca.

"Sign it first."

It was simple and concise without a single unnecessary word. He wasn't even trying to brush me off.

"There's no need to wait any longer," I told Carlo.

I fed the agreement into a paper shredder, then walked out the door under Carlo's stunned gaze.

…

Luca came home very late that night. Seemingly drunk, he asked me groggily, "Have you signed the agreement? Let me know if there are any terms you're not happy with."

Instead of replying to his question, I asked gently, "Luca, are you happy that you're about to marry me?"

He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Of course. Aren't you? You're about to become my Donna, which means sharing in my wealth and authority."

My heart sank. It turned out that, in his eyes, those were my goals.

It felt like I was the only one giving out love in this relationship.

I stood up to leave, but Luca suddenly lifted his hand from where it was hanging over the couch to grab my wrist.

"Don't go. Stay with me for a while."

When I didn't move, Luca tugged forcefully on my arm, pulling me a step forward. He was mumbling something unintelligible.

I leaned in close to listen.

"Rita, don't be afraid. I'm here."

My last glimmer of hope vanished completely. I pried his hand off of my wrist and turned to leave.

The rainy season went by and was replaced with long-awaited sunny days.Ever since the day I rejected Luca, he hadn't shown up again, but I found an email in my inbox."Rosa, I'm busy attending to the family business, but wait for me. I'll be back for you."I sat in the doorway of my cabin, tending to the rose bushes in my yard.Ms. Bellini was rambling about baking me an apple pie. The wind chime tinkled softly under the eaves, and the wind carried with it the scent of flowers.I no longer needed to live in a state of anxiety. All I needed to do was strategize behind the scenes. My left shoulder was long healed, but it would still ache faintly during the rainy season. One of my operatives sent me an email that read, "Rosa, we've received some news. The map of all underworld factions has been updated."I opened up the digital map.The name of Luca's family had completely vanished from it.The traitors within the family had banded together to defect to a rival family and insti

I thought that everything would work out so long as I pretended not to know Luca. I didn't expect him to track down the hotel I was staying at.Early the next morning, he showed up in the lobby with a large bouquet of flowers."Rosa, I remember you mentioning that you like this kind of flower," he said.I stopped in my tracks and glanced at the bouquet. When I first started dating Luca, I was envious of other women who got to receive fresh flowers from their boyfriends. But back then, my hands were constantly stained with printer ink.One day, I wiped my hands, pointed at a rose printed on a magazine cover, and dropped Luca a hint."Luca, this flower looks so pretty. If only someone would give me a bouquet of them—"Luca interrupted dismissively, "What good are flowers? It's not like they can block bullets."From then on, I never brought it up again.I didn't think Luca would still remember that, but I was no longer that same woman who would hope to receive flowers. I'd plante

Luca's emails had no impact on my life. I continued to live out a stable and peaceful life. Ms. Bellini taught me how to make an apple pie, and I helped her fix her leaking bathroom.Late one night, I was startled awake by a very faint, muffled noise.Old habits died hard. I immediately realized that the noise wasn't caused by the wind but a silenced gun.I rolled out of bed and tiptoed to the window with a dagger in hand.Three dark figures climbed silently through Ms. Bellini's window. Judging by how quick and nimble they were, it was clear that they were professional assassins.Ms. Bellini's cat was meowing shrilly in the yard.Without hesitation, I opened my window and slipped behind them. I first clamped a hand over the last person's mouth and nose, then stabbed him through the heart. Then, I quickly pulled out the dagger and stabbed it toward the back of the next person in front. The third person reacted swiftly. He noticed that I was wounded in one arm and raised his gun.

That day, after Luca had pacified Margherita—who woke up after surgery and started crying—he asked the doctor how my surgery was going. The doctor replied in shock, "Don Alfonso, Rosa's not in the observation room. I assumed you'd found her another doctor."It was only then that Luca realized I was missing. The hospital bed in the observation room lay empty, the pristine white sheets still stained with my blood.Luca's heart skipped a beat, and he murmured, "Where has Rosa gone?"He immediately took out his phone to call me, but the call wouldn't go through. When he tried to send me a message, he was informed that his number had been blocked. He panicked for an instant, then recalled that he could still contact me via email. He opened the email app and sent me the first email asking after my whereabouts. As he was exiting the application, he noticed that he'd actually sent me an email three days ago."Don't leave after work. Wait for me in the garage."He abruptly recalled how

Gritting my teeth through the pain, I returned to the house Luca and I shared. Once there, I packed all my belongings into a travel bag. The bag was heavy, weighed down by seven years' worth of memories. One of my arms was limp and useless, so I could only carry the bag with one hand. As I walked past the couch, I tripped, causing blood to stain the couch cushions. However, I had no time to clean up and could only leave quickly.I threw my gun and the communication device issued by the family into the river, keeping only my personal phone. After blocking Luca's number on my phone, I searched up a private clinic. The old doctor glanced over my gushing wound with clouded eyes. He promptly exclaimed, "You're a tough one to still be walking around normally with a wound this severe!"He handed me a piece of gauze.I bit down on it. My forehead was covered in cold sweat. For a full 40 minutes, I didn't make a sound. Only the scraping and grinding of bones could be heard.A bullet cla

When I saw Margherita the next day, she'd made a necklace of the ring and worn it around her neck. Some people had even started calling her Donna. She didn't refute them and simply blushed as she trailed after Luca.I stood a short distance away. Once the crowd had fully dispersed, I opened the door to Luca's office and locked it from the inside.I then asked hoarsely, "Luca, tell me the truth—have you fallen in love with Margherita?"Luca looked incredulous. "Rosa, I told you I'd marry you, so what exactly are you still making a fuss about? I've already placed a new order for a ring. Rita's just a poor, helpless woman. Why are you always so hostile toward her?"I sneered. "She's wearing a signet ring—that's the mark of a Donna."Luca said impatiently, "That's just an unfinished product. If she likes it, let her have her fun with it."His expression told me that it all sounded perfectly natural to him. Before I could say another word, an ear-shattering explosion suddenly rang ou
