Mistress

I was 10 minutes late to my own housewarming party. When I finally walked in, Wren Halley, the college girl my boyfriend, Austin Blanchard, had been supporting, was already chatting with my relatives like she owned the place. My parents sat at the head of the table, both of them looking furious. Austin walked over to me, looking completely relaxed. "What took you so long? Wren's been handling the guests for you." Everyone in the room went quiet. Wren moved behind him, almost shyly. As she shifted, her sleeve slid up and revealed an emerald bracelet on her wrist. It was my grandmother's jade bangle. Wren looked down. "I'm sorry, Lily. I've never been somewhere this beautiful before. I just thought I could help." Austin quickly stepped between us. "She's never had a chance to experience this kind of life. Let her enjoy it for one night. You don't have to make everything a big deal." I looked from him to the bracelet on her wrist and chuckled. Apparently, Austin had forgotten something important. This penthouse with its sweeping view of Bellmere belonged to only one person, and that person was me.

Chapter 1 What Was Never Hers
I didn't bother answering Austin. I simply stepped around him and stopped in front of Wren, holding out my hand. "Take it off." Wren flinched. Her eyes darted toward Austin, hoping he would step in. When I didn't budge, she finally began working the emerald bracelet over her hand. She took her time, twisting and tugging until the skin around her wrist turned pink. Then, she suddenly sucked in a pained breath, her eyes filling with tears. "Lily, I think my hands are a little too broad. It's stuck." Her voice trembled. "The more I pull, the more it hurts." Austin frowned and immediately stepped in front of her, shielding her from me. "Lily, do you really have to make a scene in front of everyone?" His irritation sounded so natural, like I was the one causing trouble. "It's just an old bracelet. Can't you see that her wrist is already red?" He looked at Wren, then turned back to me. "Just let her wear it tonight. I'll get you a more expensive one tomorrow." I stared at him.

Chapter 2 Not the Announcement He Expected
My father sat quietly at the head of the table. He picked up his glass, took a slow sip, and checked his watch. It was noon, the time he had picked for the formal toast. He set his glass down, rose to his feet, and straightened his suit. Every eye in the room turned toward him almost immediately. Next to me, Austin cleared his throat and fixed his tie. He even moved half a step forward as if anticipating something. He probably was. After all, he had been preparing for this moment for two weeks. He wrote his speech in advance and practiced it every night in front of the mirror, excited to stand here as the man of the house when my father announced our engagement.Naturally, he was also eagerly waiting to have it announced that his name would be added to the deed. My father looked around the room. His gaze paused briefly on Austin before dropping to the kraft envelope in his hand. For a moment, I thought he might open it. Instead, he folded it and slipped it back into the

Chapter 3 Some Things Aren't Worth Keeping
Wren bit her lip and picked up the sheet of paper. As soon as she read the heading, her face showed just enough surprise. "Austin... is this an application to add a co-owner to the property?" Her voice was soft, but still loud enough for everyone at the table to hear. She held the document out to him. Austin's eyes flicked from the page to the Porsche key lying on the carpet. Instantly, the tightness in his shoulders melted away. Just like that, the embarrassment from my father's toast was gone. He didn't take the paper from Wren. Instead, he adjusted his cuff and turned to me with a patient smile, like someone dealing with a stubborn child. "Lily, your parents even have the car key ready. Are you really still upset with me?" His voice was gentle, almost indulgent. I didn't answer, keeping my eyes fixed on the table before me. "Is this still about Wren trying on the bracelet?" Austin sighed, poured me a glass of water, and gently slid it toward me. "She just gra

Chapter 4 Just a Photograph
In Austin's mind, we were family, which meant I was supposed to compromise, be understanding, and protect an outsider from embarrassment. He made it sound as though every uncomfortable feeling I'd had to endure that afternoon came down to one simple flaw—I simply wasn't generous enough. I studied his flawless face and suddenly realized that our three years together were like the wind sweeping across the balcony. Those loving moments were there for a brief time, then gone the next without leaving anything behind. I took a step back, ready to speak. A sharp crash erupted from the living room, followed by a woman's startled scream. I spun around, shoved open the glass door, and hurried inside. The area in front of the display cabinet was a wreck. My mother had placed a family portrait there earlier that day. She had gone out of her way to find the retired photographer who had taken our pictures for years and ordered a custom solid-wood frame for it. Now, it lay shattered o

Chapter 5 Family Only
My father stood in the center of the living room, his gaze resting on the wreckage scattered across the carpet. He didn't look at Austin or Wren. Instead, he took the damaged photograph from my hands and studied it in silence. In the picture, I stood between my parents with one arm linked through each of theirs. All three of us were smiling brightly. Now, three jagged cracks ran across our faces. My father traced one of the cracks with his thumb and remained silent for a moment. Then, he raised his head and looked around the room. "Since this one is ruined, we might as well take a new picture while everyone is here." Austin visibly relaxed. "Exactly," he said quickly. "They say broken glass brings good luck. We'll take an even better one." He reached for Wren and guided her toward the center of the living room. "Come on, Wren. Let's take a family picture together." He said it so naturally, as though her place in the photograph had never been in question. Wren wiped the

Chapter 6 The Engagement Is Over
"This is a wonderful neighborhood," Irene continued, surveying the room with open approval. "It'll be perfect once you have children. The schools nearby are excellent." She leaned back and gave the interior a more critical look. "I'm not fond of the decor, though. It's far too plain. I'll have someone redesign the place after the wedding." Then, she turned to me as though the decision had already been made. "Lily, how many other properties do you own? You'll have to take me around for a tour sometime." Before I could respond, Irene opened her red handbag, pulled out a ring of keys, and dropped them onto the table. "Have a copy of the keys made for me. Once you two have a baby, I'll be coming over to help. I'll need the keys to let myself in." I looked down at the keys and smiled. "I'm afraid that won't be necessary, Mrs. Blanchard. I'm the only person with a key to this penthouse." She stared at me. "What do you mean? You and Austin are getting married soon. Where's his key?"

Chapter 7 Access Revoked
Austin stared at me with anger, disbelief, and something that looked almost like a plea. "Lily, are you really going to do this?" I didn't answer. Instead, I took out my phone and opened the residents' app. I didn't care that every relative in the room was watching as I went into the household access settings and selected Austin's profile. I then tapped on "Revoke Access." A confirmation tone sounded from my phone. "Resident access successfully revoked." Austin's phone vibrated in his hand. He glanced down at the notification on his screen. "You have been removed from the household access list for Bellmere Crest, Block 8, Unit 3001." His eyes widened. "You—" I didn't give him a chance to finish. I opened the garage management system, entered his license plate number, and removed it from my assigned parking space. His phone vibrated again. "Vehicle BLM-4827 is no longer authorized to access the private parking space assigned to Block 8, Unit 3001." Austin's fingers

Chapter 8 He Came Back for Money
"No. That's not why I'm here." Austin lowered his voice. "I really do want us to get back together." He hesitated before adding, "But I am in a situation right now. Just help me get through this, and I swear I'll pay you back twice over someday." I almost laughed. "Someday? With what money? Your checking account is empty before the end of the month, and your credit cards have been maxed out for ages. This 'someday' you keep talking about is just another way of asking me to keep supporting you." Austin's face flushed. "Lily, do you have to make it sound so ugly? I'm just going through a rough patch. Is it really so terrible to ask you for help?" His voice rose with frustration. "We were together for three years. How could you be this heartless?" I looked at the face that had once made my heart race and was struck by how unfamiliar it seemed. "Three years," I repeated. "For three years, you've lived in my home, drove in my car, and spent my money from a card attached to my ac

Chapter 9 Thank You
The notification came from my father. He tagged everyone in the family group chat and shared a photo of the appraisal report."According to the document, the custom frame was hand-carved from Alderwyn black walnut and valued at 86,000. A smaller note beneath it listed the cost of the professional portrait, printing, and reproduction rights at another 30,000, bringing the total replacement value to 116,000. The group chat erupted almost immediately. "That frame cost how much?" "No wonder it looked so well made." "She's really going to have to pay for that." Then, my father sent one final message, "Wren, please contact our house manager within seven days to arrange reimbursement. If the matter is not resolved by then, we will be pursuing this matter through the appropriate legal channels." A second message followed moments later. "You're free to share this publicly so there is no misunderstanding about what happened." I nearly laughed. My father wasn't simply deman

Chapter 10 Cutting Every Tie
The final screenshot showed another transfer memo—financial support for startup expenses. Every payment had been clearly documented, and much of the money I had given Austin had ultimately been spent on Wren. Austin went silent. Several minutes passed before another message appeared. "Lily, I'll pay you back. I promise." "Then, start now," I replied. His answer came almost immediately. "I don't have the money right now." "Then, borrow it." This time, the pause was longer. "You can't seriously expect me to come up with 400,000 dollars overnight." 'I'm giving you 30 days,' I wrote. "Repay the full amount by then, or my attorney will file a claim against you." I blocked him right after sending that text. Later, I heard about Austin's situation through a mutual friend. It seems he spent days calling everyone he knew, asking for loans. The friends who once admired his expensive watch, joined him for drinks, and called him a best friend suddenly found endless excuses
