Chapter 4

Autor: Mingo
The night before I left, I went back to the Moretti estate.

I needed to retrieve the jewelry and photo albums my mother had left me.

The keypad code hadn't been changed.

But when I pushed open the bedroom door, I stood in the doorway for a long time without going in.

My room had become Chloe's walk-in closet.

The graduation photo on the wall was gone.

My trophies had been thrown into a cardboard box.

The bedspread my mother had sewn for me by hand was now under the shoe rack.

Chloe walked out of the bathroom in my silk pajamas.

When she saw me, she covered her mouth.

"Sis, why didn't you tell me you were coming?"

"This is my room."

She bit her lip.

"Ethan said your room was empty anyway."

"I had too many clothes, so he let me move in."

She added softly.

"You wouldn't begrudge me an empty room, would you?"

I walked to the vanity.

The bracelet my mother had left me was on Chloe's wrist.

"Take it off."

Ethan and Sebastian pushed the door open just then.

Ethan frowned.

"I told her to wear it."

"If Mom were alive, she'd treat Chloe as her own daughter."

"You already had all of Mom's love. Can't you share some of her things with Chloe?"

Sebastian was displeased too.

"It's just a bracelet. Do you have to make an issue out of it? Vivian, you're getting more and more selfish."

"Chloe will get married eventually. Until then, we should compensate her however we can."

I found it almost funny.

"So to compensate her, I have to give up my things too?"

I reached for the bracelet that belonged to me.

"Don't touch Chloe!"

Ethan grabbed my arm and shoved me.

My lower back hit the corner of the desk. The pain knocked the strength out of me.

Chloe cried and took the bracelet off.

"It's all my fault. Don't fight because of me."

"I'll give it back to her right now..."

As she finished speaking, her fingers loosened.

The bracelet fell to the floor and broke in two.

Chloe's face went pale.

"Sis, I'm sorry."

"I didn't mean to."

"If it makes you sad, hit me."

The more she pleaded, the more my brothers defended her.

"It's just a bracelet. What right does she have to be sad?"

"Worst case, we buy another one."

I didn't explain further.

But this wasn't just a bracelet.

It was the last thing in this house that belonged to me.

And now they'd destroyed that too.

I didn't look at them again. I picked up the broken bracelet.

I took the documents and albums my mother had left.

Then I turned and left.

Chloe chased after me and shoved an umbrella into my hand.

"Sis, it's raining outside."

She whispered, only loud enough for me to hear:

"See? They still love me more."

The next second, Ethan's voice came from behind her.

"You gave her the umbrella? What if you get rained on?"

"Don't worry about her. Let her cool off on her own."

As the door closed, I heard Sebastian sneer.

"Give her three days. She'll come crawling back to apologize."

The three men surrounded Chloe, fussing over her.

No one noticed I had left the Moretti house keys on the entryway table.

I never intended to come back.

At nine-thirty the next morning, Damian arrived at the signing hall.

Ethan and Sebastian were with him.

Chloe was wearing a custom white suit for the signing ceremony.

A diamond brooch Damian had bought her was pinned to her chest.

She looked around the empty signing hall and said timidly:

"Is Sis still mad at me?"

"Maybe I should hide first, and come out after she signs."

Damian put an arm around her shoulder.

"Why should you hide? We've spoiled her for too long. That's why she's this way."

"It's time she learned what respect means."

Ethan checked the time. His face darkened.

"Vivian's still not here?"

Sebastian sneered.

"Deliberately late, so we'll beg her."

The event coordinator rushed over.

"Mr. Damian, why are you here?"

Damian frowned.

"The signing is at ten. Did you forget?"

The coordinator looked stunned.

"But the signing was canceled two days ago."

Damian's face went dark.

"Who told you to cancel it?"

The coordinator pulled up the record.

"Ms. Vivian herself."

"And also—"

"Her flight took off at eight-forty this morning. To the European headquarters."

"By now, she's already left the country."

Half a year later, the new project was officially launched.I stood backstage at the launch event. As I adjusted my cuff, the bracelet on my wrist was visible. It had been repaired. The cracks were still there, the repair not perfect. But it looked more like mine than ever before."Chief, it's time," my assistant said.I nodded. The stage lights came on.On the big screen, my name was clearly written.Chief R&D Officer.Vivian Moretti.Applause rose from the audience.I walked to the center of the stage and completed the final product demonstration. The live camera swept across the audience.Damian sat in the last row.My two brothers sat on the other side. They didn't contact me.They didn't try to break into the backstage. After the launch, a reporter asked me:"Dr. Moretti, where did the original inspiration for this technology come from?"I glanced down at the bracelet."From my mother.""She told me that broken things can be fixed.""But once fixed, you don't have to pretend the c

(Vivian's POV)The live feed reached Europe.I glanced at it once, then closed the page.A late admission wasn't compensation. It was just a bill he had to pay.A week later, I sent new authorization terms to Ethan. The group would pay eight years of retroactive patent fees.Publicly restore all my credits.Return the personal assets my mother had left me.Separate my shares from the family estate. From then on, I would maintain only a shareholder relationship with the Moretti family. No family privileges. No family obligations.Ethan read it and went pale. The last clause was a single sentence.[No one may use our mother's dying wish to demand that Vivian take care of Chloe.]The board pressured him to sign. But he sat there for a long time. The lawyer reminded him:"Chairman, if you don't sign by midnight, the authorization negotiations terminate automatically."Ethan picked up the pen."She really wants to cut all ties with the Moretti family?"The lawyer's tone was calm."Ms. Vivia

(Vivian's POV)Not long after, Ethan's email received my quotation.Patent usage fees. Historical arrears. Restoration of authorship. Infringement compensation. Not a single item missing. The total was enough to drain most of the group's liquid capital.Ethan laughed angrily."We're family. Do you have to calculate everything so clearly?"On the other end of the screen, I finally replied:[You never treated me as family.][Since that's the case, everything follows the contract.]The conference room was dead silent. The countdown reached its final minute. The equipment screens went dark simultaneously. The technical director closed his eyes."The production line has stopped."News of the production line shutdown quickly reached Damian's office. He'd just walked in when the project manager blocked him."President, our partners are asking to postpone the signing.""The group can't provide patent authorization proof."Damian loosened his tie."Vivian and I grew up together.""I can sign on

The next morning, the group's technical department was in chaos. The core system flashed an authorization expiration notice. All the lab equipment entered countdown mode.Ethan threw the documents onto the conference table."Work around those three patents.""I need an alternative by today."The technical director's face was pale."Chairman, we can't work around them.""The underlying algorithm, the sensor components, the calibration system—they're all connected.""Forcing a replacement means redoing the entire project."Ethan frowned."The company employs all of you, and none of you can match one person?"No one in the conference room spoke. The technical director pushed a stack of old files forward."The first version of the model was made by Ms. Vivian.""The three subsequent upgrades were also hers.""We were only responsible for testing and implementation."Sebastian flipped through the files. At the bottom of every page was Vivian's signature. The earliest date went back eight ye

(Third Person POV)Damian froze."What is she doing at the European headquarters? She's not even managing the project anymore?"Sebastian sneered."She's blowing this up on purpose.""First she cancels the signing, then she runs off to headquarters. Isn't she just trying to force us to cave?"Chloe said quietly:"Does Sis think that if she disappears, everyone will suddenly realize how important she is?"Ethan's mouth twisted coldly."She's been like this since she was little.""The bigger the scene, the higher the台阶 she wants when she comes back.""Nobody comforts her this time.
