Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Mohini
She didn't answer until the next day.

"What is this nonsense? You're acting more like a spoiled child every day."

Then another message.

"Bring the files from my study to the office."

She'd only remembered to read my message because she needed an errand run.

But when I arrived with the files, everyone was staring at me.

Adrian sat in a chair, crying.

He clutched a contract when he saw me, all innocence.

"Owen, everything was fine with the project yesterday. Why did you change all the figures? The client wants to cancel.

"I worked hard for that promotion. Was this really necessary?"

No one questioned him.

I'd argued with Claire about his promotion the day before. As far as they were concerned, that made me guilty.

I looked at her.

"You think I did it, too?"

She frowned, disgust flickering across her face.

"No one here has a stronger motive. Who else would it be?

"I never thought you'd stoop this low."

A coworker who'd always disliked me spoke up.

"Should I ask security for the camera footage? Then he can stop pretending."

"No need." Claire cut him off immediately, her eyes fixed on me.

"It's obvious he did it. Why waste another department's time?"

Then I understood.

She could check the footage. She could give me a chance to prove my innocence.

Instead, to make sure no one accused her of favoring me, she'd decided I was guilty.

"Cancel all his performance pay and bonuses. Reassign him to reception."

She knew I'd started at the front desk. I'd worked my way up from there.

With one sentence, she sent me all the way back.

Five years of late nights and everything I'd poured into that place, thrown away as if they meant nothing.

Claire personally processed my suspension.

"You can come back when you're ready to admit what you did."

Then the clients began removing me from their contacts and blocking me.

My name vanished from the projects I'd won. My bonuses were clawed back.

Five years of professional relationships disappeared overnight.

As I cleared my desk, my coworkers made no effort to lower their voices.

"He really thought he could steal Adrian's girlfriend? He knew they were together."

"No shame at all. Thought Claire would let him get away with anything. Guess he knows better now."

Adrian's innocent expression seemed to say, See? I still win.

I walked past him.

Claire came toward me.

"Think of it as some time off. I've given Adrian your projects. He's better suited to them.

"You started in reception. You know the job. And putting you back there will stop anyone from questioning our relationship."

For once, she actually reached to help me carry something.

I pulled away before I could think.

Her obsession with appearances had made me a target for years.

Everyone thought she hated me. They left me out of company dinners. Fed me bad information on projects so I'd lose my bonus when things went wrong.

Eventually, they started locking me in the restroom.

"She obviously doesn't want you here. Take the hint and get out."

I developed an anxiety disorder. I filed complaint after complaint.

Claire never read a single one.

I didn't want her concern now.

I carried my box out without looking at her again and got into a cab for the airport.

Just before I boarded, I sent one last message.

"This is final. We're over."

I blocked her, deleted her number, and took out my SIM card.

Third-person POV

Owen didn't send the apology Claire had come to expect.

Unease settled in her chest.

That evening, she went to HR to have him reinstated in his old role.

Diane looked confused.

"But Owen's already resigned."

Claire went still.

Then a message appeared on her phone.

Claire frowned, as if the words had cut her."What did you say…"She couldn't believe I'd said it. Couldn't believe how completely I meant it.I held her gaze and repeated myself."I said, I don't love you anymore."Did you hear me?"Then I walked away without looking back. For the next few days, she kept hanging around outside my office building. My new coworkers noticed."Is that your girlfriend? She's gorgeous.""She really can't stay away from you, huh? Lucky guy."I gave them a strained smile."She hasn't been my girlfriend for a while."The following morning, Adrian called. He was furious before I'd even said hello."Did you tell Claire to blacklist me across the industry?"You think this is going to make me back off? Think again."I kept my voice level."I don't know what you're talking about."If she's blacklisting you, take it up with her. Why are you calling me?"He gave a short, ugly laugh."Don't play innocent."She would never do this unless you put h

Owen's POVWhen I landed in London, my former boss, Evelyn Grant, was waiting at the airport herself. From the passenger seat, I watched the city pass outside the window. Being back felt unreal.I should have stayed here years ago, kept my department-manager job, and built a life.Instead, I'd insisted on going back to Chicago to help Claire build her company.Evelyn had hated to see me go."A relationship is no guarantee of a future," she'd told me. "Are you sure you want to give up your career for her?"I'd spent all night thinking about it.Then I'd packed my suitcase anyway.I thought Claire would give me a comparable position. I thought she'd never let me down.I couldn't have been more wrong."Thank you, Evelyn," I said. I meant every word.Once I started at her company, things began looking up.Then my old work group chat started filling with messages."Owen, we were wrong about what happened. I'm sorry.""I can't believe Adrian staged the whole thing. Shows how m

Claire stood and walked out of the restaurant in front of everyone."What's gotten into her?"They looked at one another, bewildered.Only Adrian stayed silent, his hands curling into fists.Claire opened the front door at home and stopped. The place that had always felt warm and lived-in was empty."How is it this empty?"She went to the bedroom.Owen's watches were gone from the dresser. His side of the closet had been cleared out.She called him again, refusing to accept it.The same mechanical voice answered."Owen…"Standing in the empty room, she could feel his absence everywhere. For the next few days, she waited for a reply, distracted and restless.Nothing came.It was as if he'd vanished. Someone new had even been hired to replace him. Then, passing the break room, she heard laughter."Wait. Seriously? You changed those figures?""Keep your voice down." Sadie Brennan lowered hers. "He upset Adrian. I couldn't stand him."Adrian was crying when he came to me

"This is final. We're over."Claire stared at the message. She couldn't understand what had gotten into Owen. First he kept threatening to break up. Now he'd quit a job he'd spent five years building."When did this happen? Why wasn't I told?"Diane looked at her blankly."He wasn't management. He wanted to leave, so I processed it. You said resignations at his level didn't need to come to you."Something tightened in Claire's chest. She picked up his resignation letter and looked at the date. It was the night he'd come home in the rain. He'd been soaked, shivering where he stood. But Adrian had called about the woman from his blind date who wouldn't leave him alone…Claire tightened her grip on the paper.Had Owen really quit over something that small? Before she could make sense of it, Adrian came in."Maybe he's still angry with us."I did make a scene today. Crying in front of everyone like that. I must have embarrassed him."Claire looked at his miserable face and s

When I got to work the next morning, excited voices spilled out of the break room."Adrian landed that deal yesterday, and Claire promoted him today. Must be nice.""Come on. Haven't you seen their matching pictures? It's obvious.""There's more to it than that. I saw his posts. They used to date. Looks like they're back together."I stopped in the hallway, my fists tightening.A few years ago, Claire would never have allowed people to talk like that.Three years earlier, I'd worried that all the drinking at business dinners was hurting her stomach. I made her a gentle lunch at home and brought it to her office. She dumped it into the dog bowl in front of everyone."Haven't you heard people talking about us?" she shouted. "Stop doing stupid things that give them the wrong idea."She docked my bonus and banned me from her office.Today, I opened her door anyway.I wanted to know what, exactly, was wrong with me.Claire kept working through the documents on her desk.
