Chapter 4

Penulis: Jersey Wind
I stood frozen, staring at Conrad as he convulsed on the floor. It wasn't long before the door to the guest room we were in flew open.

Simone stormed in with the family doctor and several security guards. She shoved me aside, dropped to the floor, and pulled Conrad into her arms, her voice shaking as she cried out, "Conrad! What's wrong, Conrad?"

Leaning weakly against her, Conrad raised a trembling finger toward me. "Simone… He said… as long as I die… he'll get to be your husband… I… I can't breathe…"

His head lolled to one side, and he passed out.

The doctor hurried forward and injected him with an anti-allergy medication.

Simone spun toward me, her eyes burning. It looked like she wanted to skin me alive.

"Jason Sawyer!" she shrieked. "I've been putting up with your crap time and time again out of consideration for the fact that you saved my life. I even let you move into this house and enjoy a life of luxury! How could you be so heinous as to poison Conrad?"

She strode over and slapped me across the face. The blow was so strong it snapped my head to the side, and I tasted blood in my mouth.

"I'm so disappointed in you!" she screamed, her expression furious.

Clutching my stinging cheek, I took in her outrage. My mind was racing through the possibilities. If Simone reported me to the police for attempting to harm her fiance, I'd be locked away for at least a few months. But I knew she wouldn't do it—she wouldn't want any bad press about this matter.

Sure enough, even though she was trembling with rage, she simply continued to yell at me, "You think I wouldn't do anything to you? How dare you abuse my gratitude by doing something so outrageous?"

Despite saying all that, she never did report me to the authorities. Instead, she instructed her bodyguards, "He needs to pay for this! Lock him up in the basement! No one is allowed to check on him without my permission!"

The bodyguards came up to me and grabbed me. I couldn't stop them from hauling me out of the guest room.

The basement was cold and damp, the air thick with the smell of mildew and dust. After shoving me inside, the bodyguards locked the metal door and left.

Sometime after midnight, I calmly reached into my pocket.

Simone must have been too blinded by anger to remember that she'd made me her live-in assistant. On the very day I moved into this villa, the butler gave me the spare keys to all of the rooms in this place so that I could coordinate whatever household work needed doing.

This was the perfect opportunity for me. I pulled out the keys and quietly unlocked the basement door.

Avoiding the security cameras, I climbed over the back wall of the compound and, with great difficulty, snuck out of the luxurious neighborhood.

The moment I breathed free air again, I nearly threw my head back and laughed.

To hell with Simone, the domineering CEO of Parker Group, and her snake of a fiance. I wasn't going to entertain their shenanigans any longer!

I rushed to the private hospital on the outskirts of the city. Ava was still awake, sitting up in the hospital bed as she stared out the window.

Hearing a knock, she stood up warily. But when she heard my voice, she yanked the door open.

The moment she saw me, with my body covered in dust and my hair in complete disarray, her eyes reddened. She threw her arms around me and held me tightly.

"Darling… You've suffered so much." Her voice quivered as she continued to squeeze me hard.

We wasted no time in hiring someone to drive us back to Faircove that very night. No one could hold us back anymore. We were finally free.

Back at Valley Heights, the sky was just starting to lighten. Simone had sat up all night in her study, and she now had the dark undereye circles to show for it.

Conrad's allergic reaction had long since subsided, and she'd already finished dealing with the avalanche of work emails waiting for her.

Her eyes fell to the document on her desk titled "Confidential Compensated Relationship Agreement", and her lips curled into a confident smile.

As she toyed with her custom fountain pen, she leisurely asked Tori, "How are things down in the basement? Has Jason admitted his mistake yet? Did he spend the whole night reflecting on his actions and demanding to see me?"

Tori was busy racking her brains for an appropriate answer when Simone waved her off with a dismissive huff. Her eyes flashed with smugness as she declared, "Oh, forget it. It's good to let him suffer for a bit. I don't want him using the debt of gratitude I owe him as his excuse to act all petty and jealous in front of Conrad again."

She got up and grabbed the agreement. With Tori in tow, she went down to the basement, her eyes bright with anticipation.

"Jason, I know you only lost your head for a moment, and…"

Alas, when the bodyguard opened the heavy metal door, Simone's smile froze. She was greeted by the echoing silence of an empty room. Her heart clenched, and terror like no other washed over her.

Later on, I heard stories about what was happening back in Kingstone from the tourists who came to Faircove. They said that Simone fell severely ill after heading back to the city. When she got better, her personality seemed to have changed completely. She became a cold and ruthless workaholic, and she never got involved with another man.Meanwhile, after getting locked up in the psychiatric facility, Conrad was driven to madness. He spent his days screaming to the air, cursing my name.In the end, Simone also reported the senior executive who'd set Ava up to the police and had him imprisoned.Ava's name was finally cleared at last, but she refused the offers from headhunters inviting her to join various major companies. Instead, she chose to continue operating a small business right by the sea.…The sea breeze had stopped, and the sun had all but disappeared beneath the horizon. Ava pulled the shutters halfway down before flipping over the sign to indicate that we were closed f

The restaurant descended into chaos. Tables and chairs were sent flying, and screams echoed throughout the dining hall.Ava continued to adopt a protective stance, like a lioness guarding her territory. With the help of the wrench she was holding, she made sure none of the bodyguards got near her or me.These elite bodyguards who usually strutted around Parker Group arrogantly were nothing more than pesky flies to her. She could take each one down with a single hit. In a matter of minutes, all of them were sprawled across the floor, groaning in pain.Ava hadn't even broken a sweat. She tossed the wrench onto a table and stared coldly at Simone.Simone's expression was uglier than one could put into words. She trembled with rage as she took in all of her defeated subordinates. Out of nowhere, she shouted toward the door, "Get the legal team over here! I'm going to bankrupt this restaurant and send these two to prison!"I heard the sound of screeching tires again.Honest, decent pe

Sighing, I remarked, "You really know nothing about me, Ms. Parker. Six months ago, one of your company's senior executives framed my wife for embezzling company funds. She was thrown into a detention center and was about to be put on trial. If convicted, she would've been slapped with a severe sentence."I was just an ordinary man with no money or power. It was practically impossible for me to get the authorities to overturn her case. But when I was at the end of my wits, I happened to rescue you in the hurricane, and you'd lost your memory."I paused for a moment, watching the way Simone's expression slowly stiffened before I continued, "So I worked three jobs, pretending to devote myself to taking care of you. I spent a lot of my time in Faircove. I knew what the people here were like. "Those thugs were never actually going to hit you with that bottle. But if I threw myself in front of it and took the blow for you, then in your eyes, I became the person who saved your life."Si

I watched as Simone's face turned ghostly pale and decided to be frank about the whole situation."The only reason why I did everything that I did was to get that statement of forgiveness. Who was I supposed to get it from if you ended up dying?"It never even crossed my mind to compete with Conrad to be your husband. In fact, I wanted nothing more than for you two to get married. I didn't want anything or anyone to stop me from saving Ava."Simone swayed on her feet. She stared at me, her voice trembling as she spoke. For the first time, there was a trace of desperation and pleading in her tone, something even she herself hadn't noticed."You're lying, Jason. We spent all that time together, with no one but each other to count on. Are you telling me that… you never felt even an ounce of affection for Cece?""Nope," I replied firmly and without any hesitation, looking her straight in the eye as I continued earnestly, "You come from a privileged background, Ms. Parker. You're used

The slightly salty sea breeze swept through Faircove, and the cobblestone streets grew pretty hot under the sun.Ava and I opened a seafood barbecue restaurant in the busiest part of town. Using the savings we'd accumulated from working all these years, we bought a two-story storefront. It seemed like life couldn't get any better.By now, she'd fully recovered from her injuries. She had worked in security, so it went without saying that she was pretty strong physically. In fact, she handled most of the supplies that went through our restaurant. And when she wasn't busy keeping the restaurant running, she spent all her time coming up with new recipes to make for me."Take a break, darling. Come try the banana pudding I just made," Ava called out as she emerged from the kitchen with a bowl. She was wearing a simple white T-shirt today, but she didn't look any less breathtaking. The faint scar that remained at the corner of her mouth somehow made her look even more gallant, like a p

"Where is he? Where the hell is Jason!" Simone screamed as she kicked over a shelf, looking like she'd gone feral. The bodyguard was so alarmed that he lowered his head. Immediately, the entire villa was searched from top to bottom—but I was nowhere to be found.Eyes bloodshot, Simone suddenly thought of something. She grabbed Tori and screamed, "Find out who the family member he got that statement of forgiveness for really is!"In less than an hour, Tori came back with the answer. Her back was soaked through. "M-Ms. Parker, we've looked into it. It wasn't Mr. Sawyer's sister that he got released from the detention center… I-It was a woman named Ava Hurley. She used to work as a security manager for one of the company's branch offices before she was arrested for financial misconduct."Tori had to gulp before she got the rest out in a shaky voice, and her words instantly plunged Simone into an icy abyss. "Ava and Mr. Sawyer aren't siblings…"Simone grabbed the employee personne
