The charity gala isn't my idea.

Monica invites me three weeks in advance, her voice careful over the phone like she's expecting me to say no. The Smith Foundation hosts it annually—some big fundraiser for children's hospitals that her company sponsors. She asks if I'd like to come as her guest, maybe bring Luna.

I almost decline. Public events mean cameras, questions, attention I don't particularly want. But there's hope in Monica's voice that makes me hesitate.
