Chapter 2 A Family of Their Own

Author: Iced Coconut
For the next two days, they didn't contact me even once.

I only found out how they were doing through a relative's social media post.

They were throwing a lavish housewarming party in that video. The three of them stood together in front of a huge cake, smiling as they cut into it and shouted in unison, "Together again in our new home!"

I liked the post.

My father called me less than 10 minutes later.

"What exactly are you trying to pull?" His voice was strained. It was clear he was barely holding back his anger. "You deliberately refuse to come with us, then you turn around and make sure our relatives notice you're gone.

"What, do you expect us to roll out the red carpet and beg you to come?"

I said nothing.

That only made him angrier. "We already paid back whatever we owed you with our lives in our last life. What more do you want?"

My mother snatched the phone from him, her voice breaking. "Do you have any idea how long your sister blamed herself because you didn't come? She finally started feeling better today, and you just had to ruin it!

"How did I end up with a daughter as petty as you? Tell me, was your sister's death in our last life your doing, too?"

I listened to one accusation after another before letting out a bitter laugh.

"You know what?" I said slowly. "Every word you just said is exactly why I didn't come."

I hung up before either of them could hurl another round of abuse my way.

My phone started vibrating again almost immediately. My parents' numbers took turns lighting up my screen.

I held down the power button, shut off my phone, and tossed it into a drawer. Then, I focused on my studies.

I stopped clinging to the idea that blood made us family. Once I made it to a foreign country, I would build a family of my own.

Two days later, I went to school as usual.

When I reached the classroom, my homeroom teacher looked at me in surprise. "Why are you still here? Your parents just dropped by to withdraw you from school."

My heart lurched. "I didn't ask to withdraw. They moved to a new city, but I didn't want to change schools. I was afraid it would affect my studies, so I stayed behind."

My teacher frowned, looking troubled. "But the paperwork for the withdrawal has already gone through. According to the system, you're no longer enrolled here."

My nails dug into my palms as I asked tremulously, "Then, what about my exchange-student application?"

She was silent for a few seconds before sighing. "You're no longer enrolled at this school, so your application was rejected as well."

A loud ringing filled my ears. "Can you give me some time, please? I'll get my enrollment restored. Studying abroad is my dream. I don't want to lose this opportunity."

When my teacher saw how I'd become all teary-eyed, she patted me on the shoulder. "Don't panic. We were all disappointed when we heard you were suddenly leaving. You've always been the top student in your grade. You're one of the best students at this school."

Her voice softened. "If you want to stay, I'll wait for you. I promise I'll resubmit your exchange-student application as soon as your enrollment here is restored."

I bowed deeply.

When I left the office, I wiped away my tears and immediately called my mother.

It took a long time for her to answer. Before she could even say anything, I demanded hotly, "Why did you withdraw me from school without asking me? As far as I remember, I never said I was going with you."

  • I Was Never Their Choice   Chapter 10 Letting Go

To my astonishment, they really did stay in Bayview. Not only that, they even rented a house nearby. They spent their days watching me.They saw Rosalind walk me to school in the mornings, slipping freshly baked cookies into my backpack. They saw Jack teach me to ride a bike on weekends. They saw how I wobbled along ahead of him while he huffed and puffed after me.They saw the three of us grilling some barbecue in the backyard, Rosalind wiping sauce from the corner of my mouth while I laughed so hard I nearly doubled over. They saw every one of those moments. One evening, I was walking home from the library when I ran into my parents outside the house. They stood beneath the streetlight, as if they had been waiting for me there for a long time. When my mother saw me, she parted her lips. However, her eyes reddened first before she finally blurted, "That woman… She's been good to you."I nodded. "Yeah."She clenched her hands and was silent for a long moment before finally sa

  • I Was Never Their Choice   Chapter 9 No Longer Family

That day, I had just gotten back from the library when I spotted Rosalind standing outside the house, waving at me from a distance. "Flora!"I jogged over. She cupped my face in her hands and kissed my forehead."Look at my little scholar," she said with a smile. "How did your studies go today?""It was a really productive day!" I chirped cheerfully, looping my arm through hers."Really?" Her eyes lit up. "Then, I guess we're making something special for dinner tonight!""Thanks, Mom!"Rosalind had suggested it just last week. She and Jack couldn't have children for certain reasons, but they had always wanted to know what it was like to raise one.So, they immediately volunteered when the community started looking for host families. They hadn't expected us to get along so well. Eventually, they asked if I would become their goddaughter.I liked them just as much, so I happily agreed. From the moment I said yes, I got myself a new mother and father. We were laughing and chat

I stayed silent for a long time before finally telling Rosalind everything. My voice was bland as I recounted my tale. Honestly, it sounded as if I were telling someone else's story. Well, I would've painted a convincing aloof picture if it weren't for my constant falling tears.By the end of it, I was choking back sobs."I don't know what I did wrong. Sure, I wasn't as good with words as Cecilia, and I didn't have her outgoing personality. Still, I really tried to be a good daughter to them."I tried to do everything as well as I could. I've always been first in my grade. I just don't know how to express myself… It's like how I'm genuinely grateful to you, but all I can ever say is 'thank you.' I really am grateful, but I don't know how to fully express it, you know?."So, I don't know what I did wrong." I raised a hand and wiped away my tears. "And I still don't think I did anything wrong."Rosalind never interrupted me.Only after I finished did she reach out and pull me into

  • I Was Never Their Choice   Chapter 7 A Place to Call Home

It was a clear July day in Loxley.I followed the address to my host family's home. As I stood at the front door, I took a deep breath to fortify myself before ringing the doorbell. The door swung open almost immediately. To my surprise, the woman who answered was from my home country. "You're Flora, right? Come on in. You must be exhausted from the trip."She ushered me inside.I was nervous, so much so that I didn't know what to say aside from choking out a stilted greeting. On the other hand, she had plenty to say. She introduced herself as Rosalind Croft and told me I could just call her Rosalind. Then, she started complaining about her husband. "Jack moved a bunch of his junk into your room just to get it ready for you. He insists they're antiques. As far as I'm concerned, they're just a pile of rusty old metal."A tall, solidly built man leaned out from the living room and protested, "They're not junk!"Rosalind winked at me. "You can decide for yourself whether it's jun

My father's expression changed immediately, concern filling his eyes. "What are you talking about? Your grandparents live out in the country. How could you possibly live there?"My mother pulled Cecilia into her arms and gently wiped away her tears. "Silly girl. Having you as our daughter is a blessing. How could we ever send you away?"She paused, a hint of irritation creeping into her voice. "Besides, what happened with Flora has nothing to do with you. She's always had an attitude problem. Once we find her, your father and I will make sure she learns her lesson."Cecilia rested her head against my mother's shoulder, her sobs gradually quieting. My father lit a cigarette and took a long drag, his expression shifting in the haze of smoke. "Come on. We're going to the police station."At the police station, the officer on duty listened to their account before asking seriously, "Who has your daughter been in contact with the most lately?""She's been going to school this whole tim

  • I Was Never Their Choice   Chapter 5 The Empty Number

The man's words left all three of them stunned. My mother stared at him as if she hadn't heard him correctly, her voice rising sharply. "What did you say? You rented this place?"The man frowned. "Yeah. Is there a problem?"My mother pointed inside, her voice rising in disbelief. "This is our house. How did you rent it out without our permission?"The man looked at her, confusion in his eyes."A high school student rented it to me. She said she was moving. Since the house would be sitting empty, she rented it out at her parents' request. We even saw the property deed when we signed the lease."Cecilia's face went pale as she spoke timidly. "That person… Could it have been Flora?"My father's face turned livid. "That ungrateful brat! How dare she rent out the house without our permission! She's getting more and more out of hand!"He immediately pulled out his phone and dialed my number.A recorded voice came through the receiver. "The number you have dialed is not in service."
