Chapter 4

Autor: Inkbound
"I'm warning you, Rosalyn—you'd better hand over that money if you know what's good for you; otherwise, I won't hold back!" Phoebe began to lash out with desperate threats.

"Do you really have no idea what's happening here? You clearly know that the Sherwoods are already deeply involved in illegal money laundering! You ought to know that money laundering is a felony! You'd better give me those lottery tickets if you don't want Mom and Dad to go to prison!"

I distinctly noticed Mom and Dad, who had just approached from behind, turned pale the moment the phrase "money laundering" rang out. Dad's expression shifted from shock to anger, while Mom looked entirely bewildered and frightened. They honestly seemed to have no idea what was happening.

There was someone else who reacted even more strongly than they did, though. Liam, who usually remained completely unbothered no matter what happened, shuddered uncontrollably at the mention of money laundering. He tried to hide it, but that split second had already completely given him away.

Liam was involved in this. I had the confirmation I needed.

"You can let her in," I said to the guard.

Phoebe was led into the living room. She wore a smug smile, believing that I had backed down. "At least you know what's good for you."

Dad tried to speak several times, but I looked at him and stopped him every time.

"Do you have any evidence to prove that my family is involved in money laundering?" I asked.

"You want evidence? I'm the evidence!" Phoebe puffed out her chest.

"I'm the rightful heiress of the Sherwood family! I've been reborn! It was precisely because of this that the Sherwood family got investigated and ruined for good! I'm doing this for your own good, so as long as you give the money to me, I'll act as if I know nothing about it!"

I nodded and turned to Liam. "You heard everything, didn't you, Liam?"

Liam clearly didn't expect me to call him out at that moment. He had turned utterly pale, but he still managed to maintain a facade of composure and flashed his signature smile. "I-I didn't catch any of that, Ms. Rosalyn…"

I stood up and walked toward him step by step. "What do you think after hearing all that, Liam?"

Liam's expression shifted uncomfortably. "I shouldn't be hearing any of this. I'll take my leave now, Ms. Rosalyn."

I ordered coldly, "Get him."

In that instant, two of the guards stepped forward, pinning Liam down. He struggled violently as the panic set in, yelling at Mom and Dad. "You can't do this to me, Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood! You ought to know that everyone will go down once this goes public!"

There was a hint of hesitation on Mom's and Dad's faces.

Phoebe gained confidence from their reaction. "You're all done for if this leaks, Rosalyn! I'm the actual heiress of the Sherwood family, and you're nothing but an imposter!"

I ignored her shouting and just pulled out a stack of documents, slamming them down hard on the coffee table. It contained accounts, bank statements, information on Liam's contacts, and several winning lottery tickets.

Phoebe's eyes widened the moment she saw the lottery tickets, while Liam's expression was initially fraught with confusion.

"You're very familiar with these lottery tickets, aren't you, Liam?"

Liam's expression stiffened after hearing that. "Aren't these the lottery tickets the Sherwood family won recently, Ms. Rosalyn?"

In my past life, after the Sherwood family collapsed, I secretly liquidated some of the transferred assets and used the proceeds to purchase winning lottery tickets as a way to launder the money.

In this life, while Liam was away for a few days, I bribed some of his associates in advance to mislead him and subtly suggest the same laundering scheme. Desperate for a solution, he was bound to take the bait—and in doing so, provide me with all the evidence I needed.

"Is all this evidence—the past financial statements, the accounts, and the records of you buying winning tickets from those people—enough to get some honesty out of you, Liam?"

Liam instantly deflated and sank limply to the ground the moment he saw those documents, while Phoebe was completely bewildered.

Mom shrieked and quickly called for the guards.Dad forcibly pulled me behind him, preparing to defend against Phoebe's assault with his bare hands. "You psycho! What the hell do you think you're doing?"Phoebe held onto the knife and slammed right past Dad, burying the blade into my stomach. She stared at my pale complexion, her expression twisting into a look of pure triumph and malice. "I'll own everything once you're dead!"She laughed like an absolute lunatic. "You two loved her very much, didn't you? I'll be the only one left now that she's dead! I'll become the sole heiress of the Sherwood family!"Even with Dad pinning her to the ground, she kept laughing like a maniac, the sound slicing through the sudden, suffocating silence that had fallen over the room.I collapsed into Mom's embrace as she frantically checked my wound. I reached out and gently touched her face, watching as tears streamed down her cheeks.Phoebe's laughter persisted, sharp and grating. "You're suppose

Dad's voice was completely devoid of emotion as he ordered the guards. "Get this woman out of here. She is never to set foot within the gates of the Sherwood residence again."Phoebe didn't even fight back as she was dragged out. She merely stared intently at me, her eyes filled with hatred and bitter resentment.I knew that she wouldn't let the matter rest, but it didn't matter to me; after all, if I could destroy her once, I could do it a hundred times over.It wasn't long before the banquet continued. I mingled among the guests with a wine glass in hand, accepting their congratulations and compliments. It was as though the preceding farce had been nothing more than an innocuous interlude. It was then that a close family friend of the Sherwood family grabbed my hand and said, "You've finally made it through the worst, Rosalyn. You must be on guard against that kind of person in the future. They're way too dangerous."I smiled and nodded, saying, "Thanks for looking out for me. I

Phoebe pointed directly at me in a last-ditch effort. "What about Rosalyn? What right does she have to the Sherwood inheritance, even if I severed my ties with the Sherwood family? If I can't have it, neither can she!"She then turned to Mom and Dad, her demeanor immediately softening. "I'm truly sorry, Mom and Dad! I know I messed up big time! I mean, we're an actual family, after all. "If you just tear up that agreement and allow me to return to the Sherwood family, I swear I'll be entirely obedient from now on. Why don't we throw out this outsider together, as a family?"She thought she could sway Mom and Dad again, but Dad merely regarded her coldly as she acted out. "Who told you Rosalyn is an outsider?"Phoebe was stunned. "Isn't she the fake heiress of the Sherwood family? It was written clearly on that paternity test report!"Mom stepped forward and linked her arm through mine, a gentle smile playing on her lips. She glanced at the crowd and at a completely frozen Phoebe

After that incident, things at home remained unusually quiet for a while. Liam's case was settled soon after, exposing a substantial web of illicit activities behind him.Dad seized this opportunity to not only eradicate the company's internal traitors completely but also to solidify the Sherwood family's standing within the industry. In the meantime, I became the rightful heiress of the Sherwood family in both name and fact. Phoebe, following her expulsion from the Sherwood family, went off the grid for a while.I caught wind of her now and then. Apparently, things between her and her impoverished parents had grown entirely cold. She was lazy, entitled, and refused to work, which caused a lot of friction with her parents, who were already struggling financially. That affection they initially shared had vanished, replaced by frequent physical and verbal abuse.I believed that she would resign herself to her fate after that, but I still underestimated the depth of her obsession.

I sat back down on the couch and said, "You ought to know that the police will arrive shortly."Liam's body finally began to shake, and cold sweat drenched his back. "P-Please don't…"He looked toward Mom and Dad with a pleading gaze and said, "I'm begging you, Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood. Please let me off this once for the sake of how long I've worked with the Sherwood family!"Dad was livid. He looked at Liam slumped on the floor, then at the damning financial records on the table, unable to say a single word.Mom was completely blindsided by panic. She gripped my arm hard and asked, "W-What exactly is happening here, Rosalyn?""It is precisely what it looks like," I said as I reassuringly patted the back of Mom's hand."Liam abused his position to assist outsiders for years, using the Sherwood family's financial streams as a front for money laundering. "He panicked and desperately tried to legitimize the funds by secretly purchasing these winning lottery tickets once I uncovered
