Chapter 2 Trickling Away

Penulis: The Bright Moon
I shot up from the couch. "You're giving the company's shares to Rainie?"

He was tying his tie and moving out. "Chris' company ran into some trouble a while ago, and she didn't get much in the divorce."

"That doesn't mean you can give her the shares. They're mine…"

"Not like you'll use them." Zach frowned and looked at me as if that should have been obvious.

My heart sank.

Five years ago, I gave up my chance to return to the real world just to save him. The price I paid was getting demoted to a nameless supporting character. My fate was to stay as a regular woman forever.

Fame, fortune, and business ownership would never be mine.

Even though I had given him nearly half the funds he needed, all the money had been placed under his name. And I was only appointed as the head of a minor department.

Zach once swore that fortune was mine, but now he was giving it all to Rainie. The door opened and closed again. He was gone.

A notification window popped up before me. "You will be parted from this body after thirty hours. The original soul will take over, and the story will resume its course."

I bit my lip tightly and pressed the 'Yes' button. The countdown began. If he thought I had no use for the shares, then leaving was my only answer.

By noon, the share transfer was complete. Zach had reserved a parlor to welcome our new shareholder, and he was raising toasts with everyone with Rainie beside him.

When he got to my table, he smiled politely. "Thanks for your hard work, finance. You'll get a 10% increment for this year's bonus." He raised a toast to everyone but me.

My throat tightened up. I was going to pull my hand back when Rainie smiled at me. "It's been a while, Diana. A toast to you."

When our glasses clanged, she pushed her hand forward just a little. I nearly lost my grip, and the alcohol splashed all over my chest before trickling down my shirt.

The room fell into an awkward silence. No one knew what to do.

My lips turned into a thin line. I took some tissues and saw, through the corner of my eye, Zach taking Rainie's glass away.

"Sorry, she can't have any alcohol. I'll do it for her." He drained the glass in one go.

Everyone immediately started teasing him with good-natured laughter.

"Oh, I can see the protectiveness, Mr. Lawson. You never take alcohol!"

Rainie's cheeks went red, and she leaned closer to him. Zach said nothing, but I saw the smile hanging on his lips.

I wiped the alcohol as hard as I could, until my neck was red and scraped. My phone buzzed with a message from Zach. It was already the fourth one that night.

"Watch yourself. We need to make sure no rumors start. The company can't handle any rumors right now."

"Stop drinking. You're driving Rainie home."

"She's not in the best headspace right now, so don't say anything to her."

"You shouldn't have gotten distracted. Good thing I was fast enough, or else someone would've seen something."

I smiled bitterly. Rainie was everything he could care about. Five years ago, I firmly believed that he loved me. Now, I finally saw it clearly. His love had somehow slowly trickled away from me and gone back to where it originally was.

After the event, I drove Rainie home. Zach sat with her in the backseat, leaving me alone in the front like a common driver.

Rainie would steal glances at me on the way. She asked softly, "What have you been up to, Diana? I haven't heard much from you."

Zach answered for me, "She's been working for me, nothing else."

She hung her head low and sighed. "You were the one who matched Chris and me together. In the end, we still got divorced. Sorry I wasted your efforts."

Through the rear-view mirror, I saw Zach giving me a reproachful look, then he soothed her gently, "Don't bring up the past."

I said nothing the whole way, but after they got out of the car, I heaved a sigh.

Then, I raised my head and saw roses decorating every inch of Rainie's house.

That reminded me—I had not even seen the flower samples for the wedding.

The passenger seat door swung open, and Zach got in. "Home. I'm tired."

My phone was still open to the webnovel. There was only one chapter left in the story."Will you return to the world of the novel and see Zach one last time?"Two choices stood before me. Five years ago, I told the system I would not regret my choice. Now, I would say the same.I pressed 'No.'"Give him a message from me. Tell him I never guilt tripped him. I revived him because I loved him, and that was also why I stayed with him all the way through recovery. But it's in the past now, so I won't see him again."I paused for a moment and added, "Goodbye."The notification window disappeared. "Goodbye."….A few days later, I went into the story's final chapter. Chris' new company was listed, and he married the unnamed girl. The wedding was grand, far grander than the one he had with Rainie.Rainie was gone. Someone saw her at the airport, alone with luggage in tow. No one knew where she was going. As for the shares, she ultimately lost them. She tried to argue with a lawyer a

Chris gave her a deadpan look. "You can talk right here. I don't want my fiancee to get the wrong idea."Rainie placed the share transfer agreement on the table. "It's Zach's shares, and I have them. I know your company needs funds. I can invest."Chris looked at the document but did not take it. "I don't need funds."Rainie was stunned. "What? But your company went under.""And I'm telling you I don't need the funds. Leave. I'm in a pretty good place in life, and I don't want to get entangled with my past."Rainie was shown out. However, on her way back to Zach, she received a call. Zach had woken up, and he had taken back the shares.Rainie hurried to the hospital and went into Zach's ward. He was awake and staring at the ceiling. "What's with the shares, Zach?"Zach said raspily, "They were for Diana."Two men crushed her confidence back to back, and she hurled her bag furiously. "Are you mad? She told you that you're just her boss! Why'd you give her the shares?""She's

"Then, let's change the subject. What do you think about this bag? And this dress? I'm thinking of going to Dewmont for my graduation trip, but Hector said the dress is too revealing. Honestly, that guy lives in the last century. Maybe I should break up with him. We're going our separate ways after graduation anyway."My best friend kept talking and talking. When I still did not react, she tore open a bag of chips and shoved one into my mouth.I felt something filling up my mouth, and I looked at her. "What?"Frustrated, my best friend said, "Oh, look alive, will you, Seraphina? It's just your proposal getting shot down, big deal. I got shot down four times, and now I'm on my fifth attempt!"My brain buzzed, and I snapped out of it. Yeah, I was back. Six years in the novel was only six seconds in the real world. I was still a senior student who was tortured by her research proposal. That world had nothing to do with me anymore. For a month or so after that, my attention was fully

Zach clenched his teeth and shoved Rainie away. "Don't play dumb! You just texted me a second ago! Tell me, why? Is it the shares? The ring? Or because I never want to talk about our relationship?"Diana frowned. "Our relationship? I'm just a part of the founding team, and you're my boss. Honestly, are you trying to skip paying me this month?"She unlocked her phone and showed Zach her chat history. "And our last conversation was yesterday. You told me to handle the share transfer."He was called Mr. Lawson in the chat, but Zach had seen my chat before. In my phone, his name had always been Zach. That conversation from a few minutes ago was gone. Only the chat history from yesterday remained."Two more documents about the share transfer need your signature, sir. Can you do it now?""I'm with Rainie. I'll do it in the afternoon.""Of course, sir. I'll leave them on your desk.""Okay."Every single line showed courtesy and professionalism that belonged to an employer and an emplo

I was hovering in the air and saw the body still in the same spot. That was when I realized I had not left right away. And that was how I saw Zach's panic. All that talk about avoiding rumors and considering the bigger picture was thrown out the window. He shoved the crowd away and shouted at Diana, "Explain! What do you mean, you're leaving?"The employees were confused. "What's he talking about? Diana's right here.""And he was introducing Ms. Quinton. Now, he's going for Diana?"Rainie froze for a moment, and she said softly, "Diana's right here, Zach. Cam down."None of their words reached Zach. He stood before Diana and realized her face was stiff. There was nothing in her eyes, not even his reflection. Unease flickered in his chest. He reached out and grabbed her finger."You're scaring me, Diana."Then, Diana's eyes filled with light, and she shoved him away as if she was shocked. "What are you doing, sir?" She stepped back in displeasure and looked at her phone. "My depa

"You're the reason I lost everything overnight. If it weren't for you, I never would have gotten into that car accident, nor would I have gotten paralyzed. You owe me those years."He squashed the baby's breath on his way out. All the strength was sucked out of my body, and I was taken back to the day he confessed to me despite the risks. Back then, he had not cared that the system might erase him. He had not cared if he lost everything. He told me what he feared most was a world without me. All that love he had for me had wilted, leaving nothing but fallen, squashed hopes. It was my last day in this world, and I went to work as usual. The company group chat was unusually lively."Check out the boss lady's office. It's filled with roses from the boss."I opened up the picture and noticed the office filled with a mountain of stuff. Roses, tea, carpet, and even a sofa bed. Before he confessed his love for me, Zach poured all his care and affection into Rainie the same way. Even whe
