Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Mohini
Diane agreed without hesitation.

"We don't need the CEO's approval when someone in a nonmanagement role resigns. I'll get it done as soon as I can."

I opened Adrian's social feed again.

He'd changed his profile picture.

It matched Claire's.

Underneath was a new post.

"A woman I went on a blind date with wouldn't leave me alone. Luckily, someone stepped in as my fake girlfriend. She used to be my actual girlfriend, so she's had plenty of practice."

When Claire and I first started dating, I'd kept asking her to use matching profile pictures with me.

She always had a reason to refuse.

Too much trouble. Too childish. People would talk.

Now Claire, who had always used a formal headshot, had replaced it with a cartoon character.

The next day, she called me in her most professional voice.

"You're coming to a client dinner. Pay attention, and make sure you handle the drinks."

That confused me. Claire could drink almost anyone under the table. Why would she need me to cover for her?

Before I could ask, Adrian laughed in the background.

"You still remember I can't drink? I'm impressed.

"Here. You've earned a sip of my coffee."

They laughed together. I stared at nothing and said, "Okay."

At the restaurant, Claire exchanged pleasantries with the prospective partners.

As they discussed the project, she kept signaling for me to take the drinks meant for Adrian.

Someone noticed how close they were and smiled.

"You two make quite a pair. Are you seeing anyone, Claire?"

She glanced at me. Hesitation flickered across her face.

Then we answered together.

"No."

We'd said exactly the same thing. But she turned to stare at me as if I'd said something shocking.

When the others stepped out to the restroom, my phone buzzed.

"Just playing along. Don't take it personally."

I gave a thin smile.

There wasn't much left to take personally.

When it was time to sign the contract, Marlene Voss let her gaze linger on me.

Then her hand settled on my shoulder. She kept touching me, pushing a little farther each time.

I recoiled in disgust and knocked over a glass of red wine.

It spilled onto Adrian's pants.

Claire immediately reached for a handkerchief and began dabbing at the stain.

"What's wrong with you?" she snapped at me. "Why are you suddenly so clumsy?"

Adrian waved it off, looking embarrassed.

"It's just a pair of pants. They'll wash."

She paused, offended on his behalf.

"Aren't these the ones I bought for your birthday? I stood in line forever to get them. Don't you remember?"

She hadn't noticed Marlene groping me.

She'd noticed a stain on something she'd given Adrian.

Of course, she'd told me before that dealing with harassment was part of the job when you worked with clients.

So every time a woman put her hands on me, I'd endured it.

But a mutual friend had once told me what Claire did when another woman asked Adrian for his number. She'd gone after her with a bottle, and the whole thing had ended at a police station.

When I asked Claire about it, she took a sip of her drink, frowned, and claimed she didn't remember.

Yet years later, she remembered every detail of a pair of pants.

Conversation picked up around the table again.

I lowered my head and scrolled through my contacts until I found a number I hadn't used in a long time.

"You said there would always be a job for me. Does that offer still stand?"

Claire frowned, as if the words had cut her."What did you say…"She couldn't believe I'd said it. Couldn't believe how completely I meant it.I held her gaze and repeated myself."I said, I don't love you anymore."Did you hear me?"Then I walked away without looking back. For the next few days, she kept hanging around outside my office building. My new coworkers noticed."Is that your girlfriend? She's gorgeous.""She really can't stay away from you, huh? Lucky guy."I gave them a strained smile."She hasn't been my girlfriend for a while."The following morning, Adrian called. He was furious before I'd even said hello."Did you tell Claire to blacklist me across the industry?"You think this is going to make me back off? Think again."I kept my voice level."I don't know what you're talking about."If she's blacklisting you, take it up with her. Why are you calling me?"He gave a short, ugly laugh."Don't play innocent."She would never do this unless you put h

Owen's POVWhen I landed in London, my former boss, Evelyn Grant, was waiting at the airport herself. From the passenger seat, I watched the city pass outside the window. Being back felt unreal.I should have stayed here years ago, kept my department-manager job, and built a life.Instead, I'd insisted on going back to Chicago to help Claire build her company.Evelyn had hated to see me go."A relationship is no guarantee of a future," she'd told me. "Are you sure you want to give up your career for her?"I'd spent all night thinking about it.Then I'd packed my suitcase anyway.I thought Claire would give me a comparable position. I thought she'd never let me down.I couldn't have been more wrong."Thank you, Evelyn," I said. I meant every word.Once I started at her company, things began looking up.Then my old work group chat started filling with messages."Owen, we were wrong about what happened. I'm sorry.""I can't believe Adrian staged the whole thing. Shows how m

Claire stood and walked out of the restaurant in front of everyone."What's gotten into her?"They looked at one another, bewildered.Only Adrian stayed silent, his hands curling into fists.Claire opened the front door at home and stopped. The place that had always felt warm and lived-in was empty."How is it this empty?"She went to the bedroom.Owen's watches were gone from the dresser. His side of the closet had been cleared out.She called him again, refusing to accept it.The same mechanical voice answered."Owen…"Standing in the empty room, she could feel his absence everywhere. For the next few days, she waited for a reply, distracted and restless.Nothing came.It was as if he'd vanished. Someone new had even been hired to replace him. Then, passing the break room, she heard laughter."Wait. Seriously? You changed those figures?""Keep your voice down." Sadie Brennan lowered hers. "He upset Adrian. I couldn't stand him."Adrian was crying when he came to me

"This is final. We're over."Claire stared at the message. She couldn't understand what had gotten into Owen. First he kept threatening to break up. Now he'd quit a job he'd spent five years building."When did this happen? Why wasn't I told?"Diane looked at her blankly."He wasn't management. He wanted to leave, so I processed it. You said resignations at his level didn't need to come to you."Something tightened in Claire's chest. She picked up his resignation letter and looked at the date. It was the night he'd come home in the rain. He'd been soaked, shivering where he stood. But Adrian had called about the woman from his blind date who wouldn't leave him alone…Claire tightened her grip on the paper.Had Owen really quit over something that small? Before she could make sense of it, Adrian came in."Maybe he's still angry with us."I did make a scene today. Crying in front of everyone like that. I must have embarrassed him."Claire looked at his miserable face and s

She didn't answer until the next day."What is this nonsense? You're acting more like a spoiled child every day."Then another message."Bring the files from my study to the office."She'd only remembered to read my message because she needed an errand run.But when I arrived with the files, everyone was staring at me.Adrian sat in a chair, crying. He clutched a contract when he saw me, all innocence."Owen, everything was fine with the project yesterday. Why did you change all the figures? The client wants to cancel."I worked hard for that promotion. Was this really necessary?"No one questioned him.I'd argued with Claire about his promotion the day before. As far as they were concerned, that made me guilty.I looked at her."You think I did it, too?"She frowned, disgust flickering across her face."No one here has a stronger motive. Who else would it be?"I never thought you'd stoop this low."A coworker who'd always disliked me spoke up."Should I ask security

When I got to work the next morning, excited voices spilled out of the break room."Adrian landed that deal yesterday, and Claire promoted him today. Must be nice.""Come on. Haven't you seen their matching pictures? It's obvious.""There's more to it than that. I saw his posts. They used to date. Looks like they're back together."I stopped in the hallway, my fists tightening.A few years ago, Claire would never have allowed people to talk like that.Three years earlier, I'd worried that all the drinking at business dinners was hurting her stomach. I made her a gentle lunch at home and brought it to her office. She dumped it into the dog bowl in front of everyone."Haven't you heard people talking about us?" she shouted. "Stop doing stupid things that give them the wrong idea."She docked my bonus and banned me from her office.Today, I opened her door anyway.I wanted to know what, exactly, was wrong with me.Claire kept working through the documents on her desk. She didn
