"We should go to the hospital," I said for the third time, my voice tight with worry.

I was standing beside him, tense with each second that passed.

Darius was leaning against his car, his good hand pressed against his injured arm. Blood had soaked through his shirt sleeve, dark and wet against the fabric. His face was pale, a thin sheen of sweat on his forehead despite the cool afternoon air.

"It's just a scratch," he tried to dismiss.
