Chapter 2

Author: Miles Farrow
Chris arched an eyebrow. "The whole city knows you're my woman. Who would marry you?"

Selina chuckled. "You'll say anything just to save your reputation, won't you? If you're really getting a wedding license with someone else, prove it. We'd love to see who the unlucky man is."

Before I could stop her, she grabbed my bag and yanked the zip open. Everything inside spilled onto the ground. Gastric meds, hangover cures, and a box of lozenges. Mint flavored, the only thing Chris would take.

Yvonne pointed at the box of meds and hid her smile behind her hand. "Look at her. She's just like your nanny! Ten years she dated you, and she doesn't even have her own life! No wonder she can't live without you!"

The crowd cackled again.

Chris said nothing. He stared at a pen in the corner. Yvonne stepped right on it, and the pen shattered.

…

Six years ago, when Chris made the first real money of his life, he had not bought anything for himself. Instead, he took me shopping.

We wandered from the first floor of the mall all the way to the tenth, looking at everything from jewellery to handbags. In the end, the only thing we bought was that pen.

He engraved his initials onto the pen and grinned proudly. "I'll sign our marriage certificate with this!"

Every time he talked about getting the marriage license, I would tuck that pen into my bag. Valentine's, Labor Day, and even this day. I had forgotten to take it out, but perhaps that was fitting.

I did not need it anymore.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Queenie." Yvonne slipped her arm through Chris'. There was not a hint of apology in her voice.

Chris looked at the ground and gulped. "It's broken, but it's okay. I'll get you a new one later."

I shook my head.

Calmly, I said, "No. We've broken up, so it's useless."

His face fell. "What are you up to again?"

Silence fell for a moment. Everyone could see he was angry.

Yvonne chuckled and took out an exquisite fountain pen box from her bag. "I saw this overseas, and I thought it would suit you. Out with the old, in with the new."

Chris took it. "You know me so well."

Someone immediately chimed in, "Yvonne's so thoughtful."

"Chris doesn't need anyone else to worry about him."

I looked at the scattered meds and smiled.

For ten years, I took meticulous care of Chris. When the company's cash flow was in trouble, I was the one who went with him to plead with our clients.

When he had a bad gastric episode and could not even stand up, I was the one who went to all the pharmacies in town late at night to get him his meds. Then, at the beginning of this year, Yvonne came back.

Chris wanted to fulfill the unfulfilled dreams of his boyhood. He would make reservations at the restaurants Yvonne wanted to go to. He would remember every little thing she brought up.

I was his girlfriend, but I was nothing more than a stranger in that situation. My birthday was last month, and for some reason, Chris started preparing it two weeks beforehand. He told me cryptically, "I have a big surprise for you."

He lit up the candles himself on my birthday. I was moved, but then he went serious.

"I've been thinking about this, and I want to tell you something. After Yvonne came home, I realized I couldn't forget her. Let's break up."

My knife hovered over the cake, and silence fell. Then, someone burst into laughter. "Why aren't you crying? I'm going to lose money if you don't."

That was when I realized it was another betting event with me as the butt of the joke. It was also the moment I realized I was exhausted. I refused to stay a doormat and play these cruel games with those two.

I didn't care whether the breakup was real or just another joke.

"Fine."

Chris' smile froze. "What?"

"I said, fine. Let's break up."

Everyone went quiet.

His smile disappeared, and his face fell. "You're taking a joke that seriously? We've dated for ten years. Do you really think anyone else will take you?"

I said nothing, but his frustration mounted. "You love to start a scene. You should take some time to calm down. Get out. You're an eyesore."

How ironic. The birthday girl was getting kicked out of her own birthday party. So I did exactly what Chris wanted.

I left.

And after that, I stopped showing up. I stopped calling. Stopped waiting. Stopped being an eyesore.

Chris started with nothing. The starting funds came from the marriage savings my mother left for me. Though I was just a financial director cum assistant, my signatures were on the company's core business and every single major deal. That went on for ten years.I loved him, and I thought a couple should work as one, so I did not care about material wealth. But since our relationship had been severed, I would take every single cent back. And so, Zimmer Group's top legal team took over the dispute. The court quickly froze Chris' remaining liquid assets and seized his estates. I was the one to put the last straw on the proverbial camel's back. When he got the court summons, Chris was in his seized and empty office, drunk and smashing everything like a madman.Again and again he called and texted me. At first, he furiously demanded, "How could you? The company belongs to you too! Are you just going to watch it die?"In the end, he pleaded in despair, "Queenie, I'm sorry. I'm really

After three days of quiet recovery, my mother finally healed. Hector picked us up himself on discharge day. When we got home, restorative dishes were already waiting for her, all carefully prepared to help her regain her strength. He even had the Zimmers' family physician stationed at home.As my mother slowly healed, I felt a weight finally lifted off my shoulders. For some reason, Chris did not show up again. I thought he had gotten the message and backed off. However, I underestimated his arrogance and childish attitude. …A week after my mother was discharged, I went back to work and heard my colleagues gossiping animatedly in the pantry."Did you hear? Shaw Group's going around fighting Zimmer Group for projects. Yeah, the construction materials company.""Are they insane? They aren't even in Zimmer Group's league.""Beats me. Heard they pushed the price down by 30% just to snipe the supply for the south side. They're making negative gains!""And then there's the bid fo

"Married. Legally…" Chris kept muttering the same thing over and over again. His face had gone completely white, and his body swayed slightly as though he could barely stay upright. Then, his head jerked up, and he looked at me stubbornly. As if he wanted to convince himself, he said, "No. You'd never fall for another man in just a single month. I won't give up. I know you won't forgive me now, but I can wait. At least give me another chance."I said nothing. Chris wanted to say something, but in the end, he looked at me quietly and left. After he disappeared into the corner, Hector asked quietly, "Did that hit you hard?"I knew exactly what he meant. I shook my head. "I don't feel anything."He chuckled and sat me down on the bench in the lounge. He pierced the lid of the cup with a straw and handed the drink to me.Our fingers brushed, and warmth seeped from his hand into mine. I looked up at the tall, aloof man beside me. And suddenly, my thoughts drifted backward. Hector

Hector did the paperwork, while I stood outside the ER alone, my hands cold. The doctors came out a while later. "Mr. and Mrs. Zimmer, the patient fainted due to acute arrhythmia and agitated emotions. She's not in any danger. We've hooked her up to an IV and she's sleeping. She'll be fine after a few days of rest."I could finally feel at ease. The strength drained from my body, and I sank onto the long bench outside the ward. After sitting there for a while, I got up to see my mother. However, before I reached the door, I caught sight of a familiar figure at the far end of the corridor—Chris. He actually followed us all the way here. He was watching me in silence from a distance. I ignored him, looked away, and went into the ward. I held my mother's hand for a long, long time. When she finally fell asleep, I walked out quietly.Chris was still in the same spot, leaning against the wall and staring at me. But he stood up when I came out and called out to me, "Queenie."I st

"Hector Zimmer?" Chris' voice rose, and he stared at Hector in disbelief. Everyone in Seapolis' business world knew of Hector Zimmer. Hector Zimmer was the sole head of Zimmer Conglomerate—a ruthless, efficient businessman whose reputation carried weight even among the city's elite. The people who were laughing at us went quiet at the same time. They exchanged looks and did not even move a muscle. Everyone knew the Zimmers were powerful in Seapolis. One word from Hector, and their families' business would be destroyed.Hector did not even spare them a glance. He crouched slightly in front of me and gently wiped the tears from my face. "Are you hurt?"I shook my head, but the tears would not stop. I grabbed the front of his coat. "Please, Hector. Save my mom."The driver opened up the backseat door. Hector and I helped my mother get in. My hands were shaking as I asked, "How long until we get to the hospital?""Everything's arranged. They'll check on her once she gets there." He

Chris switched on the speakerphone, and the person who spoke was my mother."You were in a hurry and left the flowers behind. Can't go to that photoshoot without flowers, you know. Are you still queueing up? I'll be right there."…Not long afterward, my mother appeared carrying a bouquet of white roses. She hurried towards me, but the moment she noticed the crowd gathered around us, her steps slowed. She moved closer to my side and looked at Chris warily. "What's going on? I thought you'd broken up."Before I could say anything, Chris sneered. "She's just throwing a tantrum. You can't take her seriously. Who'd be blind enough to date her?"My mother's face fell. "My daughter broke up with you a month ago. Stop harassing her, or we'll call the cops!"The crowd jeered at us. Selina stepped up and laughed sardonically. "I know Queenie loves to lie, but why are you playing along? Oh, right, you're a liar too, so of course she grows up to be like you. How shameful. The whole city kno
