Chapter 4 A Promise Meant to Be Broken

Author: Iced Coconut
After the homeroom teacher resubmitted the application, my overseas spot was approved shortly afterward.

She called me into her office, her eyes full of approval. "You've always been an excellent student. I knew this spot would only be yours."

I took the letter from her. It was just a thin sheet of paper, yet it felt heavy enough to make my fingers tremble.

There was still more than a month before the final exams. So, I decided to leave the country once summer break started.

I went to class during the day, while I shut myself in my room and took online courses to prepare for studying abroad as night fell.

The account they'd given me access to also started seeing more transactions. $10,000 today. $20,000 two days later.

My parents received a text alert for every transaction I made, no matter how frequent or how pricey it was.

The first time I withdrew money, my mother called me within ten minutes. "Why did you spend $10,000 all at once?"

"I hired a private tutor. He's pretty expensive," I lied.

There was a brief silence on the other end before her tone returned to normal. "Okay. It's good that you're studying. Let me know if you need more money."

Then, she hung up.

Not once did she ask if I was scared living alone or how I was faring health-wise.

It was like I didn't even matter.

After that, I started withdrawing money more and more often, and the amounts kept getting larger.

I came up with excuse after excuse without hesitation, citing private tutoring, study materials, and competition expenses.

For parents as neglectful as them, it really figured that they wouldn't bother asking questions as soon as they heard that the money was for my studies.

A week before the final exams, I withdrew $100,000 all at once.

This time, my father called almost immediately, his voice edged with displeasure. "What kind of tutor did you hire that costs $100,000?"

I answered calmly, "It's not a private tutor. It's a summer program. Room and board are included, and the instructors all have PhDs, so it's expensive."

My father immediately objected. "No. You're coming back to Ashford this summer. Your sister hasn't been doing well on her exams lately, and she's been down all the time. I'm worried something might be wrong with her.

"Come back and help her with her studies. Spend some time with her. You two need to build a better relationship."

I gripped my phone until my knuckles turned white.

When Cecilia did poorly on her exams, they were afraid something might be wrong with her.

When I did poorly, all I got were cold looks and a swift barb of, "You didn't work hard enough. Who else can you blame?"

In Cecilia's world, the slightest disturbance was enough to send the whole family into a panic.

Meanwhile, they wouldn't even notice when my world fell apart.

"Okay. I'll come back for the summer." I pretended to agree over the phone.

However, I immediately booked a flight out of the country for the first day of the summer break the second I hung up on them.

This time, I followed their example and made a promise I had no intention of keeping.

The final exams ended at the end of June.

When I returned home, I began removing every trace of myself from the villa.

There were so few clothes in my walk-in closet that they fit neatly into a single suitcase with room to spare.

I also took the certificates and awards I had kept tucked away in the drawers. I would need them later when I applied to college.

Then, I contacted a real estate agent.

A tenant came along quickly enough. A young couple soon came to take a tour of the house and signed the lease that same day.

They paid a year in advance at $10,000 a month, immediately transferring the full $120,000 into my account.

Coupled with the money I had saved over the years from holiday gifts, scholarships, and the tutoring fees I had withdrawn from the card, I had $600,000 in total.

$600,000. That was enough to settle my relationship with my parents.

On the first day of summer break, I dragged my suitcase out through the villa's front door when the sun was barely peeking from the clouds.

By the time I arrived at the airport, there was one unread text waiting on my phone.

"We're driving out tomorrow. We should reach Belmont in about five days. Get your luggage ready and wait for us. We'll pick you up on the way back once we're done."

Another "on the way."

I didn't even have the energy to pretend anymore.

So, I deactivated WhatsApp, pulled out my SIM card, snapped it in half, and replaced it with a new one.

Then, I shouldered my bag, lifted my head, and walked toward the gate.

They said home was always the place we couldn't bear to leave. Alas, I'd learned the hard way that that kind of longing belonged to people who had somewhere to return to.

If I were lucky, mine would be waiting ahead.

…

Five days later, an SUV pulled up outside the villa.

Cecilia was the first to jump out, a carefully wrapped pink gift box in her arms.

She looked at my mother, her eyes bright. "Mom, do you think Flora will like this?"

My mother gently patted her head and smiled. "She will. You spent so long picking it out. Of course, she'll like it."

My father locked the car and walked over with a snort. "She'd better like it. It's the thought that counts, Cecilia."

The three of them chatted and laughed as they walked to the villa.

My father entered the passcode, but the lock kept flashing an error.

"What the hell?" His expression darkened as he muttered under his breath and knocked on the door.

The door opened. A sleepy-looking man stood on the other side.

My mother's eyes widened in shock. "Who are you? Why are you in our house?"

The man flinched at her sharp voice and frowned in annoyance. "I rent this place. You're not the landlord, are you?"

  • I Was Never Their Choice   Chapter 10 Letting Go

To my astonishment, they really did stay in Bayview. Not only that, they even rented a house nearby. They spent their days watching me.They saw Rosalind walk me to school in the mornings, slipping freshly baked cookies into my backpack. They saw Jack teach me to ride a bike on weekends. They saw how I wobbled along ahead of him while he huffed and puffed after me.They saw the three of us grilling some barbecue in the backyard, Rosalind wiping sauce from the corner of my mouth while I laughed so hard I nearly doubled over. They saw every one of those moments. One evening, I was walking home from the library when I ran into my parents outside the house. They stood beneath the streetlight, as if they had been waiting for me there for a long time. When my mother saw me, she parted her lips. However, her eyes reddened first before she finally blurted, "That woman… She's been good to you."I nodded. "Yeah."She clenched her hands and was silent for a long moment before finally sa

  • I Was Never Their Choice   Chapter 9 No Longer Family

That day, I had just gotten back from the library when I spotted Rosalind standing outside the house, waving at me from a distance. "Flora!"I jogged over. She cupped my face in her hands and kissed my forehead."Look at my little scholar," she said with a smile. "How did your studies go today?""It was a really productive day!" I chirped cheerfully, looping my arm through hers."Really?" Her eyes lit up. "Then, I guess we're making something special for dinner tonight!""Thanks, Mom!"Rosalind had suggested it just last week. She and Jack couldn't have children for certain reasons, but they had always wanted to know what it was like to raise one.So, they immediately volunteered when the community started looking for host families. They hadn't expected us to get along so well. Eventually, they asked if I would become their goddaughter.I liked them just as much, so I happily agreed. From the moment I said yes, I got myself a new mother and father. We were laughing and chat

  • I Was Never Their Choice   Chapter 8 Choosing Myself

I stayed silent for a long time before finally telling Rosalind everything. My voice was bland as I recounted my tale. Honestly, it sounded as if I were telling someone else's story. Well, I would've painted a convincing aloof picture if it weren't for my constant falling tears.By the end of it, I was choking back sobs."I don't know what I did wrong. Sure, I wasn't as good with words as Cecilia, and I didn't have her outgoing personality. Still, I really tried to be a good daughter to them."I tried to do everything as well as I could. I've always been first in my grade. I just don't know how to express myself… It's like how I'm genuinely grateful to you, but all I can ever say is 'thank you.' I really am grateful, but I don't know how to fully express it, you know?."So, I don't know what I did wrong." I raised a hand and wiped away my tears. "And I still don't think I did anything wrong."Rosalind never interrupted me.Only after I finished did she reach out and pull me into

  • I Was Never Their Choice   Chapter 7 A Place to Call Home

It was a clear July day in Loxley.I followed the address to my host family's home. As I stood at the front door, I took a deep breath to fortify myself before ringing the doorbell. The door swung open almost immediately. To my surprise, the woman who answered was from my home country. "You're Flora, right? Come on in. You must be exhausted from the trip."She ushered me inside.I was nervous, so much so that I didn't know what to say aside from choking out a stilted greeting. On the other hand, she had plenty to say. She introduced herself as Rosalind Croft and told me I could just call her Rosalind. Then, she started complaining about her husband. "Jack moved a bunch of his junk into your room just to get it ready for you. He insists they're antiques. As far as I'm concerned, they're just a pile of rusty old metal."A tall, solidly built man leaned out from the living room and protested, "They're not junk!"Rosalind winked at me. "You can decide for yourself whether it's jun

My father's expression changed immediately, concern filling his eyes. "What are you talking about? Your grandparents live out in the country. How could you possibly live there?"My mother pulled Cecilia into her arms and gently wiped away her tears. "Silly girl. Having you as our daughter is a blessing. How could we ever send you away?"She paused, a hint of irritation creeping into her voice. "Besides, what happened with Flora has nothing to do with you. She's always had an attitude problem. Once we find her, your father and I will make sure she learns her lesson."Cecilia rested her head against my mother's shoulder, her sobs gradually quieting. My father lit a cigarette and took a long drag, his expression shifting in the haze of smoke. "Come on. We're going to the police station."At the police station, the officer on duty listened to their account before asking seriously, "Who has your daughter been in contact with the most lately?""She's been going to school this whole tim

  • I Was Never Their Choice   Chapter 5 The Empty Number

The man's words left all three of them stunned. My mother stared at him as if she hadn't heard him correctly, her voice rising sharply. "What did you say? You rented this place?"The man frowned. "Yeah. Is there a problem?"My mother pointed inside, her voice rising in disbelief. "This is our house. How did you rent it out without our permission?"The man looked at her, confusion in his eyes."A high school student rented it to me. She said she was moving. Since the house would be sitting empty, she rented it out at her parents' request. We even saw the property deed when we signed the lease."Cecilia's face went pale as she spoke timidly. "That person… Could it have been Flora?"My father's face turned livid. "That ungrateful brat! How dare she rent out the house without our permission! She's getting more and more out of hand!"He immediately pulled out his phone and dialed my number.A recorded voice came through the receiver. "The number you have dialed is not in service."
