Chapter Thirty Three

Frederick's blood ran cold at Caroline's words. "She knows?" he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper.

Caroline nodded, tears once again brimming in her eyes. "I told her. I couldn't lie to her, Frederick. She noticed the awkward mood in the house, and asked."

The room seemed to shrink around them as Frederick tried to process Caroline's confession. Eleanor knew. The thought sent a shiver down his spine.

"What...what did she say?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Caroline's shoulders slumped, her face etched with pain. "She was...disappointed. Hurt. But she also said that we needed to make up our minds, and do the right thing."

"And... what's the right thing?" Frederick asked, his heart pounding in his chest.

Caroline shook her head, the strands of her hair brushing against her cheeks. "No need. You already said you were going back to your wife." she stepped forward, placing her hands on Frederick's shoulders. "Or have you changed your mind to be with me?".
