Chapter 2

Author: Shallow Teal
I studied ballet for 12 years.

I started when I was seven, and I often trained until my toes bled.

At 19, I won gold at the national competition. My teacher said I had real talent and urged me to train abroad.

But then Isaac told me, "Linda, a Luna doesn't need to be a ballet dancer. I need you to learn HR and finance so you can help me run the pack's businesses."

For the first time, one thing felt completely clear: Isaac needed me.

I put my ballet shoes at the bottom of the closet and threw myself into the hollow role of Luna.

And just like that, four years went by.

On Thursday evening, Isaac picked me up so we could approve the venue decorations.

When I came downstairs, Chloe was sitting on the couch with a velvet box in her lap.

My mother was helping her with the clasp of a necklace.

"Linda." Chloe looked up and smiled at me. "Isn't this necklace pretty? Isaac wants me to wear it to the party."

I looked at the wolf's-head pendant around her neck. It was the same necklace she'd chosen two days earlier, when Isaac let her pick first.

Isaac was standing in the doorway to the living room with his car keys in his hand.

He looked at me and opened his mouth, ready to explain.

I said it for him. "I don't have a wolf. I'm not strong enough. That necklace is perfect for Chloe."

He frowned. "Linda—"

"Let's go," I said, cutting him off as I opened the car door. "We have a tasting today too."

In the car, everything was the same as always.

Chloe's shawl was on the passenger seat, and the seatback was tilted to the angle she liked.

I opened the back door and got in. Isaac looked at me in the rearview mirror.

I used to love sitting up front next to him.

"She really loves that necklace," he said. "But I'm having your gift remade. I mean it."

"Okay."

"Trust me."

"Mm-hm."

"Linda." At a red light, Isaac turned and reached back for my hand.

He rubbed his thumb over the back of my hand, the way he always did when he wanted to calm me down.

When I didn't answer, he lowered his voice. "Don't be like this. I'm not used to you being like this."

I still didn't say anything.

The light turned green, and the car behind us honked.

Isaac turned back to the road. "Chloe has the strongest wolf in your family. Part of the reason I let her have her way is for your sake. Staying on her good side makes things easier for you at home. Do you understand?"

Then he added, "You always make such a big deal out of little things—"

I met his eyes in the rearview mirror. "They're not small to me."

He stopped talking.

I kept looking out the window. The plane trees along the road were bare.

Everything out there looked dead.

I didn't want to speak to him. When we got home, I slammed the car door and went straight inside.

He followed me in.

My mother saw us and stopped me. "Linda, what are you doing?"

"Nothing." I kept walking.

Her voice rose. "Linda Allen, stop right there! Do you have any idea how this makes you look?"

I stopped and turned around to face her.

"Your bonding ceremony is next Saturday. What is the rest of the pack going to think?" my mother shouted. "You're a grown woman, and you still don't know how to behave. You're nothing like Chloe!"

That struck a nerve, and my eyes burned.

"Mrs. Allen, Linda's just nervous before the ceremony," Isaac said.

My mother gave him an approving look. "Alpha Kane, I'm so sorry. We've spoiled her."

Then she turned on me again. "If you don't give her a proper apology, get out of my house!"

Everything went quiet for a second.

I kept my chin up and stared at them.

Everyone in that room looked like a stranger.

Isaac came over and patted my shoulder.

"Go to your room for now, Linda. Don't make your parents angry."

He followed me all the way to my bedroom. When I still said nothing, he sat beside me and tried to put an arm around my shoulders.

"Linda, don't take what she said to heart."

I turned away from him.

His hand stopped where it was.

A knock sounded at the door, followed by Chloe's voice. "Isaac, can I go over the show details with you one more time?"

I looked at Isaac.

He hesitated. Then he kissed the top of my head, got up, and went to the door anyway.

"Get some sleep. Tomorrow, we'll pick up the custom diamond ring I ordered for you."

The door closed.

Their footsteps faded down the hall.

I scoffed and bent down to pull my dusty ballet shoes from the bottom of the closet.

I texted Jess again.

"Any news from the company?"

My screen lit up almost immediately with a reply from Jess.

"You're in! Swan Lake, next Sunday. I just emailed you the details."

I didn't want to stay in this place for one more minute.

Isaac returned to his apartment and slid down to the floor just inside the door. The room was so quiet he could hear his own heartbeat. He reached for the mind-link in his chest. It flickered like a flame about to go out.He used to feel everything Linda felt through the mind-link: her anger, her hurt, her sadness. He'd always known. And every time, he'd tried to make it up to her. He'd believed that once he made it up to her, the pain disappeared. He had never imagined the link between them could become so fragile. The Elder called. "Alpha, we're still dealing with the fallout from the interrupted ceremony. The pack can't be without its Alpha. You have to come back and do your duty.""I need time." His voice was raw."You don't have time. The pack's image has taken a hit, and outside forces are watching. As Alpha, your duty comes before your feelings." The Elder took a breath and tried again. "Once the rejection ceremony is over, you can choose another Luna."The call ended.Isaac sat

Lately, Seth had been showing up outside my apartment building all the time.He always said he was in the area and offered me a ride, but somehow, he'd have my favorite coffee and a little cake waiting for me in the car.Amy sat in the back. As soon as I climbed into the front seat, she said, "Linda, today's cake is raspberry. My brother said you seem to like things a little tart."I paused, then took the little cake and bit into it.Just the right amount of sweet and tart. And it was exactly the flavor I liked."Thank you. It's delicious," I said."He guessed right!" Amy said.Seth smiled. He started the car, keeping his eyes on the road. "I didn't guess. I observed, then I deduced."I laughed. With the two of them around, life felt a lot lighter. What surprised me was that Isaac didn't hurry back to London. He rented an apartment in Berlin and waited outside the company entrance for me every day.He filled my dressing room with gifts: custom pointe shoes, an antique necklace from an

Seth saw my expression and asked quietly, "Need a hand?"I shook my head.I knew Isaac would find me sooner or later. And I'd been waiting for him to."All right." Seth patted Amy's shoulder. "We'll head out, then. Call me if you need anything."I watched them leave, then turned back. Isaac stared at me without blinking."Who is he?" His voice was hoarse."That's none of your business," I said flatly, even as my chest tightened.I couldn't tell whether the pain in my chest was mine or his."Linda—" Isaac stepped toward me and reached for my hand.I stepped back, out of reach."Isaac, you came all this way, but my answer hasn't changed." I took a breath and kept my voice calm. "When I told you we were over, I wasn't joking."I looked away and continued, "I'm tired of always coming second to Chloe. I'm tired of you putting her first, then trying to make it up to me.""No! It's not like that!" Isaac cut in desperately. "Linda, I know I was wrong. I swear, from now on—""There is no from n

Turn. At six on the morning of the bonding ceremony, Isaac woke up.Out of habit, he rolled over and reached for Linda's side of the bed, only to find cold sheets.Isaac lay still as sleep drained from him. Then he remembered that Linda had been staying at her own house for the past few days.He tried to reach her through the mind-link.Nothing came back.He tried again. It was as if the link had been swallowed whole. All that remained was a hollow echo. Before, even when Linda was angry with him, he could still feel her there.Every breath she took was like a thread tugging at him, telling him she'd always be beside him.Now that thread felt ready to snap.Isaac sat up as a panic he couldn't explain swept through him.He called Linda. No answer. Then he called Chloe, who sounded relaxed. "Linda's probably just nervous."Isaac gripped the phone, frozen. He told himself Linda was only angry. Once the ceremony was over, he would make up for everything that had happened over the past few days.

The day after the mix-up, Isaac had every announcement with the wrong name taken down. The head of PR was replaced too.He came to see me himself and set the corrected statement on the table. "Linda, I promise nothing like this will ever happen again."I didn't look up. I kept stretching at the barre. He stood there for a while, then said, "The rite is Thursday night. The Elders will all be there.""Okay," I said.Traditionally, a rite honoring the Moon Goddess had to be performed before the bonding ceremony.Isaac and I would stand side by side inside the circle, hold hands, and summon the moon's resonance. If the resonance was strong enough, all 12 stones around the circle would light up at once, proving that the Moon Goddess blessed the match.Everyone knew it was just a formality. After all, the Moon Goddess had already chosen me as Isaac's fated mate. But no one expected what happened at our rite.On the open grounds in front of the Kane estate, Isaac held out his hand to me.His
