Chapter 4

Penulis: Clouded View
The next morning, I opened my laptop to go through the onboarding paperwork for my new job.

A few folders were missing from the desktop. I checked the recycle bin, but they weren't there either.

My design drafts, contract, and project files that I'd spent several late nights putting together were all gone.

I opened the search bar and typed the file names in again. But all I got was the message, "No matching items found."

I walked out of my room with my laptop in my arms. Emily was brushing her teeth in the bathroom when I found her. "Did you use my laptop last night?"

With her toothbrush still in her mouth, she gave me a sleepy nod. "I had some urgent work to finish and didn't have my laptop with me. Julian said yours was fine to use, so I borrowed it."

"But why are my files missing?"

She spat out her mouthwash, seemingly more awake now. "I accidentally deleted them."

"Those were my onboarding documents for my new job, along with design drafts I'd spent ages preparing."

Emily froze. "I'm sorry. I didn't know you needed them today. The folders were just sitting there on the desktop. I thought they were old stuff from your last company."

Hearing the commotion, Julian came over from the living room.

He turned to Emily first, smiling as he said, "Emmie, how do you always manage to be so careless?"

Only after saying that did he turn to me. "Come on, Anna. Emmie didn't do it on purpose. You're good at what you do, so redoing a few documents will take you no time."

"They're due today."

"Didn't you just get laid off? You've got all the time in the world now. What's the harm in submitting them a day late?"

I just looked at him. "So you're saying it's no big deal that my files got deleted?"

Julian's brow furrowed. "I didn't say that. It's Emmie's first departmental presentation, and she just got promoted.

"She can't afford any slip-ups right now. You've always been good at handling this kind of thing, haven't you? Surely redoing it won't be too hard for you."

The sound of a key turning came from the front door. Francis and Henry walked in with breakfast, just in time to hear his last sentence.

Francis set the bags on the table. "What's going on? What's with all the arguing this early in the morning?"

Julian briefly explained what had happened. Francis turned to me, grabbing a cup of coffee. "Anna, have something to eat first. It's just a few design drafts. You work fast, so you'll redo them in no time."

Henry opened the breakfast boxes. "Emmie didn't do it on purpose. Stop holding it against her. Eat first, then look for the files after."

As I looked at the breakfast spread, I abruptly asked, "Did you get the pastries that I like?"

When no one answered, I gave a small laugh. "Let me guess—you only got bagels, because those are Emmie's favorite, right?"

Julian's face darkened. "It's just breakfast. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it?"

Francis added, "Just eat for now. Don't get worked up over something so trivial."

Henry frowned as well. "If your files are gone, then just redo them. If we're out of food, we can always just go get some more. Why are you being so difficult today?"

I stared at them, the frustration I'd been bottling up for days finally rising to my throat. "You people always say it's just this or just that to me."

I picked up my laptop. "But when have any of you ever thought that the things that matter to me deserve to be taken seriously?"

No one said a word. I turned and walked out the door. At the repair shop, the technician took my laptop and spent a long time checking it.

"If the files were accidentally deleted, don't save anything else to the drive for now. We should be able to recover some of them."

I sat nearby and waited. Two hours later, most of my files had been recovered.

By the time I got home, they'd all left for work. I packed my clothes, documents, and laptop into a box. I then left the spare house key on the dining table.

When I got to the airport, my phone buzzed again.

Julian had sent me a message. "Did Emmie leave her USB drive at home? Drop it off at her office for her."

I stared at the message for a moment, then blocked him without another thought. Next, I removed Emily, Francis, and Henry from my contacts.

Last of all, I left our five-member group chat.

As the plane climbed above the clouds, the city slowly grew smaller in the window. From now on, I'd never have to squeeze myself into their group photos again.

Half a year later, the project I led officially launched.During the project review, the client singled me out for praise, and the head of the company decided to put me in charge of a new project team. After the meeting, Rose handed me a document. "Congratulations, Ms. Harmon."I took it with a smile. "You can stop being so formal now.""Not a chance. You're now in charge of one of the company's key projects."That evening, the team went out for dinner. Katie had double-checked my dietary restrictions beforehand, and the drinks on the table had been switched to lemonade. When someone suggested a photo, I instinctively started to edge off to the side. Katie grabbed my arm. "Anna, you're standing in the middle."I looked at the frame on the phone screen before finally moving to the middle. When the shutter clicked, I was dead center.Everyone was looking at the camera. When I got home, Rose sent over the celebration photos and asked if she should post them on social media.I tho

Even after I turned them down, they still tried to reach me a few more times.Julian mailed my old books and photo albums to the company front desk. I asked Rose to collect the package for me. When I opened it, I found a letter inside. It was a very short letter. "These things belong to you, so I'm returning them. I'm sorry."I kept the photo albums and tossed the letter straight into the trash.Francis came by once after that.He didn't come inside. He just handed the security guard a paper bag. Inside were a few books I'd left behind during my college days.I accepted the books and asked the receptionist to tell him not to send me anything else. The receptionist asked if I wanted to return the paper bag. "There's no need."I took the books back to my office and waited until after work to open them.My name, which I'd written on the title page back in college, was still there, though the ink had faded a little.Flipping through, I found an old ticket stub slipped between the

The four waited outside my office building for three days. On the first day, I left through the underground parking lot, avoiding the main entrance altogether. On the second day, the receptionist told me they were still out there, so I stayed in the meeting room and finished revising the last report before clocking out.On the third afternoon, Rose came over to me. "Are you planning to avoid them forever?""They'll leave eventually.""But they've already been waiting for three days."I closed my laptop. "Then I'll just go see them."When I walked out of the building, the four of them were standing by the curb. The moment Julian saw me, he stepped forward. "Anna."I stopped in front of him. "What do you want from me?"Emily looked at me, exhaustion written all over her face. "I'm sorry."Her voice grew quieter after apologizing. "I was the one who deleted the files on your computer. At the time, all I could think about was my own presentation."I didn't know you needed them th

After joining Rose's company, I spent the first two days getting familiar with the project documents. The client had changed project leads twice, and the documents were scattered across several departments, with figures in the progress reports that wouldn’t reconcile.Rose handed me the files. "We originally planned to assign this project to someone else, but the client hasn't been happy with anyone so far. Take a look and see if you can handle it."I flipped through to the last page before asking, "Aren't we scheduled to give another presentation to them next week?""That's right.""Then we still have time."I reviewed the list of people in charge and their tasks, noting every missing piece of information along the way. That afternoon, I shared the new progress sheet in the project group chat. After looking it over, Katie Ruiz asked, "Anna, was this part something I missed earlier?""It's not that you missed it. The source data upstream simply changed. Get in touch with the su

Early the next morning, Julian went to my old company. The receptionist recognized him and politely said, "Ms. Harmon had already finished her exit paperwork yesterday.""Did she leave a forwarding address?""I'm afraid we can't share that.""Do you know which company she went to?"The receptionist shook her head again. "Ms. Harmon didn't say."Julian stood in the lobby, suddenly at a loss for what to ask next. The security guard recognized him. "Ms. Harmon came out holding quite a few things yesterday and had to wait for a while for a taxi. She seemed pretty calm when she left.""Did she get in touch with anyone?""I didn't notice."Francis tried HR, while Henry asked some of my former team members downstairs if they'd heard anything. They all got pretty much the same answers.I'd gone through the exit process, recovered the files on my laptop, and left without telling anyone where I was going.Back in the car, Julian opened his phone again. My profile picture was still the

Once the plane took off, I switched my phone to airplane mode. While I was still at the airport, I'd already blocked Julian, Emily, Francis, and Henry everywhere and left the group chat that had been part of my life for years. That left only four people in the group chat. They'd probably notice soon enough. But by then, I'd already be on my way to a new city.Rose was waiting for me at the arrivals exit. Seeing that all I had was one suitcase, she took my laptop bag from me. "Where's the rest of your stuff?""I'm leaving the rest behind for now."She gave me a look but didn't press me for an explanation. "The company's set you up with a short-term rental near the office. Once you get your bearings, you can take your time finding a place of your own."I gave a nod. Once the car got moving, I rested my forehead against the window. This city wasn't so different from the one I'd left behind. Cars were still backed up at the intersections, while the fading daylight gave way to dusk.
