Chapter 3

Author: Clouded View
Emily's pajamas hung on the back of the guest room door, her skincare products lined up along the bathroom counter. Even the fridge was stocked with her favorite orange soda.

As for the lemonade I always drank, it hadn't been in the fridge for a long time. Julian made dinner that evening.

When Emily sat down at the table, she mentioned her stomach was acting up, so he slid the mildest dish right in front of her.

Francis removed the peppers from her plate, whereas Henry pushed a glass of warm water toward her. "Eat slowly. You wouldn't want your stomach acting up again."

I kept my head down and ate. After dinner, I brought the plates into the kitchen.

No one asked me to do it or even reminded me. As long as Emily was around, washing dishes was just my job.

She always said her hands were for drafting and she had just gotten her nails done. And Julian would say cold water didn't agree with her because her stomach was weak.

They'd said those things so many times that even I had gotten used to hearing them. As I turned on the tap, laughter from the living room slipped in through the narrow gap in the door.

After I'd washed the last dish, dried my hands, and walked back out, I realized the living room lights were off.

The TV cast a pale white glow across the room as the horror movie on the screen had just reached a scene in the hallway of an abandoned hospital.

Emily patted the spot beside Julian. "Anna, come here! We saved you a spot."

Only when I walked over did I notice the two drinks on the coffee table.

Mine was a buy-one-get-one-free mango smoothie. I was allergic to mangoes. They all knew that.

The cup in front of Emily, on the other hand, was her favorite strawberry smoothie.

Julian glanced at me. "Why haven't you touched yours?"

"I'm allergic."

"Then don't drink it. Just leave it there."

Emily quickly said, "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know. How about I give you mine instead?"

Julian slid the smoothie to the side. "Just drink yours. If she doesn't want hers, then so be it."

A shrill scream from the movie suddenly pierced the room. Emily grabbed Julian's wrist in fright, and he immediately took her hand. "Let's stop watching. The next part's probably even scarier."

The three of them gathered around her, talking over each other to comfort her. Nobody noticed me perched on the far edge of the couch.

As I stared at that mango smoothie, I suddenly thought back to our early college days.

Back then, there were only four of us. Julian, Francis, Henry, and I. We went to class together, ate together, and even went on weekend drives out to the countryside.

When Emily transferred into our program, she and I were the first to become close. She'd loop her arm through mine and say, "From now on, there'll be five of us!"

I was so happy then. I even thought of her as my best friend. But later, whenever we went on trips, I was always the one stuck in the middle seat in the back of the five-seater.

They'd give the front passenger seat to Emily because she said she got carsick easily. Once, when we were short one movie ticket, Julian waved me off, telling me to wait for the next showing.

Another time, we all went to a craft shop in a mall to make our own jewelry. But by the time I'd finished paying and looked up, everyone had disappeared. I searched the mall for ages before finally finding them at a restaurant.

When Henry saw me, all he said was, "Emmie was getting hungry, so we went ahead and ordered."

It hadn't even occurred to them to send me a text. Another scream came from the movie.

Emily curled up in Julian's arms, with Francis and Henry both laughing as they tried to make her feel better.

I looked away and went back to my room. I packed my clothes, documents, laptop charger, and everything else into my suitcase.

My laptop was still on the desk. I picked up my phone to message Rose. "I've already booked my flight. I'll leave tomorrow once I've taken care of everything."

Rose's reply came quickly. "Okay. I'll be waiting for you at the airport."

After putting my phone away, I zipped my suitcase shut.

Half a year later, the project I led officially launched.During the project review, the client singled me out for praise, and the head of the company decided to put me in charge of a new project team. After the meeting, Rose handed me a document. "Congratulations, Ms. Harmon."I took it with a smile. "You can stop being so formal now.""Not a chance. You're now in charge of one of the company's key projects."That evening, the team went out for dinner. Katie had double-checked my dietary restrictions beforehand, and the drinks on the table had been switched to lemonade. When someone suggested a photo, I instinctively started to edge off to the side. Katie grabbed my arm. "Anna, you're standing in the middle."I looked at the frame on the phone screen before finally moving to the middle. When the shutter clicked, I was dead center.Everyone was looking at the camera. When I got home, Rose sent over the celebration photos and asked if she should post them on social media.I tho

Even after I turned them down, they still tried to reach me a few more times.Julian mailed my old books and photo albums to the company front desk. I asked Rose to collect the package for me. When I opened it, I found a letter inside. It was a very short letter. "These things belong to you, so I'm returning them. I'm sorry."I kept the photo albums and tossed the letter straight into the trash.Francis came by once after that.He didn't come inside. He just handed the security guard a paper bag. Inside were a few books I'd left behind during my college days.I accepted the books and asked the receptionist to tell him not to send me anything else. The receptionist asked if I wanted to return the paper bag. "There's no need."I took the books back to my office and waited until after work to open them.My name, which I'd written on the title page back in college, was still there, though the ink had faded a little.Flipping through, I found an old ticket stub slipped between the

The four waited outside my office building for three days. On the first day, I left through the underground parking lot, avoiding the main entrance altogether. On the second day, the receptionist told me they were still out there, so I stayed in the meeting room and finished revising the last report before clocking out.On the third afternoon, Rose came over to me. "Are you planning to avoid them forever?""They'll leave eventually.""But they've already been waiting for three days."I closed my laptop. "Then I'll just go see them."When I walked out of the building, the four of them were standing by the curb. The moment Julian saw me, he stepped forward. "Anna."I stopped in front of him. "What do you want from me?"Emily looked at me, exhaustion written all over her face. "I'm sorry."Her voice grew quieter after apologizing. "I was the one who deleted the files on your computer. At the time, all I could think about was my own presentation."I didn't know you needed them th

After joining Rose's company, I spent the first two days getting familiar with the project documents. The client had changed project leads twice, and the documents were scattered across several departments, with figures in the progress reports that wouldn’t reconcile.Rose handed me the files. "We originally planned to assign this project to someone else, but the client hasn't been happy with anyone so far. Take a look and see if you can handle it."I flipped through to the last page before asking, "Aren't we scheduled to give another presentation to them next week?""That's right.""Then we still have time."I reviewed the list of people in charge and their tasks, noting every missing piece of information along the way. That afternoon, I shared the new progress sheet in the project group chat. After looking it over, Katie Ruiz asked, "Anna, was this part something I missed earlier?""It's not that you missed it. The source data upstream simply changed. Get in touch with the su

Early the next morning, Julian went to my old company. The receptionist recognized him and politely said, "Ms. Harmon had already finished her exit paperwork yesterday.""Did she leave a forwarding address?""I'm afraid we can't share that.""Do you know which company she went to?"The receptionist shook her head again. "Ms. Harmon didn't say."Julian stood in the lobby, suddenly at a loss for what to ask next. The security guard recognized him. "Ms. Harmon came out holding quite a few things yesterday and had to wait for a while for a taxi. She seemed pretty calm when she left.""Did she get in touch with anyone?""I didn't notice."Francis tried HR, while Henry asked some of my former team members downstairs if they'd heard anything. They all got pretty much the same answers.I'd gone through the exit process, recovered the files on my laptop, and left without telling anyone where I was going.Back in the car, Julian opened his phone again. My profile picture was still the

Once the plane took off, I switched my phone to airplane mode. While I was still at the airport, I'd already blocked Julian, Emily, Francis, and Henry everywhere and left the group chat that had been part of my life for years. That left only four people in the group chat. They'd probably notice soon enough. But by then, I'd already be on my way to a new city.Rose was waiting for me at the arrivals exit. Seeing that all I had was one suitcase, she took my laptop bag from me. "Where's the rest of your stuff?""I'm leaving the rest behind for now."She gave me a look but didn't press me for an explanation. "The company's set you up with a short-term rental near the office. Once you get your bearings, you can take your time finding a place of your own."I gave a nod. Once the car got moving, I rested my forehead against the window. This city wasn't so different from the one I'd left behind. Cars were still backed up at the intersections, while the fading daylight gave way to dusk.
